Ameloblastoma is a slow-growing, persistent and locally aggressive neoplasm of epithelial origin accounting for 10% out of 30% of all odontogenic tumors. According to the World Health Organization, ameloblastomas are classified into the following types: conventional, unicystic, and peripheral. Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) refers to those cystic lesions that show clinical, radiographic, or gross features of a mandibular cyst, but on histologic examination show a typical ameloblastomatous epithelium lining part of the cyst cavity, with or without luminal and/or mural tumor growth. We report a ca

Radical treatment of ameloblastoma and other benign locally invasive odontogenic tumors frequently requires mandibular segmentectomy followed by functional reconstruction. Conventional reconstruction is typically performed through an extraoral approach to obtain sufficient exposure; however, this technique often results in visible facial scarring, extensive soft-tissue dissection, and potential injury to the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. This protocol describes a reproducible digitally guided workflow for mandibular segmental resection and reconstruction using a free vascular

The clinical imaging typically presents as a multicystic lesion in the jawbone, which is mostly diagnosed as ameloblastoma, myxoma, or odontogenic keratocyst. Preoperative biopsy is often challenging due to the intraosseous location of these lesions. Consequently, clinicians frequently rely on these characteristic multicystic imaging features to diagnose either ameloblastoma or odontogenic keratocyst, subsequently planning treatments ranging from marginal resection to mandibular segmental osteotomies with concurrent autogenous bone grafting. However, we encountered two cases of multicystic les

The vascularized iliac crest flap has garnered widespread acclaim within the field of mandibular reconstruction attributable to its sufficient bone mass and congruent curved morphology. However, when the precise orientation of the iliac crest is imperative during mandibular reconstruction and there exists an accompanying defect within the oral soft tissue, the indispensability of an additional flap to facilitate concurrent defect repair becomes evident. In such instances, the submental island flap emerges as an exemplary candidate.

Osteochondroma of the condyle is a rare, slow-growing, benign tumour of the temporomandibular joint that can result in facial asymmetry, limited mouth opening, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and malocclusion. The large majority of osteochondromas occur at the distal metaphysis of the femur and the proximal metaphysis of the tibia, whereas only 0.6% of osteochondromas have been reported as occurring in the craniofacial region. We discuss the diagnosis and treatment of a 56-year-old fit and well male patient who presented to the Orthodontic Department at Wexham Park Hospital with a four-yea

A 55-year-old female patient reported with an intraoral well-localised asymptomatic swelling on the right side of the mandible in relation to the right mandibular first molar along with a history of trauma 6 months back. Panoramic radiograph revealed normal trabecular bone pattern in relation to the lesion. The lesion was excised along with the associated buccal cortical plate and tooth. The microscopic examination revealed a well-circumscribed lesion consisting of spindle cells arranged in storiform pattern associated with the buccal cortical plate. The key feature to note was presence of rea

BACKGROUND: Mandibular chronic osteomyelitis is a complicated therapeutical problem in the oral and maxillofacial surgery. While the principles of conservative and radical treatments are generally widely accepted by all authors, the repair of the defects by plastic surgery is inadequately developed.
METHOD: Eleven patients with chronic osteomyelitis, odontogenic cysts and benign tumors of the mandible were treated by filling the osseous defect with a muscle flap from the adjacent m. masseter, m. buccinatorius and m. platysma.
RESULTS: The clinical and X-ray examinations showed that a success

Many lesions that occur in the mandible have a cystlike radiographic appearance. These lesions are often difficult to differentiate on the basis of their radiographic features alone. Mandibular lesions may be odontogenic or nonodontogenic. Among odontogenic lesions without mineralization, ameloblastomas, odontogenic keratocysts, and dentigerous cysts can all appear as well-defined, unilocular, well-corticated, lucent lesions that are often associated with the crowns of impacted or unerupted teeth. Most radicular cysts appear as round or pear-shaped, unilocular, lucent lesions in the periapical

A case is reported of unilateral process enlargement in a 22-year-old man causing limitation of mandibular movements. The radiographic features suggested an osteochondroma. Following coronoidectomy, a definitive diagnosis of coronoid hyperplasia was made.

Neuropathy of the inferior alveolar nerve is common in dental practice. Its cause, when not a result of local anesthetic, is normally from dental disease or trauma. Isolated mental neuropathy (numb chin syndrome) is extremely uncommon, and its most common cause also is dental. The next most common cause is from an underlying neoplasm, and some cases have resulted from systemic disease (eg, multiple sclerosis). Some patients show no evidence of additional disease and experience spontaneous remission of the symptom. Numb chin syndrome cases require coordination of treatment between dentists and

A cyst attached to the apex of a mandibular canine was partly lined with respiratory epithelium. This is an interesting observation for two reasons: (1) The few well-documented instances of this type of epithelium in apical periodontal cysts have been in the maxilla, where a plausible source for the respiratory epithelium for most of them was a breach in the floor of the maxillary sinus. (2) The mandibular location of the cyst reported here indicates that the respiratory epithelium within it was derived through proliferation and metaplasia of the rests of Malassez.

The clinical presentation of ameloblastoma is illustrated by two contrasting cases; in one case the tumour was identified preoperatively while in the other it masqueraded as a dentigerous cyst. The authors stress the importance of making a positive diagnosis and the need for a thorough histologic examination of excised tissue because this tumour is potentially disfiguring and sometimes lethal if it is not adequately excised.

Reviews of the literature show that simple bone cysts of the jaws no longer can be considered rare. The clinical and radiographic appearances are mostly rather typical, but in some cases there are great variations. In this article an unusual case with both facial asymmetry and bilateral occurrence is described. The differential diagnosis between simple bone cysts, tumors, odontogenic cysts and vascular abnormalities is sometimes hard to establish. In those cases aspiration biopsy can be of great help.

This novel hybrid single-double-single barrel (1-2-1) design for fibula free flap reconstruction addresses the unique challenges presented by Brown class III mandibular defects, which involve long-span defects at both bodies of the mandible and the chin. The importance of this design lies in its ability to overcome the limitations of traditional approaches in terms of mandible height and pedicle length, while optimizing both functional and aesthetic outcomes. The technique uses a combination of single-double-single barrel fibula segments to achieve ideal aesthetics and support for dental prosth

This study introduces a novel surgical technique that leverages digital design for the precise repair of mandibular defects resulting from benign jaw tumors. The restoration of the mandibular defect is accomplished through autologous bone grafting from the mandible itself. This method significantly diminishes surgical complexity and risk, meeting the patient's preference to avoid additional surgical sites. Notably, 15 months postsurgery, the patient's mandible dimensions were suitable for dental implantation. Therefore, this technique has proven effective in repairing mandibular defects caused
