Hydronephrosis in children with abdominal and pelvic neoplasms: outcome and survival analysis of a single center pediatric oncology series.

PURPOSE: We ascertained the incidence and outcome of hydronephrosis related to abdominal or pelvic neoplasms and survival in pediatric patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our institutional oncology database between January 1995 and November 2009. We reviewed the charts of all children with intra-abdominal (nonrenal) and pelvic neoplasms. RESULTS: Of the 366 patients whose charts were reviewed 66 (18%) had hydronephrosis at some point during treatment, including 12 with hydronephrosis that was not caused by the neoplasm and 1 who was lost to followup, leaving 53 with

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm with disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis involving the uterus, mimicking primary mucinous endometrial adenocarcinoma: a case report.

We present a patient with a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, resulting in disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis (pseudomyxoma peritonei) with uterine involvement, and mimicking primary mucinous endometrial adenocarcinoma. On immunohistochemistry, neoplastic glands were cytokeratin 7-negative and cytokeratin 20-positive, indicating a gastrointestinal origin rather than a primary ovarian mucinous neoplasm. A diagnosis of uterine metastasis of appendiceal origin was made, based on the constellation of clinicopathological findings, that is, preceding appendiceal neoplasm, peritoneal invol

Early induction and increased risk of precursor B-cell neoplasms after exposure of infant or young-adult mice to ionizing radiation.

Epidemiological studies of atomic-bomb survivors have revealed an increased risk of lymphoid neoplasm (i.e. acute lymphoblastic leukemia) associated with radiation exposure. In particular, children are more susceptible to radiation-induced precursor lymphoid neoplasm than adults. Although ~75% of human lymphoid tumors are B-cell neoplasms, the carcinogenic risk associated with each stage of differentiation of B-cells after radiation exposure is poorly understood. Therefore, we irradiated mice at infancy or in young adulthood to investigate the effect of age at exposure on the risk of developin

Müllerian adenosarcomas with unusual growth patterns: staging issues.

Uterine adenosarcomas are uncommon mixed Müllerian neoplasms, most commonly arising in the uterine corpus. A new Federation of International Gynecologic Organization staging system for these tumors has recently been implemented. This staging system is an improvement on the earlier generic application of the 1988 Federation of International Gynecologic Organization staging system for endometrial cancer to adenosarcoma. Herein, we report 3 uterine adenosarcomas with unusual features. For 2 of these, no specific staging guidelines are provided by either the earlier or, more importantly, the new s

The impact of stage, grade, and mucinous histology on the efficacy of systemic chemotherapy in adenocarcinomas of the appendix: Analysis of the National Cancer Data Base.

BACKGROUND: Adenocarcinomas of the appendix represent a heterogeneous disease depending on the presence of mucinous histology, histologic grade, and stage. In the current study, the authors sought to explore the interplay of these factors with systemic chemotherapy in a large population data set. METHODS: Patients in the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) who were diagnosed with mucinous, nonmucinous, and signet ring cell-type appendiceal neoplasms from 1985 through 2006 were selected. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were developed. RESULTS: A total of 11,871 patients

Exploring beyond the typical Wilms tumor: What a radiologist needs to know.

Wilms tumor is the most common pediatric renal neoplasm. The diagnosis of Wilms tumor is made on imaging when the radiological features and age of presentation are typical. Percutaneous biopsy is reserved for cases with atypical imaging appearance or older age at presentation, as the biopsy itself upgrades Wilms tumor to stage III. This is more relevant when it comes to the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) guideline, which states that chemotherapy should be given before surgery, when compared to the Children's Oncology Group (COG) guideline, which recommends surgery, without

Excision of a rectal neoplasm using robotic transanal surgery (RTS): a description of the technique.

The approach to local excision of benign and early-stage, well-selected neoplasms of the rectum continues to evolve. We demonstrate here that local excision of a rectal neoplasm using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System can be successfully performed. To our knowledge, this is the first time robotic transanal surgery (RTS) has been used in this manner.

Association of Membranous WNT-1 and Nuclear mTOR with Endometrial Cancer Grade.

Endometrial cancer remains a common cancer affecting the female reproductive system. There is still a need for more efficient ways of determining the degree of malignancy and optimizing treatment. WNT and mTOR are components of signaling pathways within tumor cells, and dysfunction of either protein is associated with the pathogenesis of neoplasms. Therefore, the aim of our study was to assess the impact of subcellular WNT-1 and mTOR levels on the clinical course of endometrial cancer. WNT-1 and mTOR levels in the plasma membrane, nucleus, and cytoplasm were evaluated using immunohistochemical

Primary invasive carcinoma of the vagina.

Carcinoma of the vagina remains a problem for the clinician. The experience of The Ohio State University Gynecologic Oncology section confirms that careful consideration of urinary complaints is important in patient evaluation. In our experience, a fourth of the patients in our series with primary carcinoma of the vagina presented with urinary complaints with or without associated pain or bleeding. Vaginal bleeding was the most common complaint. Radical surgery may result in equally successful therapy, as does radiation for early stage disease. The disease stage was the single most important p

Static and flow cytometry.

It has been known for over 50 years that the amount of nuclear chromatin (DNA) in malignant neoplasms differs from that of homologous normal cells (1). More recently, it has been shown that nuclear DNA content correlates with the clinical outcome of various human neoplasms including urologic malignancies (2-10). An important problem in the care of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the prediction of the neoplasms malignant potential, and in turn the patient's prognosis. Various parameters have been used to assess the malignant potential of renal cell carcinoma, including clinical and

Trends of mortality among patients with malignant neoplasms of digestive system in the United States from 2007 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: While malignant neoplasms (MNs) of digestive system (MNDS) remain a leading cause of cancer mortality, evolving patterns of cause-specific deaths in the modern treatment era are poorly characterized. This study aimed to depict the trends in cause-specific mortality among MNDS patients in the U.S. from 2007 to 2021, stratified by clinical and demographic factors, with particular focus on the growing impact of non-neoplasm causes of death (CODs). METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed incidence-based mortality rates from 22 registries of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End R

Epidemiologic Trends and Factors Associated With Overall Survival for Patients With Hepatobiliary Neuroendocrine Neoplasms in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) constitute a heterogeneous group of rare tumors that most commonly originate from the gastrointestinal tract and lungs, with a consistently rising global incidence over recent decades. Hepatobiliary neuroendocrine neoplasms (HB-NENs), defined as primary NENs arising in the liver and biliary tract, are exceedingly uncommon, accounting for less than 0.5% of all NENs. Owing to their low incidence, atypical clinical presentations, and the paucity of large-scale datasets, no distinct World Health Organization (WHO) classification criteria have yet been es

Low-grade Mucinous Appendiceal Neoplasm: a Tumor in Disguise of Appendicitis.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are a rare malignancy, but it is an important diagnostic entity. Ultrasonography and CT scan represent useful method for diagnosis; however, diagnosis is often incidental or intraoperative finding at resection for suspicion of appendicitis. Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is commonly misdiagnosed as acute appendicitis, adnexal mass, or retroperitoneal tumors. Our case represents the importance of developing a high index of suspicion of appendiceal malignancy and mucocele rupture in patients who are planned for appendectomy. There is risk of second malignancy mostly

Can molecular patterns help to classify overlapping entities in myeloid neoplasms?

Myeloid neoplasms include myeloproliferative and myelodysplastic neoplasms and acute myeloid leukaemia. Historically, these diseases have been diagnosed based on clinicopathological features with sometimes arbitrary thresholds that have persisted even as molecular features were gradually incorporated into their classification. As such, although current diagnostic approaches can classify the majority of myeloid neoplasms accurately using a combination of molecular and clinicopathological features, some areas of overlap persist and occasionally pose diagnostic challenges. These include overlap a

PET/CT and Conventional Imaging for the Assessment of Neuroendocrine Prostate Cancer: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC) is a rare neoplasm, and the role of both conventional imaging (CI) and positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for its assessment has not been clearly evaluated and demonstrated. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the diagnostic performances of these imaging modalities in this setting. METHODS: A wide literature search of the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was made to find relevant published articles about the role of CI and PET/CT for the evaluation of NEPC.
