We developed the Interdisciplinary Social Accountability Conference in Healthcare to address educational gaps and empower learners to advocate for healthcare needs. This conference aimed to strengthen social accountability competencies in students through three areas: (1) a learner-led planning model that promotes initiative-taking and leadership, (2) interactive sessions on locally relevant topics, and (3) a student research showcase to foster interdisciplinary dialogue. Survey findings demonstrated high engagement and positive experiences with cross-disciplinary networking. We encourage inst

BACKGROUND: The activation patterns and functional network characteristics between stroke survivors and healthy individuals based on resting-or task-state neuroimaging and neurophysiological techniques have been extensively explored. However, the discrepancy between stroke patients at different recovery stages remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in brain connectivity and network topology between subacute and chronic patients, and hope to provide a basis for rehabilitation strategies at different stages after stroke.
METHODS: Fifteen stroke survivors were assigned to the su

OBJECTIVE: Rolandic epilepsy (RE) is characterized by typical interictal-electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns mainly localized in centrotemporal and parietooccipital areas. An aberrant intrinsic organization of the default mode network (DMN) due to repeated disturbances from spike-generating areas may be able to account for specific cognitive deficits and behavioral problems in RE. The aim of the present study was to investigate cognitive development (CD) and socioemotional development (SED) in patients with RE during active disease in relation to DMN connectivity and network topology.

Purpose To develop a highly generalizable weakly supervised model to automatically detect and localize image-level intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) by using study-level labels. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, the proposed model was pretrained on the image-level Radiological Society of North America dataset and fine-tuned on a local dataset by using attention-based bidirectional long short-term memory networks. This local training dataset included 10 699 noncontrast head CT scans in 7469 patients, with ICH study-level labels extracted from radiology reports. Model performance wa

Seven patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsies were investigated using MEG and EEG. Spike-wave series were seen in all patients, single spikes in six. For both, source analysis showed most often involvement of frontal, perinsular and subcortical/thalamic areas. In all patients, a unilateral frontal accentuation of activity could be observed. Patients with juvenile myoclonic and myoclonic absence epilepsy presented with localizations mainly in the central and premotor regions versus prefrontal accentuation in the other absence patients. MEG/EEG source localization provides important info

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is characterized by episodic binge eating and purging behaviors. Disrupted neural processes of self-regulation, taste-rewarding, and body image has been associated with the pathogenesis of BN. However, the structural basis for these behavioral and functional deficits remains largely unknown. We employed diffusion tensor imaging and graph theory approaches (including the nodal properties and network-based statistics (NBS)) to characterize the whole-brain structural network of 48 BN and 44 healthy women. For nodal measures of strength, local efficiency, and betweenness centr

The exact mechanism underlying fibromyalgia is unknown, but increased facilitatory modulation and/or dysfunctional descending inhibitory pathway activity are posited as possible mechanisms contributing to sensitization of the central nervous system. The primary goal of this study is to identify a fibromyalgia neural circuit that can account for these abnormalities in central pain. The second goal is to gain a better understanding of the functional connectivity between the default and the executive attention network (salience network plus dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex) in fibromyalgia. We ex

Superficial collecting lymphatics of the limbs are present in much greater number than deep collecting vessels. There is practically no connexion between both networks. Although lymphatics are abundant distally, they tend to fuse toward the root of the limb. At certain "critical" points along their course, local aggression of the vessels may cause lymphedema. In the lower extremity, at the knee and thigh levels, the "critical" area takes the form of a narrow strip of adipose tissue along the path of the great saphenous vein. In the groin, danger is localized at the inferior superficial inguina

Despite decades of cognitive, neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies, it is unclear if letters are identified before word-form encoding during reading, or if letters and their combinations are encoded simultaneously and interactively. Here using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we show that a 'letter-form' area (responding more to consonant strings than false fonts) can be distinguished from an immediately anterior 'visual word-form area' in ventral occipito-temporal cortex (responding more to words than consonant strings). Letter-selective magnetoencephalographic responses begin in

Human vision relies on correct information processing from the eye to various visual areas. Disturbances in the visual perception of simple features are believed to come from low-level network (e.g., V1) disruptions. In the present study, we modelled monocular losses in spatial vision through plausible multiple network modifications in early visual coding. We investigated perceptual deficits in anisometropic amblyopia and used the monocular tilt illusion as a probe of primary visual cortex orientation coding and inhibitory interactions. The psychophysical results showed that orientation misper

BACKGROUND: Several imaging studies have identified localized anatomical and functional brain changes in medication-overuse headache (MOH).
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to evaluate whole-brain functional connectivity at rest together with voxel-based morphometry in MOH patients, in comparison with episodic migraine (EM) patients and healthy controls (HCs).
METHODS: Anatomical MRI and resting-state functional MRI scans were obtained in MOH patients (n = 17 and 9, respectively), EM patients (n = 18 and 15, respectively) and HCs (n = 17 and 17). SPM8 was used to analyze voxel-bas

Weight changes are insufficiently understood adverse events of deep brain stimulation. In this context, exploring neural networks of weight control may inform novel treatment strategies for weight-related disorders. In this study, we investigated weight changes after deep brain stimulation of the ventral striatum/ventral capsule and to what extent changes are associated with connectivity to feeding-related networks. We retrospectively analyzed 25 patients undergoing deep brain stimulation for obsessive-compulsive disorder or substance dependency. Weight changes were assessed preoperatively and

Curvature evolution on a deforming surface is governed by the full change in the surface metric, but on biological surfaces captured by serial three-dimensional imaging, only the local area change is observable. The loss of the shear component leaves prediction of curvature evolution underdetermined from imaging alone. On the thoracic aorta, where curvature change marks disease progression, we derive a closed-form equation that predicts the change in integrated Gaussian curvature from the area dilation and initial geometry. The equation combines a conformal term in the area dilation with a lea

We propose a mesh-based technique to aid in the classification of Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) using mesh representations of the cortex and subcortical structures. Deep learning methods for classification tasks that utilize structural neuroimaging often require extensive learning parameters to optimize. Frequently, these approaches for automated medical diagnosis also lack visual interpretability for areas in the brain involved in making a diagnosis. This work: (a) analyzes brain shape using surface information of the cortex and subcortical structures, (b) proposes a residual learning fr

In medical imaging diagnosis, accurate segmentation of the knee joint can help doctors better observe and diagnose lesions, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment effectiveness. Vision Mamba mainly relies on the State Space Model (SSM) for feature modeling, which excels at capturing global contextual information but cannot capture local texture features. Moreover, features of different scales are not effectively integrated, resulting in the model's weak segmentation ability on small-scale tissues (such as cartilage areas). To this end, this study proposed a novel multi-scale Visio

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder with progressive impairment of memory and cognitive functions. Structural magnetic resonance images (MRI) play important role to evaluate the brain anatomical changes for AD Diagnosis. Machine learning technologies have been widely studied on MRI computation and analysis for quantitative evaluation and computer-aided-diagnosis of AD. Most existing methods extract the hand-craft features after image processing such as registration and segmentation, and then train a classifier to distinguish AD subjects from other groups. Mot

Early screening of skin cancer is crucial to the survival rate of patients. Although deep learning has made significant progress in dermoscopic image analysis, the blurred edge of the lesion, the vulnerability to noise interference, and the limited computing resources at the time of model deployment are still the main bottlenecks. To this end, this paper proposes a frequency-space collaborative enhancement network (FSC-Net) based on lightweight classification. Aiming at the problem of blurred lesion edge and noise interference, the network first constructs a learning frequency enhancement modu

The experience of pain involves the activation of multiple brain areas. Pain-specific activity patterns within and between these local networks remain, however, largely unknown. We measured neuronal network oscillations in different relevant regions of the mouse brain during acute pain, induced by subcutaneous injection of capsaicin into the left hind paw. Field potentials were recorded from primary somatosensory cortex, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), posterior insula, ventral posterolateral thalamic nucleus, parietal cortex, central nucleus of the amygdala and olfactory bulb. Analysis inclu

OBJECTIVE: In oncologic surgery, secondary lymphedema of male external genital organs and upper or lower limbs frequently develops as a result of excision or mechanical obstruction of collecting lymphatic trunks. We evaluated whether the short-term and long-term outcomes of microsurgical treatment of limb and genital organs improves tissue drainage in patients with secondary lymphedema by restoring the pre-existing lymphatic networks or through new lymphangiogenesis.
METHODS: Of 110 secondary lymphedema patients, microsurgery was performed in 45 hospitalized patients. Patients were aged 25 to

Somatosensory inputs are critical to motor control. Animal studies have shown that primary somatosensory lesions cause sensorimotor deficits along with disrupted organization in primary motor cortex (M1). How does damage in primary somatosensory cortex (S1) influence motor networks in humans? Using fMRI, we examined two individuals, LS and RF, who had extensive damage to left somatosensory cortex, but primarily intact motor cortex and preserved motor abilities. Given left S1 damage, tactile detection and localization were impaired for the contralesional hand in both individuals. When moving th
