Assessing School Nurses' Mental Health Competence Training Needs.

BackgroundSchool nurses play a critical role in addressing K-12 students' mental and behavioral health (MH) needs, yet many report limited preparation to manage these concerns. Existing MH training often excludes school nurses or focuses narrowly on literacy, leaving gaps in communication, referral processes, and evidence-based interventions. This study evaluated school nurses' experiences and preferences for ongoing professional development.MethodsA descriptive survey was conducted with 15 school nurses from diverse educational settings assessed priority training areas and preferred formats.

Nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice towards immobility complications.

BACKGROUND: High-quality preventive nursing care and improved patient safety outcomes are more likely to be achieved by nurses who are knowledgeable about the risks associated with immobility and the evidence-based strategies for preventing and managing immobility-related complications. However, previous studies have reported variations in nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding patient immobility and its complications across different healthcare settings, highlighting areas for potential improvement. This study aimed to assess nurses' Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) toward immobilit

Burnout in new graduate nurses: a concept analysis.

OBJECTIVES: New graduate nurses (NGNs) experience higher rates of burnout compared to experienced nurses, and burnout is linked to intention to leave the profession. Despite its importance, the concept of burnout among NGNs is not well understood. As such, we aimed to explore and clarify the concept of burnout among NGNs by identifying its conceptual attributes, antecedents, and consequences. METHODS: Walker and Avant's concept analysis method was used. CINAHL, Scopus, and PubMed were searched for literature between 2015 and 2024 pertaining to burnout among NGNs; 16 articles were included. R

A qualitative study on nurses' experiences of mammography.

Past experiences, emotions, health behaviors, knowledge levels, and health beliefs about mammography can influence participation in future screening. Although nurses possess the necessary knowledge, their compliance with mammography screening schedules is lacking. This qualitative study explored the experiences of nurses who had undergone mammography screening. This study adopted a qualitative phenomenological research design. The study sample comprised 20 nurses who had undergone mammography in the last year, who were identified through purposive sampling, and who agreed to participate in the

"Believing facilitates success": psychiatric nurses' perspectives on recovery.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric nurses play a crucial role in patient recovery processes, and their attitudes during these processes can directly influence the recovery of individuals with mental illness. However, the concept of recovery in psychiatric disorders is perceived differently among nurses, which, in turn, can affect the patient's recovery trajectory. This study aims to explore and investigate the perspectives, thoughts and experiences of nurses working in psychiatric clinics about recovery in mental illnesses. METHODS: The study was conducted between September and December 2021 at a Mental

Assessing social determinants of health competencies among nurses.

BACKGROUND: Multiple national nursing organizations have advocated for improving health professionals' understanding of social determinants of health (SDOH) to enhance healthcare access, quality, and outcomes. PURPOSE: This project developed a self-assessment questionnaire to evaluate nursing professionals' self-perceptions of competencies in addressing SDOH, as few tools exist to measure this. METHODS: A total of 690 nurses completed the 23-item questionnaire. FINDINGS: In total, 690 nurses answered the SDOH self-assessment questionnaire. Cronbach's Alpha was 0.99. Nurses reported the high

The continuous exposure to suffering, death, and overwhelming demands has the potential to lead to compassion fatigue, a state of emotional, physical, and cognitive exhaustion. RESEARCH AIM: The study aimed to explore and understand the phenomenon of compassion fatigue in nurses as the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. RESEARCH DESIGN: A constructivist grounded theory design was used. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT: The research data were collected from 20 nurses

Update on Valvular Heart Disease for Registered Nurses.

Over the last few decades, there have been dramatic advances in the understanding of the mechanisms of valvular heart disease and development of percutaneous treatment options. These innovations have resulted in the need for a multidisciplinary heart team approach for quality patient outcomes, a team in which nursing is an integral member. This update provides an overview of the major valve diseases, current guideline recommendations, catheter-based treatment options and key elements of nursing care: physical examination, diagnostic testing, pre- and post-procedure care protocols, and patient

Providing physical relief for nurses by collaborative robotics.

Manual patient handling is one of the most significant challenges leading to musculoskeletal burden among healthcare workers. Traditional working techniques could be enhanced by innovations that can be individually adapted to the physical capacity of nurses. We evaluated the use of a robotic system providing physical relief by collaboratively assisting nurses in manual patient handling tasks. By quantifying kinetic and muscle activity data, it was possible to distinguish two kinds of movement patterns. Highly asymmetric postures and movements corresponded to distinct extremes in lower limb and

Getting grounded: Educational foundations for nurses' lifelong learning.

Lifelong learning is key to excellent nursing. Ensuring nurses have a strong foundation for lifelong learning requires a connection between pre-licensure nursing education and ongoing workplace learning. Currently, however, a line deeply divides nurses' learning during post-secondary education and their learning in the workplace. Expanding on the findings from a previously published grounded theory study exploring workplace learning in experienced nurses, I explore aspects of the theory relevant to nursing education in more depth. I describe the concept of Getting Grounded, a process of develo

Sickle Cell Disease Care Planning for School Nurses.

Schoolchildren with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience physiologic and psychologic stress that can affect school functioning, mental well-being, and physical health. Student needs are unique and individualized; however, school nurses can support students and families with SCD through comprehensive and thorough care planning efforts. In addition to components specific to individual prescriptions and other nonpharmacological therapies, school nurses should consider school access and inclusion, pain management, racism, and disease self-management when care planning. As a healthcare provider who

Contemporary Insights into Cancer Cachexia for Oncology Nurses.

Cachexia is a complex, multiorgan phenomenon targeting skeletal muscle resulting from systemic metabolic imbalances. Multifocal in nature, It's ultimate outcome is significant muscle degradation and loss of adipose tissue exhibited as the "wasting syndrome" which is associated with significant functional decline. Currently, there are no approved biomarkers for screening nor therapeutic options to manage cancer cachexia. Furthermore, multiple psychosocial sequelae characterize the patient and family coping paradigm. Heightened education about the pathophysiology of cancer cachexia and awareness

Nurses' Knowledge of Opioids: Foundations for Clinical Practice.

BACKGROUND: The opioid crisis has influenced practice changes to mitigate risks to patients receiving opioids. It is essential that nurses understand contemporary guidelines to provide safe patient care for patients receiving opioids. PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess general knowledge of opioids among nurses in nonprescribing patient care roles. METHODS: A survey was developed, validated, and deployed to 564 nurses in a large hospital system. RESULTS: Nurses had strong knowledge of basic pharmacology, the conjunctive use of nonopioids for pain relief, and differences in analgesia
