Minimization of anti-hepatitis B surface antigen immunoglobulins for prophylaxis of hepatitis B viral recurrence in the first month after liver transplantation: the meaning of HBsAg quantitative level at the time of transplant.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus recurrence after liver transplantation (LT) has practically disappeared with a prophylaxis combining anti-hepatitis B surface antigen Immunoglobulins (HBIg) and antiviral drugs. Recently, cost-saving requirements pushed us to move from a fixed schedule of 50,000 IU intravenous HBIg in the first month after LT to an "on demand" administration guided by close monitoring of HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-HBV surface Antigen antibody (HBsAb) with a serological target of HBsAg negative and HBsAb>300 mIU/mL. In this context, we investigated the meaning of HBsAg qu

Calcitonin, estrogens and the bone.

Estrogen deficiency following natural or surgical menopause, is thought to be the main factor leading to postmenopausal bone loss. Furthermore, after estrogen failure a significant reduction of intestinal calcium absorption and a negativization of calcium balance has been observed. The mechanism of estrogen effect on skeletal tissue is not yet fully elucidated. Recently, specific receptors for estrogens in osteoblastic cells have been described; however their low density does not give a full explanation about their functional role. Therefore estrogens act, at least in part, indirectly through

Workplace incivility and employee sleep: The role of rumination and recovery experiences.

This study examines the role of negative work rumination and recovery experiences in explaining the association between workplace incivility and employee insomnia symptoms. Drawing on the perseverative cognition model of stress and the effort-recovery model, we hypothesize a moderated mediation model in which workplace incivility is associated with insomnia symptoms via negative work rumination. This indirect effect is proposed to be conditional on employees' reported level of recovery experiences (i.e., psychological detachment from work and relaxation during nonwork time). In examining this

A comparison of the positive and negative work attitudes of home health care and hospital nurses.

This article compares the positive and negative stress response work attitudes of 126 home health care registered nurses (RNs) and 145 hospital RNs. Home health care nurses reported significantly lower levels of the negative work attitudes, anger/hostility, and frustration with the system. There was no significant difference between the two groups of RNs among the positive work attitudes of job satisfaction, positive affect, hope, meaningfulness, manageability, and trust in the supervisor and the negative work attitudes frustration with the supervisor, job alienation, and negative affect.

Breast cancer attitudes, knowledge, and screening behavior in women with and without a family history of breast cancer.

Women volunteers with or without a first-degree relative with breast cancer (FDR) were compared on several measures. Relative to the comparison group, women in the FDR group had more negative attitudes about breast cancer (including more anxiety about breast cancer), viewed their risk for getting breast cancer as greater (although they underestimated the actual risk), and were more likely to engage in appropriate screening behavior. A high percentage of women in both groups stated that they would want to have a genetic test for breast cancer if it were generally available.

Further development and validation of the Unhelpful Thoughts and Beliefs About Stuttering (UTBAS) scales: relationship to anxiety and social phobia among adults who stutter.

BACKGROUND: In an initial validation study, the Unhelpful Thoughts and Beliefs About Stuttering (UTBAS I) scale, demonstrated excellent psychometric properties as a self-report measure of the frequency of unhelpful cognitions associated with social anxiety for adults who stutter. AIMS: The aim was to further validate the original UTBAS I scale, and to develop two additional scales to assess beliefs (UTBAS II) and anxiety (UTBAS III) associated with negative thoughts. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A total of 140 adults seeking speech-restructuring treatment for stuttering completed the original UTBAS

Common rather than unique aspects of repetitive negative thinking are related to depressive and anxiety disorders and symptoms.

Repetitive Negative Thinking (RNT) is assumed to be a transdiagnostic factor in depressive and anxiety disorders. We hypothesized that an underlying common dimension of RNT will be more strongly associated with each of the anxiety and depressive disorders, with comorbidity among disorders and with symptom severity than unique aspects of rumination and worry. In a cross-sectional study, 2143 adults diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria completed questionnaires for content-independent RNT, rumination and worry. 84% of the shared variance of worry and rumination overlapped with content-independe

Predictors of self-injurious behaviour exhibited by individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Presence of an autism spectrum disorder is a risk factor for development of self-injurious behaviour (SIB) exhibited by individuals with developmental disorders. The most salient SIB risk factors historically studied within developmental disorders are level of intellectual disability, communication deficits and presence of specific genetic disorders. Recent SIB research has expanded the search for risk factors to include less commonly studied variables for people with developmental disorders: negative affect, hyperactivity and impulsivity. METHOD: A heterogeneous sample of 617 ind

Explaining the gender difference in depressive symptoms.

It was hypothesized that women are more vulnerable to depressive symptoms than men because they are more likely to experience chronic negative circumstances (or strain), to have a low sense of mastery, and to engage in ruminative coping. The hypotheses were tested in a 2-wave study of approximately 1,100 community-based adults who were 25 to 75 years old. Chronic strain, low mastery, and rumination were each more common in women than in men and mediated the gender difference in depressive symptoms. Rumination amplified the effects of mastery and, to some extent, chronic strain on depressive sy

Who Are the Turkers? A Characterization of MTurk Workers Using the Personality Assessment Inventory.

As online data collection services such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) gain popularity, the quality and representativeness of such data sources have gained research attention. To date, the majority of existing studies have compared MTurk workers with undergraduate samples, localized community samples, or other Internet-based samples, and thus, there remains little known about the personality and mental health constructs of MTurk workers relative to a national representative sample. The present study addresses these limitations and broadens the scope of existing research through the use of

Factors affecting dental fear in French children aged 5-12 years.

BACKGROUND: While dental anxiety is often correlated with prior negative dental experience, prevention of dental anxiety should in theory include early exposure to the dental setting. OBJECTIVE: We set out to evaluate factors affecting dental fear in French children. METHODS: Dental fear was evaluated using a visual analogue scale (DF-VAS) in a group of 1303 French children (681 boys and 622 girls) aged 5-11 years (mean: 8.12 years, SD: 1.42 years). Indicators of caries and oral hygiene were evaluated on dental examination. Indicators of well-being related to oral health, dental experience,

Efficacy and safety of a new medicated nail hydrolacquer in the treatment of adults with toenail onychomycosis: A randomised clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: A new water-soluble formulation with ciclopirox has shown a higher penetration than other ciclopirox nail lacquers currently marketed, thus providing a higher concentration of ciclopirox into the nail. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new ciclopirox nail hydrolacquer compared with its vehicle and an active comparator (hydroxypropyl chitosan-based 80 mg/g ciclopirox nail lacquer) for the treatment of toenail fungal infection. Resilience in the initial year of caregiving for a family member with a traumatic spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals who assume caregiving duties for a family member disabled in a traumatic injury often exhibit considerable distress, yet few studies have examined characteristics of those who may be resilient in the initial year of caregiving. Reasoning from the influential Pearlin model of caregiving (Pearlin & Aneshensel, 1994) and the resilience process model (Bonanno, 2005), we expected a significant minority of caregivers would be chronically distressed and another group would be resilient throughout the inaugural year of caregiving for a person with a traumatic spinal cord injury

On assessing individual differences in rumination on sadness.

The Rumination on Sadness Scale (RSS), an individual-difference measure of rumination on sadness, was developed as an alternative to the Ruminative Responses scale of the Response Styles Questionnaire (RRRSQ; Nolen-Hoeksema & Morrow, 1991). Research has shown the RRRSQ to consist of multiple, not highly intercorrelated factors; only I factor explicitly addresses rumination. In Study 1, a 1-factor solution to a principal components analysis was shown to hold for responses to the RSS. The RSS was also shown to be reliable. In Study 2, convergent and discriminant validity of the RSS were assessed
