[Microbiota of the ocular surface in children with myopia].

UNLABELLED: A healthy ocular surface is characterized by relatively stable and comparatively low microbial diversity. However, pathological conditions can provoke shifts in the composition of bacterial taxa, which may be associated, among other factors, with the progression of myopia. PURPOSE: This study compared the taxonomic diversity of the conjunctival microbiota in children with varying degrees of myopia and those without clinically confirmed myopia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ocular surface samples were obtained from 29 children aged 6-17 years with myopia (58 eyes) and from 12 children of

Microbiota and kidney disease: the road ahead.

More than 850 million individuals worldwide, accounting for 10-15% of the adult population, are estimated to have chronic kidney disease. Each of these individuals is host to tens of trillions of microorganisms that are collectively referred to as microbiota - a dynamic ecosystem that both influences host health and is itself influenced by changes in the host. Available evidence supports the existence of functional connections between resident microorganisms and kidney health that are altered in the context of specific kidney diseases, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease and

An altered uterine microbiota with endometrial hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial hyperplasia (EH) is a precursor to endometrial cancer, and the role of the microbiome in its development is unclear. RESULTS: The present study investigated the uterine microbiome in patients with benign uterine conditions and endometrial hyperplasia. A significant structural shift in the uterine microbiome of patients with endometrial hyperplasia compared to those with benign conditions was found. Delftia, Serratia and Stenotrophomonas were significantly enriched in endometrial hyperplasia samples and associated with the presence of endometrial hyperplasia. CONCLUSIO

The vaginal microbiota of healthy female cats.

The vaginal microbiota of the queen (i.e., female cat) has never been described using culture independent methods. The objectives of the present research were to describe the vaginal microbiota of healthy domestic shorthair queens using both 16S rRNA sequencing and culture, and to assess the effects of age, living environment, and reproductive season on its composition. Thirty queens undergoing elective ovariectomy were included in the study. The vaginal samples were collected just before surgery, from animals under general anaesthesia. Two consecutive mini-swabs were introduced in the queens'

The utility of microbiome (microbiota) and exosomes in dentistry.

The concept of the oral-systemic link is important in both basic and clinical dentistry. The microbiome (microbiota) and exosomes are two prevalent issues in the modern medical researches. The common advent of oral and general microbiological investigation originated from the initial observations of oral bacteria within the dental plaque known as oral microbiome. In addition to oral diseases related to oral microbiome, the disruption of the oral and intestinal microbiome could result in the onset of systemic diseases. In the past decade, the exosomes have emerged in the field of the medical re

Gut Microbiota Profiles in Myopes and Nonmyopes.

PURPOSE: To identify compositional differences in the gut microbiome of nonmyopes (NM) and myopes using 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing and to investigate whether the microbiome may contribute to the onset or progression of the condition. METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from 52 adult participants, of whom 23 were NM, 8 were progressive myopes (PM), and 21 were stable myopes (SM). The composition of the gut microbiota in each group was analysed using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in alpha and beta diversity between the three groups (NM,

Rethinking Aspergillosis in the Era of Microbiota and Mycobiota.

Aspergillosis encompasses a wide range of clinical conditions based on the interaction between Aspergillus and the host. It ranges from colonization to invasive aspergillosis. The human lung provides an entry door for Aspergillus. Aspergillus has virulence characteristics such as conidia, rapid growth at body temperature, and the production of specific proteins, carbohydrates, and secondary metabolites that allow A. fumigatus to infiltrate the lung's alveoli and cause invasive aspergillosis. Alveolar epithelial cells play an important role in both fungus clearance and immune cell recruitment v

Involvement of the gut microbiota in cancer cachexia.

Cancer cachexia, or the unintentional loss of body weight in patients with cancer, is a multiorgan and multifactorial syndrome with a complex and largely unknown etiology; however, metabolic dysfunction and inflammation remain hallmarks of cancer-associated wasting. Although cachexia manifests with muscle and adipose tissue loss, perturbations to the gastrointestinal tract may serve as the frontline for both impaired nutrient absorption and immune-activating gut dysbiosis. Investigations into the gut microbiota have exploded within the past two decades, demonstrating multiple gut-tissue axes;

Effects of gut microbiota on neurodegenerative diseases.

A progressive degradation of the brain's structure and function, which results in a reduction in cognitive and motor skills, characterizes neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Huntington's disease (HD). The morbidity linked to NDs is growing, which poses a severe threat to human being's mental and physical ability to live well. The gut-brain axis (GBA) is now known to have a crucial role in the emergence of NDs. The gut microbiota is a conduit for the GBA, a two-way communication system between the

Endometrial Microbiota and Immune Tolerance in Pregnancy.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the uterus has its own microbiota. However, there is no consensus on endometrial microbiota composition, thus its role in the healthy uterine environment is still a frontier topic. Endometrial receptivity is key to embryo implantation, and in this specific context immunological tolerance against fetal antigens and the tightly regulated expression of inflammatory mediators are fundamental. According to recent evidence, endometrial microbiota may interact in a very dynamic way with the immune system during the peri-conceptional stage and later during pregnan

Assessing microbiota composition in the context of aging.

The gut microbiota is a complex community of different microbial species that influence many aspects of health. Consequently, shifts in the composition of gut microbiome have been proposed to exert negative effects on the host physiology, leading to the pathogenesis of various age-related disorders, including cardiovascular and neurological diseases, type 2 diabetes, obesity, non-alcoholic liver disease, and other pathological conditions. Thus, understanding how the gut microbiota influences the aging-related decline is particularly topical. Advances in next-generation sequencing techniques, t

Impact of gut microbiota on liver transplantation.

The gut microbiota has been gaining attention due to its interactions with the human body and its role in pathophysiological processes. One of the main interactions is the "gut-liver axis," in which disruption of the gut mucosal barrier seen in portal hypertension and liver disease can influence liver allograft function over time. For example, in patients who are undergoing liver transplantation, preexisting dysbiosis, perioperative antibiotic use, surgical stress, and immunosuppressive use have each been associated with alterations in gut microbiota, potentially impacting overall morbidity an

Understanding the gut microbiota in cancer cachexia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cachexia is a complex, multifactorial syndrome primarily characterized by weight loss, muscle wasting, anorexia, and systemic inflammation. It is prevalent in cancer patients and is associated with a poor prognosis, including lower resistance to intervention toxicity, quality of life, and survival, compared to patients without the syndrome. The gut microbiota and its metabolites have been shown to influence host metabolism and immune response. Our article reviews the current evidence suggesting a role of gut microbiota in the development and progression of cachexia, while di
