Comprehensive approach to simultaneous molar intrusion and canine retraction in the treatment of Class II anterior open bite using miniscrew anchorage.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior open bite is one of the most difficult malocclusions to correct in orthodontic treatment. Molar intrusion using miniscrew anchorage has been developed as a new strategy for open bite correction; however, this procedure still has an important concern about prolonged treatment duration in the patient with anteroposterior discrepancy due to the separate step-by-step movement of anterior and posterior teeth. OBJECTIVE: This article illustrates a comprehensive orthodontic approach for dentoalveolar open bite correction of an adult patient, by using miniscrew. CASE REPORT: A

A single dose of doxycycline after an ixodes ricinus tick bite to prevent Lyme borreliosis: An open-label randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: A single dose of doxycycline after a tick bite can prevent the development of Lyme borreliosis in North America, but extrapolation to Europe is hampered by differences in Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies and tick species. We assessed the efficacy of prophylaxis after a tick bite in Europe. METHODS: We conducted an open-label randomized controlled trial, administering a single dose of 200 mg doxycycline within 72 h after removing an attached tick from the skin, compared to no treatment. Potential participants ≥ 8 years of age who reported a recent tick bite online were i

Nonsurgical correction of a severe anterior open bite with mandibular molar intrusion using mini-implants and the multiloop edgewise archwire technique.

This article reports the case of a 24-year-old man with a large anterior open bite, mild mandibular crowding, increased overjet, no passive lip sealing, and Angle Class I malocclusion. The treatment results were achieved by mandibular molar intrusion using 1.8 × 8.5-mm mini-implants (C-implants) inserted between the mandibular first and second molars bilaterally. A 2.5-mm molar intrusion and open-bite closure occurred within 8 months. The multiloop edgewise archwire technique helped to intrude the posterior teeth. Total treatment time was 20 months. Fifty months postretention records are also

Treatment of skeletal open bite using a navigation system: CAD/CAM osteotomy and drilling guides combined with pre-bent titanium plates.

Severe skeletal open bite associated with posterior vertical maxillary excess and mandibular deformity is considered a difficult problem in orthodontic and surgical treatment. This study used a navigation system for the correction of severe skeletal open bite in order to accurately transfer the virtual plan to the actual operation and achieve precise rigid internal fixation in bimaxillary osteotomies of the jaws. Twelve patients with a severe skeletal open bite associated with vertical maxillary excess and mandibular deformity were recruited. All patients underwent Le Fort I osteotomy and bila

Orthodontic treatment of severe anterior open bite and alveolar bone defect complicated by an ankylosed maxillary central incisor: a case report.

Incisor trauma is common in children, and can cause severe complications during adolescent growth and development. This report describes the treatment of a 16-year-old patient with severe anterior open bite due to ankylosis of the maxillary left incisor after dental trauma as an 8-year-old. No examination or active treatment was undertaken until he was 16 years old. Clinical examination revealed that the maxillary left incisor was severely intruded accompanied by a vertical alveolar bone defect. Orthodontic treatment combined with surgical luxation took 3 years and 7 months. During treatment,

Vertical settling elastics for resolving posterior open bite during the fine-tuning staging for clear aligner therapy: A prospective clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Posterior open bite (POB) is a common and challenging complication during clear aligner therapy, primarily because of the biomechanical susceptibility of posterior teeth to intrusion, occlusal block effect, and excessive expansion. Although posterior vertical elastic traction has been proposed as a potential intervention, its clinical efficacy and the factors influencing treatment outcomes remain poorly understood. This prospective study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of posterior settling elastics in correcting POB and identify key predictors of treatment success. METHODS: F

Clear aligner therapy for adult anterior open bite: a systematic review, descriptive evidence map, and certainty appraisal of reported dentoskeletal changes.

BACKGROUND: Clear aligner therapy is increasingly used for adult anterior open-bite correction, but the certainty of evidence, reported dentoskeletal changes, and clinical boundaries of this approach remain unclear. This systematic review aimed to summarize overbite change and descriptively map the dentoskeletal findings reported in the current clinical literature. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA. PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library were searched. Reference lists of included studies and relevant reviews were also checked, but no additional eligib

Airway-Facially Generated Treatment Planning (AFGTP) in Complex Anterior Open-Bite Cases Integrating Airway Screening, FGTP, Aligner Therapy, and Skeletal Anchorage.

Complex anterior open-bite malocclusions require a holistic, risk-stratified approach that extends beyond dental alignment to address the airway, facial form, function, biomechanics, and periodontium. This article outlines a contemporary airway-facially generated treatment planning (AFGTP) protocol that begins with airway screening and dentofacial analysis, incorporates functional and biomechanical planning, and integrates orthodontic execution using clear aligners and skeletal anchorage (temporary anchorage devices [TADs]) to achieve posterior intrusion and mandibular counterclockwise autorot

Correction of a severe post-surgical iatrogenic class II anterior open bite with lingual appliances and mini-screws: a case report.

An iatrogenic open bite after orthognathic surgery is an uncommon malocclusion, with only one documented case reported in the literature. However, the open bite in this case report was not a true open bite, as it resulted from the interferences between the maxillary second molars and mandibular retromolar bones. This case report aims to present the management of a true iatrogenic open bite with posterior teeth in centric occlusion, occurring after mandibular setback surgery. The anterior open bite accompanied a severe class II malocclusion and increased lower anterior facial height. The patien

Clear aligner treatment of an adult open bite with bilateral missing mandibular first molars through molar protraction with Albert cantilever arms.

Premature loss of first permanent molars is a common occurrence in clinical practice, leading to abnormal occlusion and inefficient mastication for patients. This case report presented the orthodontic retreatment of a 32-year-old female patient who suffered from premature loss of mandibular bilateral first molars. The mesial tipping of the mandibular second molars led to an occlusal interference, resulting in a clockwise rotation of the lower jaw and an anterior open bite (AOB). We achieved long-distance molar mesialization using clear aligners with Albert cantilever arms. After 42 months of t

Treatment of severe open bite and mandibular condyle anterior displacement by mini-screws and four second molars extraction: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are closely related to high-angle and skeletal Class II malocclusion. Sometimes pathological changes in the mandibular condyle can cause open bite to occur after growth is complete. CASE SUMMARY: This article is about the treatment of an adult male patient with a severe hyperdivergent skeletal Class II base, an unusual and gradually occurring open bite and an abnormal mandibular condyle anterior displacement. Because the patient refused surgery, four second molars with cavities and root canal therapy were extracted, and four mini-screws were

Aesthetic rehabilitation in a patient with skeletal mandibular deficiency and open bite: journey from splinted metalloceramic prosthesis to all-ceramic crowns.

The DNA adduct O(6)-methylguanine (O(6)MeG) induced by environmental genotoxins and anticancer drugs is a highly mutagenic, genotoxic and apoptotic lesion. Apoptosis induced by O(6)MeG requires mismatch repair (MMR) and proliferation. Models of O(6)MeG-triggered cell death postulate that O(6)MeG/T mispairs activate MMR giving rise to either direct genotoxic signaling or secondary lesions that trigger apoptotic signaling in the 2(nd) replication cycle. To test these hypotheses, we used a highly synchronized cell system competent and deficient for the repair of O(6)MeG adducts, which were induce

Long-term stability of a Class III malocclusion with severe anterior open bite and bilateral posterior crossbite in a hyperdivergent patient.

Anterior open bite malocclusion is generally associated with several causes. This case report describes the 2-phase treatment of a 13-year-old boy with a Class III malocclusion, severe anterior open bite, and bilateral posterior crossbite treated without surgical intervention. An orthopedic approach was performed in phase 1 with a hyrax-type palatal expander, followed by maxillary protraction with a facemask for a 10-month period to promote the correction of transverse and sagittal deviations. In phase 2, a comprehensive orthodontic approach using fixed preadjusted appliances associated with i

Treatment of adult patient with hyperdivergent retrognathic phenotype and anterior open bite: report of a case with non-surgical orthodontic approach.

Adult patients with anterior open bite and hyperdivergent retrognathic phenotype demand complex treatments, as premolar extractions, molar intrusion or orthognathic surgery. In the present clinical case, a young adult patient without significant growth, with Class I and anterior open bite, was treated with four premolar extractions. The therapeutic result shows good intercuspation, good facial esthetic, good function balance, and stability in a two-year post-fixed treatment follow-up.

Spontaneous and Dramatic Improvements in Open Bite Deformity Secondary to Large Maxillofacial Venous Malformation With Macroglossia After Sclerotherapy and Laser Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Large maxillofacial venous malformation (VM) lesions can affect the craniofacial skeleton, causing occlusal and craniofacial deformity. Few studies have discussed the management of these skeletal disorders. It is unclear whether orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery are necessary after such a VM lesion has been significantly reduced. METHODS: A 13-year-old boy with a large, extensive maxillofacial VM lesion, severe facial asymmetry, macroglossia, and lower lip hypertrophy visited our department in 2010. He received more than 100 sclerotherapy treatments and 20 laser treat
