This collective review includes all available case reports of smooth muscle (stromal) tumors of the esophagus in the world literature. Compiling this review, we endeavored to examine cumulative and recently collected data of both benign and malignant esophageal smooth muscle tumors found in the literature spanning the period from 1875 to 1996, which totaled 1679 leiomyomas (LMs) and 165 leiomyosarcomas (LMSs). The peak age of occurrence of benign smooth muscle tumors in the esophagus was found to be between the ages of 30 and 59, whereas the highest frequency of malignant tumors was seen later

A case of focal myositis in a healthy 68-year-old woman is described. The patient was admitted for evaluation of a painful soft-tissue mass localised on the medial side of the left thigh, initially misdiagnosed as thrombophlebitis of the v. saphena magna. Laboratory data were normal, in particular sedimentation rate and muscle enzyme levels. After exclusion of venous thrombosis, the mass localised in the left m. gracilis was surgically removed. Histologic examination of the biopsy specimen showed muscle cell necrosis and severe inflammation, with lymphocytic infiltration leading to the diagnos

OBJECTIVE: Denervation hypertrophy is an entity well recognized in the neurology literature, but with little mention in the radiology literature. Denervation hypertrophy occurs when a muscle paradoxically enlarges rather than atrophies in response to loss of innervation. The purpose of this report is to describe the MR appearance of true hypertrophy and pseudohypertrophy of muscle following denervation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical data and MRI findings in three patients with muscle enlargement due to denervation hypertrophy are reviewed retrospectively. Two women and one man aged 19-8

OBJECTIVE: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) represents the only curative treatment option for several hematological neoplasms. This study aimed to assess the parameters of body composition as predictors of post-transplant overall survival (OS) and adverse events in patients with leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 122 adult patients who underwent their first allo-HSCT. The CT-based semi-automated measurement of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT)

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is the most common paraneoplastic disorder associated with thymic neoplasms. MG can develop after thymectomy, and this condition is referred to post-thymectomy myasthenia gravis (PTMG). Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB), is a rare form of bronchiolitis and is largely restricted to East Asia, has been reported in association with thymic neoplasms. Only three cases of combined MG and DPB have been reported in the literature.

Oculocutaneous oncocytic tumors (OCOTs) are uncommon neoplasms that have been reported only rarely in the dermatopathology literature and whose immunophenotypic profile has not been well characterized. The clinical, histologic, and immunophenotypic features of 2 cases seen by the authors were assessed, and relevant publications in the literature were reviewed. Both patients with OCOTs were adult women with gradually enlarging, asymptomatic lesions involving the caruncle; they were locally excised. Histologically, the tumors were well-circumscribed nodules comprised of large oxyphilic cells arr

CASE HISTORY: A marked perineal swelling was identified in a 4-year-old entire nulliparous Huntaway bitch. The mass was first observed at last oestrus, 6 months previously.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: A diffuse swelling was visible in the perineum that extended from the anus to the vulva. The vulval commisure was distorted ventrolaterally. An extraluminal mass involved the vulva, vestibule and vagina. On rectal and vaginal examination the rostral extent could not be identified. There was no palpable intraluminal mass. The bitch produced a reduced urine flow, and there was complete voiding of the bladd

Leiomyomas of the prostate are uncommon benign tumors. We report the case of a 67-year-old man who underwent an emergent, open prostatectomy for symptomatic relief of clinically severe benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Ultrasound showed a severe prostatic enlargement with urinary tract obstruction. Gross pathology findings showed a 134-g prostate gland containing a 2.5-cm-long, well-circumscribed lesion. Histological findings showed a bland, smooth muscle neoplasm with positive staining for smooth muscle markers. No necrosis, nuclear atypia, or mitoses are identified. In such cases, gross an

Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle neoplasm. They can occur in any organ, but the most common forms occur in the uterus, small bowel and the esophagus. Leiomyomas of breast are rare benign non epithelial tumor. Only 21 cases of solitary parenchymal leiomyoma of the breast have been reported. This is the first case of multiple breast leiomyomas being reported in the literature. Here we report a case of a 38-year-old woman who presented to us with a painless right sided breast swelling. Histopathology revealed a growth pattern of interlacing fascicles of smooth-muscle cells consistent with leio

Here we describe the rare case of a 55-year-old man with medial rectus muscle myositis as an atypical presentation of non-Hodgkin B-cell mucosa-associated lymphoma (MALT). Pathology and immunohistochemistry of the affected muscle confirmed the diagnosis of a neoplasm. The primary etiology of orbital myositis is Graves' ophthalmopathy, but several other diseases may cause this clinical presentation. Therefore, the neoplastic causes must be eliminated from the differential diagnoses. non-Hodgkin B-cell mucosa-associated lymphoma is the most common histological type of lymphoma in the orbit, with

While Graves' disease is the most common cause of enlarged extraocular muscles, other disorders may masquerade as dysthyroid orbitopathy. The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of the computed tomographic (CT) scans of 60 patients with nonthyroid enlarged extraocular muscles to establish the differential radiographic features of these disorders. The diseases were classified as primary or local invasion of neoplasm (26%), inflammatory (25%), metastatic tumor (20%), vascular (13%), infection (12%), and acromegaly (3%). The inflammatory cases demonstrated more bilateral involvement (40%)

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of intermediate biological potential characterized by myofibroblastic spindle-cell proliferation and a variable inflammatory infiltrate. Although IMT may arise in a wide range of anatomical locations, primary involvement of the psoas muscle is exceptionally uncommon and may present significant diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific clinical and radiological features.

INTRODUCTION: Mobile wad of Henry (MOH) is a preferred surgical term used to describe the lateral compartment muscles of the forearm consisting of brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis. The lesions in this compartment are uncommon. In this paper, we describe the largest series of the MOH lesions including their demographics, imaging appearances and importance of surgical anatomy whilst managing MOH lesions via radiological or surgical interventions.
METHODS: A retrospective search of oncology database for lesions in MOH at our tertiary orthopaedic oncology institute was p

We report a unique uterine neoplasm, favoured to represent an isolated extrapulmonary lymphangioleiomyoma with unusual pathological features, in a postmenopausal woman without tuberous sclerosis complex. The large neoplasm consisted of smooth muscle fascicles and cystic spaces lined by lymphatic cells, which were negative for the melanocytic staining that is characteristically positive in lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). There are fewer than 30 cases of uterine LAM reported, none of which have demonstrated this morphology or these immunohistochemical findings. The origin of LAM cells in the mor

A neck mass, which rapidly increases in size over several weeks, is concerning for all involved. When accompanied by other symptoms suggesting sinister underlying pathology, efficient management and rapid diagnosis are vital. The causes may include primary or metastatic carcinoma, or lymphoreticular malignancy. Other non-sinister pathology may account for the swelling such as reactive lymph nodes or benign neoplasms. A benign neoplasm of the lymphatic system known as a lymphangioma may rarely be the cause of a mass in the neck in adults. More commonly found in infants, with approximately 40% f

The presence of fatty tissue in the myometrium is anomalous; this alteration has been interpreted either as a lipomatous degeneration or as a metaplasia of smooth muscle cells or, still, as a real neoplasm, frequently associated with a leiomyoma, the so-called lipoleiomyoma. The observation of a case of lipoleiomyoma stimulated us to ascertain the real incidence of this lesion which is commonly considered to be rare. We examined 620 single or multiple uterine leiomyomas with extensive sampling of all the areas suspected to contain fatty tissue islands. Five times out of seven the presence of f

Reproductive pathology of domestic guinea pigs is underreported to date. To provide a comprehensive review of uterine disease in guinea pigs, we performed a retrospective study of the pathology archives of the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine. By histology, 13 of 37 uterine lesions in 23 animals were neoplastic; the other 24 nonneoplastic lesions included cystic endometrial hyperplasia (16 of 24), endometrial hemorrhage (3 of 24), pyometra (2 of 24), polyp (2 of 24), and mucometra (1 of 24). The most common guinea pig uterine neoplasms were uterine leiomyomas (6 of 13),

INTRODUCTION: Intramuscular hemangioma, is a distinctive type of vascular tumor occurring within the skeletal muscle. Most IMH are located in the lower extremity, particularly in the muscles of the thigh and rarely in head and neck region.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: 35 years old male reported with a swelling in the left cheek region since 3 years. Clinical and radiological evaluation leads to the diagnosis of Intramuscular hemangioma. Surgical excision was performed and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis.
DISCUSSION: Hemangiomas of skeletal muscle represent 0.8% of all benign vascular neoplas
