BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a prognostic factor for patients with liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, and it affects the onset of hepatic encephalopathy. Therefore, the prevention of sarcopenia contributes to the improvement of the prognosis of patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). We focused on changes of hand grip strength (HGS), one of the indicators of sarcopenia. However, there are little data investigating the impact of physical activity (PA) on HGS in patients with CLD. This study aimed to clarify whether PA contributes to the prevention of muscle weakness in patients with

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2015eng
UNLABELLED: A 24-year-old woman suffering from back and hip pain with difficulty in walking was reported. She had proximal muscle weakness. Laboratory findings led to the diagnosis of osteomalacia. Positivity of antibodies strengthened suspicion of celiac disease. In patients with proximal muscle weakness, osteomalacia should be considered in differential diagnosis even in a young woman.
INTRODUCTION: A 24-year-old woman suffering from back pain, bilateral hip pain, and difficulty in walking was reported. Her symptoms had started in the first trimester of pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) has one of the worst prognoses among gynecologic cancers. An appropriate screening method is not available for EOC, and the initial symptoms such as abdominal pain or bloating, anorexia, and urinary urgency are vague. As a result, most cases of EOC are diagnosed at an advanced stage.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report novel insights gained from the case of a 45-year-old, gravida 0, para 0 woman who presented to the emergency department with complaints of general weakness, fatigue, and myalgia over the previous two months. She reported progressive muscle

European spine journal : official publication of the European Spine Society, the European Spinal Deformity Society, and the European Section of the Cervical Spine Research Society2013eng
PURPOSE: This report presents a case of wrist drop and muscle weakness of the fingers as a false localizing sign induced by stenosis of the upper cervical spine caused by a bony anomaly.
METHODS: A 77-year-old male complained of severe muscle weakness of the right hand. Cervical spine MRI showed a severe and sharp compression of the spinal cord from the dorsal side between C2 and C3 with intramedullary intensity changes and mild stenosis at C3/4 and C4/5.
RESULTS: The patient underwent laminectomy of C2, cranial side laminotomy of C3, and laminectomy of C4. Decompression of the spinal cord w

We report a 28-year-old male with dysferlinopathy, who has remained asymptomatic for 10 years from a rhabdomyolysis-like episode. He had been in good health since birth, but felt difficulty in walking after a month and a half of manual labor at 18 years old (at the year 2000). Rhabdomyolysis was suspected because of muscle weakness and elevated serum CK of 28,094U/L. He was hospitalized and his muscle weakness improved. He was referred to us, because his serum CK remained around 2,000U/L. Histological analysis of muscle, when anti-dysferlin antibody was unavailable, was not informative but lat

We report a case of a patient with mild chronic renal insufficiency who had been taking simvastatin for over a year and developed acute weakness within 3 weeks after the start of treatment with colchicine for acute gouty bursitis. Profound muscle weakness of lower extremities with inability to stand up and/or walk was present. Elevated muscle enzymes and findings on electromyography were consistent with myopathy. Rapid improvement in muscle strength accompanied by prompt resolution of abnormal elevation of muscle enzymes followed cessation of both medications. Both colchicine and statin therap

From 1979 to 1992, 170 muscular assessments performed on 33 patients with Friedreich's Ataxia were reviewed. The average followup was 6 years. All muscle evaluations were done by the same team. It was possible to delineate a fairly regular and statistically significant pattern of slowly progressive and symmetrical loss of strength affecting mainly the lower limbs, and more specifically the pelvic girdle muscles. The first significant weakness was observed in the hip extensor group, followed in a variable fashion by other muscle groups of the lower limb. Upper limb and trunk muscles remained re

A case of polymyositis with repeated dysphagia and muscle weakness associated with peculiar findings of skin was reported. The patient was a 67-year-old man. His birth and development was normal. There was no family history of neuromuscular disease. On 26th March 1987 he was admitted to a hospital because of dysarthria and dysphagia after fever and diagnosed as having viral myositis. His conditions improved spontaneously with bed rest and he left hospital on 14th April. On 23rd April he had chill and sore throat with fever. On 27th he was admitted to the same hospital because of dysarthria and

A 16-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of abdominal pain, paresis of extremities, and muscle weakness. Bartter's syndrome was suspected because of the features of the hypokalemia, hyperaldosteronism, hyperreninemia, increased concentration of plasma angiotensin I & II, the defect in distal fractional reabsorption of chloride and normotension. The concentrations of the plasma angiotensin II and aldosterone, however, were decreased to normal levels after admission probably due to a decrease in the salt intake because of the regular hospital diet. Furthermore, the hyperplasia of

A myopathy characterized by restricted involvement of few muscles and inflammatory cell infiltration was observed in three families. In the first family, clinical features, hereditary transmission and biopsy findings were consistent with the diagnosis of facioscapulohumeral dystrophy. However in three of the four affected members, the occurrence of atrophies was specifically initiated by severe muscular pain. In the second family two 8-year-old identical twins had both marked facial weakness and atrophy limited to the right quadriceps femoris. In the third family, marked asymmetry of muscular

Early diagnosis of Bell's palsy is crucial for effective patient management in primary care settings. This study aimed to develop a simplified diagnostic tool to enhance the accuracy of identifying Bell's palsy among patients with facial muscle weakness. Data from 240 patients were analyzed using seven potential clinical evaluation indicators. Two diagnostic benchmarks were established: one based on clinical assessment and the other incorporating magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. A multivariate logistic regression model was developed based on these benchmarks, resulting in the constru

INTRODUCTION: In this study we quantitatively describe ocular weakness patterns in myasthenia gravis (MG) to help neurologists in making the clinical diagnosis and to investigate how the current outcome measures reflect ocular weakness in MG.
METHODS: We investigated ptosis and diplopia patterns in a retro- and prospective cohort of 306 MG patients. Diplopia was systematically examined by testing extra-ocular muscle (EOM) fatigability in two horizontal and four oblique directions for 60 seconds.
RESULTS: Of patients with initial symmetric ptosis, 40% developed asymmetric ptosis at the second

BACKGROUND: The risk of cardiovascular problems due to diabetes mellitus is highest among older Mexicans, and yet what remains to be determined is the association between muscle weakness and diabetes in this population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the association between muscle strength and diabetes among Mexican adults greater than 50 years of age.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
SETTING: National sample of households in both urban and rural areas.
PARTICIPANTS: A subsample of 1841 individuals aged 50 years and older was included from the 2012 Mexican Health and Aging St

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have suggested that differential weakness in muscles supplied by the same motor nerve supports the diagnosis of multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN).
METHODS: We describe the clinical, electrophysiological, neuroimaging, and laboratory findings of patients with a lower motor syndrome whose clinical presentation included differential finger extension weakness that we have seen in our neuromuscular clinic.
RESULTS: We identified 3 patients with hand weakness and 1 patient with asymmetric weakness of the upper extremity. Conduction blocks (CBs) were identified in 1 pa

OBJECTIVES: Dyspnoea is a common complaint among patients with thyrotoxicosis. However, its causative mechanisms have not been identified. We assessed the role of thoracic diaphragmatic muscle weakness in dyspnoea among patients with active Graves' disease.
METHODS: Twenty-seven patients (19 female, 8 male) with active Graves' disease were assessed for the clinical severity of dyspnoea, functional (pressure generating capacity) and anatomical aspects (thickness and excursion) of the diaphragm at presentation. The severity of dyspnoea was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the 6

The association of perturbed skeletal muscle metabolism with intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness (ICUAW) is not clear. The objective of the present study was to characterize temporal changes in skeletal muscle mitochondrial function, ATP concentration, and substrate utilization during and up to 6 mo post-ICU admission in critically ill patients, and to delineate mechanisms underpinning ICUAW by comparing the expression of genes involved in skeletal muscle mitochondrial function and substrate utilization in the critically ill patients to control groups that had either undergone elective
