Leukemia Incidence by Occupation and Industry: A Cohort Study of 2.3 Million Workers from Ontario, Canada.

Although a significant body of evidence has attributed certain occupational exposures with leukemia, such as benzene, formaldehyde, 1,3-butadiene and ionizing radiation, more research is needed to identify work environments at increased risk for this disease. Our study aimed to identify occupational and industry groups associated with an elevated incidence of leukemia using a diverse cohort of workers' compensation claimants from Ontario, Canada. A total of 2,363,818 workers in the Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) cohort, with claims between 1983-2019, were followed for malignan

The functional impairment of different subtypes and occupational states in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to explore the associations between clinical symptoms, demographic variables, social and neurocognitive functioning in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder (BD) stratified by subgroups of DSM-IV BD (type I (BD-I) and type II (BD-II)) and occupational status (employed/unemployed), and to highlight the significance of occupational status when assessing social and neurocognitive functioning in euthymic BD patients. METHODS: A total of 81 euthymic BD patients were participated in the study. The severity of the depressive and manic/hypomanic symptoms was measured using t

Post-stroke fatigue: qualitative study of three focus groups.

Fatigue affects many persons after cerebrovascular accident, particularly those with mild stroke. A qualitative methodology using focus groups with 19 community-living post-stroke survivors was utilized to explore the occupational impact of fatigue as communicated by the participants. Although self-report of a small sample of the United States' post-stroke population will have limitations in generalizability, this study identifies specific health-related quality of life issues that can occur with post-stroke fatigue. The participants felt unprepared for the fatigue phenomenon and struggled to

[Extensive treatment of teacher's voice disorders in health spa].

Treatment in a health spa with proper infrastructure and professional medical care can provide optimal conditions for intensive voice rehabilitation, especially for people with occupational voice disorders. The most numerous group of people with voice disorders are teachers. In Poland, they have an opportunity to take care of, or regain, their health during a one-year paid leave. The authors describe a multi-specialist model of extensive treatment of voice disorders in a health spa, including holistic and interdisciplinary procedures in occupational dysphonia. Apart from balneotherapy, the spa

NeuFlex compared with Sutter prostheses: a blind, prospective, randomised comparison of Silastic metacarpophalangeal joint prostheses.

Forty patients (156 metacarpophalangeal joints) with mutilating rheumatoid arthritis were randomly allocated in a blinded manner to have either NeuFlex or Sutter implants. Indications for operation were pain and severe deformity. Thirty-nine patients were followed up postoperatively for one year. An independent physiotherapist and occupational therapist examined each one. Grip strength, range of motion, and pain during activity and at rest were measured. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) assessed the patients' evaluation of their occupational performance. Both groups had ove

[Assessment of voice acoustic parameters in female teachers with diagnosed occupational voice disorders].

BACKGROUND: Laryngovideostroboscopy is the method most frequently used in the assessment of voice disorders. However, the employment of quantitative methods, such as voice acoustic analysis, is essential for evaluating the effectiveness of prophylactic and therapeutic activities as well as for objective medical certification of larynx pathologies. The aim of this study was to examine voice acoustic parameters in female teachers with occupational voice diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acoustic analysis (IRIS software) was performed in 66 female teachers, including 35 teachers with occupational

Estimating occupational radiation doses when individual dosimetry information is not available: a job exposure matrix.

BACKGROUND: A job exposure matrix (JEM) was developed for a population based case control study to assess the possible association between occupational radiation and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. METHODS: Using published radiation monitoring data, we developed a radiation JEM composed of estimated annual dose distributions, categorized by time period, for a broad range of occupational and industrial groups. RESULTS: When information is available to correctly assess an individual's exposure status, the annual dose distributions in the JEM can be used in conjunction with job histories to estimate th

Health and safety management actions to reduce the impact that medication can have on occupational risks in SMEs.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational risks and accidents are a global concern, so this analysis has been undertaken by a multitude of researchers. However, there is a limited body of research specifically addressing the influence of medication on occupational risks and, more notably, the development of measures aimed at controlling or reducing the impact that such medication may have on workplace safety and health. This scientific gap is even greater among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). METHODS: The general objective of the research presented here is to identify and explore possible health

Determining the direction of pro-safety activities using selected methods of statistical analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the strength of the correlation between the studied characteristics describing accident events. METHODS: Statistical methods were used for the analysis, particularly Pearson's linear correlation analysis. The study was conducted using PQStat v.1.6.8 statistical software. This study present an analysis of occupational activity and causes of accidents in the studied seniority groups, using Pearson's linear correlation analysis. Determining the strength of correlation, rather than causality, allows for the identification of key characteristics of

Risks of Leukemia in Various Industrial Groups in Korea: A Retrospective National Cohort Study.

It is known that occupational exposure to specific agents is associated with leukemia. However, whether the occupational risks of leukemia differ among various industrial groups remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to elucidate the occupational risks of leukemia among different worker groups by industry. Data for a total of 11,050,398 people from the National Health Insurance System's claim data from 2007 to 2015 were analyzed. By cohort inclusion of workers whose industry had not changed for three years and with total workers as a control group, the risk for a specific in

Association between occupational noise and vibration and anxiety in the South Korean working population: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although occupational exposure to noise and vibration is common, its effect on psychological wellbeing is poorly understood. This study investigated the relationship between occupational exposure to noise and vibration and anxiety among Korean workers. METHODS: Data from the 5th Korean Working Conditions Survey, conducted in 2017, were used. Participants were classified into four groups according to their level of exposure, and anxiety was assessed using a self-report questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the significance of the association between exposu

Danish Cancer Registry as a resource for occupational research.

With its long tradition of population registration, Denmark has outstanding possibilities for occupational health research. The municipality registers date back to 1924, the national death and cancer registers to 1943, and unique personal identification numbers were introduced in 1968. For studies on occupational cancer, the cancer register has been linked with census data, pension data, and personnel files from various companies. Suspected associations between occupational exposures and cancer have been studied. For example, women in dry cleaning exposed to tetrachloroethylene had an excess r

Reproductive disorders and pregnancy outcomes among female flight attendants.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposures in female aircrew may cause adverse pregnancy outcomes and menstrual disturbances. We studied reproductive health among female flight attendants.
