Practical periodontics and aesthetic dentistry : PPAD1997eng
Various disorders related to the masticatory muscles or to the temporomandibular joints may be encountered in a restorative dental practice. Most of them can be managed by the restorative dentist whose primary interest may not lie in the area of temporomandibular disorders. The term temporomandibular disorders is used in this discussion to denote the group of diseases of the masticatory system that involves primarily the temporomandibular joints, the masticatory muscles, and the occlusion of the teeth. The learning objective of this article is to describe temporomandibular disorders encountere

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a reactive, localized, benign lesion that typically affects the extremities in younger people. It is a unique and uncommon condition that has been difficult to fully understand regarding its causes, development, and effective treatment. Commonly seen in muscles of arms, and thighs, it seldom includes the masticatory muscles. Severe trismus results if it affects the masticatory muscles. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans are useful methods for identifying the calcified mass. Histopathology is essential for achieving an accurate diagnosis and pla

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Pathological abrasion of hard dental tissues is accompanied by both morphological and functional disorders of the dentofacial system. Among the functional changes, changes in the bioelectrical activity of the masticatory muscles are primarily considered. The aim was to study the functional state of the masticatory muscles in patients with pathological abrasion of hard dental tissues of varying degrees of severity compared with the norm.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: Electromyographic studies were conducted in 89 patients aged 18 to 59. 70 patients had p

Recent functional animal studies have reported that the motor control of masticatory muscle function is bilaterally guided by both hemispheres, which may fundamentally differ from the cortical control of limb muscle function. In this study, we investigated whether unilateral cortical brain infarction induces different impairments in masticatory and upper limb motor performance. Evidence of the importance of both hemispheres in controlling masticatory movements would be greater if the masticatory function were shown to be unimpaired in patients with severe hemiplegia. The masticatory function o

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common. Usual symptoms are joint noises and pain, pain in masticatory muscles, difficulties in jaw movements and headache. Treatment of TMD includes information on the background and good response to treatment of these disorders. The patient is advised on self-care routines, including relaxing the lower jaw, massaging the masticatory muscles and hot or cold packs on painful sites. Pharmacotherapy consists of paracetamol or anti-inflammatory analgesics. Occlusal appliances, physiotherapy, cognitive therapies and acupuncture are recommended. Complicated case

Ninety-one new patients with myofascial pain-dysfunction (MPD) syndrome were studied prospectively. The patients experienced aural fullness, tinnitus, vertigo, odynophagia, and headache in addition to the cardinal symptoms of otalgia, muscle tenderness, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) click, and trismus. Some nonmasticatory muscles were found to be tender as frequently as the masticatory muscles. It is proposed that MPD syndrome as seen clinically involves more than just the masticatory musculature and is a composite of several head and neck myofascial pain syndromes including tensor tympani syn

AIM: To present an occlusal splint effective for alleviating masticatory disturbance in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).
CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old male DMD patient with masticatory disturbance presented with an open bite, with occlusal contact only between the first and second molars bilaterally and reduced masticatory performance. We applied an occlusal splint that achieved occlusal contact for all teeth and monitored its effects on masticatory function over 6 years. The occlusal splint increased occlusal contact points from 11 to 60. Although occlusal force remained at 13.9-16 kg, mastic

We describe a 33-year-old man who presented with lip and tongue nibbling and bleeding during sleep. Videopolysomnography revealed myoclonic jerks involving the masticatory and facial muscles recurring mainly during NREM sleep. There was no tonic EMG masticatory activity typical of bruxism. EMG analysis demonstrated the recruitment of V- to VII innervated muscles and, in half of the episodes, also the sternocleidomastoideus. Our patient had sleep-related faciomandibular myoclonus (SFMM) with spontaneous jerks of oromasticatory and cervical muscles, occurring only during sleep. Tooth grinding, t

Introduction: The paper presents the results concerning the energy (work) and peak power generated by the elevator muscles of the mandible (the masseter, medial pterygoid, and temporalis muscles) during unilateral chewing of selected food products in vitro. Since the act of chewing is a very complex issue in the biomechanics of the masticatory system, the research and analysis of the obtained results were therefore limited to the first cycle. Methods: Determination of the peak energy and power of the muscles required: (1) preparation of food patterns, in the form of the function F = f(Δh) (for

PURPOSE: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of mandibular advancement device (MAD) therapy on temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
STUDY SELECTION: We included 14 clinical studies assessing the signs and symptoms of TMDs in patients with OSA treated with MAD therapy. The analysis was divided into short-term (<6 months) and long-term (≥1 year) follow-up phases. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for each study during follow-up. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Gradin

High-field MR imaging was used to study structural and physiologic alterations involving the muscles of mastication in 46 patients. Muscular abnormalities were often detected incidentally in conjunction with lesions of the CNS, cranial nerves, facial bones, and/or temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Specific pathologic alterations observed included anomalies of musculoskeletal development, muscle hypertrophy, atrophy (disuse and denervation), inflammatory disorders, injuries (including contusions, tears, and muscle rupture), posttraumatic musculoskeletal deformities, and reflex sympathetic dystroph

Induced oral respiration in eight growing monkeys led to a lowering of the chin, a steeper mandibular plane angle, and an increase in the gonial angle as compared with eight control animals. The posterior border of the mandible maintained its normal inclination relative to the skull. The mandible underwent a posterior rotation in the experimental animals and an anterior rotation in the controls. The findings suggest that the position of the chin and the inclination of the mandibular plane are controlled by the balance between the suprahyoid and the orofacial muscles. Since the posterior border

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Objective tinnitus is a symptom often observed in patients with chronic hyperactivity of masticatory muscles.
METHODS: We report here the unusual case of a 63-year-old woman who developed a distressing tinnitus related to contractions of reinnervated masticatory muscles. This reinnervation process was caused by a postpolio syndrome that gave rise to an acoustic resonance phenomenon transmitted to the middle ear as an audible sound.
RESULTS: The tinnitus was successfully treated with electromyography-guided intramuscular injections of type A botulinum toxin.

The impact of artificial selection on the masticatory apparatus of dogs has been poorly studied, and comparative data with dogs subjected to more natural constraints are lacking. This study explores the jaw musculature of Tunisian street dogs, which are largely free from the influence of breed-specific selection. The masticatory muscles (digastric, masseter, temporalis, and pterygoid) of 27 adult dogs were dissected and muscle mass and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) were quantified, providing a baseline for comparisons between dogs from more natural versus more controlled environmen

The purpose of this experiment was to look for signals of muscle fatigue in volunteers with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) during short period of mastication. Twenty female volunteers selected by Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) participated, 10 with myogenic TMD (experimental) and 10 clinically normal (control). The Masseter and Temporalis muscles were evaluated electromyographically with active differential surface electrodes. The masticatory activity was recorded for 15 seconds and the signals were normalized by 4 seconds of teeth clenching. Three co

The skeletal muscle tissue of the lip, tongue, soft palate and masticatory muscles have been morphometrically studied in 70 human fetuses (4-10-month-old). In the muscles mentioned decrease in the nuclear volume and in the nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio is observed. Increase of the muscle fibres in the area of transversal sections is especially intensive during last three months. The labial and glossal fibres reach the greatest thickness. On the 6th month and further, there is an essential difference in number of myons with nuclei in the transversal section of the tongue and lips, as compared with
