Association between temporomandibular disorders with clinical and sociodemographic features: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are the most common orofacial impairment, but the relevance of certain clinical features in TMD is not clear. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to analyse if temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are associated with sociodemographic (eg age, height, weight, body mass index and gender), psychological (eg anxiety and depression) and clinical features (eg use of dental splints, orthodontics, retainers, bruxism, sleep disturbance, familiar prior history of TMD and dental occlusion). METHODS: An observational study was conducted to calculate

Secondary retention of permanent molars: an assessment of ankylosis by scanning electron and light microscopy.

Secondary retention refers to the cessation of eruption of a tooth after emergence. This may be the result of pathological changes in the periodontal ligament. The aim of this study was to describe the morphological and histological aspects of the radicular surface of secondarily retained permanent molars. The roots of 12 secondarily retained molars and two control molars, were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM) in order to analyse the occurrence and localisation of ankylosis. With SEM it was observed that the root surface of retained molars showe

A five-year follow-up of a root fracture in a ten-year-old boy.

The management of horizontal root fracture still presents a challenge to clinicians. The case of a 10-year-old boy with a horizontal root fracture in the left maxillary central incisor (tooth number 21) is described here. The fracture was present at the junction of the apical and the middle thirds. We report both the emergency care and the 5-year follow-up. At the same time, an orthodontic treatment was planned for a retained maxillary cuspid (tooth number 23), first composed of a high-pull headgear and then by a fixed multi-bracket appliance. Today, the tooth number 21 remains vital and sympt

Combined Orthodontic-surgical Treatment for Skeletal Class III Malocclusion with Multiple Impacted Permanent and Supernumerary Teeth: Case Report.

In this report we describe a combined orthodontic and surgical treatment for a 14-year-old boy with severe skeletal class III deformity and dental problem. His upper posterior primary teeth in the left side were over-retained and 6 maxillary teeth (bilateral central incisors and canines, left first and second premolars) were impacted, together with 5 supernumerary teeth in both arches. The treatment protocol involved extraction of all the supernumerary and deciduous teeth, surgical exposure and orthodontic traction of the impacted teeth, a bimaxillary orthognathic approach including Lefort I o

Alkali soluble and alkali insoluble fluoride retention in demineralized enamel in vivo.

Demineralization of enamel was induced by applying orthodontic bands in 15 patients having two of their premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons. After a 4-wk caries induction period, eight patients were instructed to rinse their teeth once daily with a neutral 0.05% NaF solution, whereas seven patients received a single treatment with a neutral 2% NaF solution. The bands were reattached to the teeth during the fluoride treatment period and the teeth were extracted after two more weeks. Three consecutive enamel layers were etched off, and a significant uptake of fluoride in all three layers

Retention of teeth in the fracture gaps of the mandible: a retrospective analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Since the introduction of miniplate osteosynthesis and the use of prophylactic antibiotics, the complication rate related to the teeth in the fracture gap has significantly decreased. Currently, there are still no established guidelines for the management of such teeth in mandibular fracture lines. However, the long-term viability of these teeth within the fracture gap remains uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the survival rate of teeth located within the mandibular fracture line and evaluate related follow-up treatments over a minimum period of one year. MATERIALS

Orthodontic treatment of traumatically avulsed maxillary central incisors with bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion in an adult female: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians agree that obtaining and retaining good treatment results for missing maxillary central incisors owing to trauma is not easy. Management of adult patients with permanent maxillary central incisor loss who visit the clinic with high expectations for aesthetics and function pose a significant diagnostic dilemma. Therefore, esthetic and functional outcomes should be taken into consideration when deciding the proper treatment method. The treatment described in this study aimed to reestablish smile esthetics by proposing an effective multidisciplinary clinical approach that i

Orthodontic finishing after TMJ disk manipulation and recapture.

Orthodontic treatment has as its goal in most patients to achieve a cosmetic and functional result. There are functional goals for all orthodontic treatment and in some few cases the functional outweigh the cosmetic; an example would be a cleft-palate case. Orthodontic finishing to a specific condylar position is not routinely a goal of orthodontic care. The reason for this is that only patients who have pain, dysfunction and a negative change in quality of life from their temporomandibular apparatus need this tangential type of treatment. Research has shown that most patients suffering from a

Antibacterial Interventions for Orthodontic Appliances; Surface Modifications, Coatings and Bulk-Incorporated Antibacterial Agents: Materials, Mechanisms and Clinical Application-A Scoping Review.

Biofilm accumulation on orthodontic appliances is a recognized risk factor for white spot lesion formation and caries during treatment. Antibacterial surface modifications and coating strategies have been proposed as appliance-level preventive approaches. Studied interventions in the literature span true thin-film surface coatings, plasma-based and ion-implantation surface modifications, and bulk-incorporated antibacterial agents in appliance matrix materials. Yet the extent to which in vitro efficacy translates to clinically meaningful protection remains unresolved. This PRISMA-ScR-compliant

Regressive changes of the dental pulp complex in retained primary molars with congenitally missing successor teeth.

This study was undertaken to investigate the regressive changes occurring in the dental pulp complex (pulp, dentin, and cementum) of retained mandibular primary second molars with congenitally missing bicuspid teeth. Seventeen retained, caries free, primary molars were used. The specimens were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Fixed samples were decalcified, routinely prepared, embedded in paraffin, sectioned, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The results demonstrated a reduction in the pulp size, abnormal odontoblastic pattern, declined vascularity, pulp degeneration, pulp stones,

Periodontal-orthodontic interdisciplinary management of a "periodontally hopeless" maxillary central incisor with severe mobility: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Treating periodontally hopeless teeth with advanced bone resorption and severe tooth mobility is a great challenge for both orthodontists and periodontists. Biofilm-induced periodontal inflammation and occlusal trauma-related inflammation may synergistically aggravate tooth mobility. This case report illustrates that even periodontally hopeless teeth can be saved and have long-term stability with comprehensive periodontal treatment to control periodontal inflammation and promote periodontal bone regeneration and intricate orthodontic mechanical control to correct cross bite and occ

Relationship between initial crowding and interproximal force during retention phase.

This study investigated the change in interproximal force (IPF) in mandibular anterior teeth during retention and the relationship between the irregularity index before orthodontic treatment and the IPF. The effect that an erupting third molar had on IPF was also examined. Forty treated patients (40 with extraction of four bicuspids) were followed for 18 months during the retention phase. The irregularity index was determined from initial plaster casts. The total IPF was determined by measuring the interdental frictional forces at the mandibular anterior teeth by withdrawing a metal strip. The

Separated Surgical Instrument During the Extraction of a Third Molar: A Case Report.

Third molar extraction is among the most frequently performed procedures in oral surgery. The indications for extraction, such as dental caries, orthodontic considerations, periodontal disease, or associated pathology, vary between patients; consequently, the complications encountered can differ significantly. In this case report, we describe an uncommon complication involving the separation of a surgical bur during the extraction of a mandibular third molar. The patient underwent careful monitoring for three years, after which the retained instrument fragment was successfully retrieved under

Case report: Long-term management of occlusion after surgical-orthodontic treatment for a patient with drug-induced open bite developed after the onset of schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a major mental disorder, with an estimated incidence of 1%. Since they are sensitive to sensory changes, orthodontic treatment to move teeth should be avoided as aggressively as possible in these patients because of strong concerns about the possibility of causing adverse psychological effects, thus there are few reports on orthodontic treatment for schizophrenia patients. We report a case of severe open bite caused by medication after the onset of schizophrenia, even though the patient's occlusion had been stable for a long time after surgical orthodontic treatmen

Inflammation and mechanical force-induced bone remodeling.

Periodontitis arises from imbalanced host-microbe interactions, leading to dysbiosis and destructive inflammation. The host's innate and adaptive immune responses produce pro-inflammatory mediators that stimulate destructive events, which cause loss of alveolar bone and connective tissue attachment. There is no consensus on the factors that lead to a conversion from gingivitis to periodontitis, but one possibility is the proximity of the inflammation to the bone, which promotes bone resorption and inhibits subsequent bone formation during coupled bone formation. Conversely, orthodontic tooth m

Confocal laser scanning microscopic studies on alveolar bone remodeling with orthodontic tooth movement and retention.

Alveolar bone reconstruction in growing dog during the retention period following orthodontic tooth movement was studied. Three beagle dogs (8-10 kg body weight, about one-year-old) were used and two of the animals were subjected to histological observation. The upper 2nd and lower 3rd premolars on both sides were extracted prior to the orthodontic treatments. After a healing period of one month, the upper 3rd premolar and the lower 4th premolar on the right side were moved mesially with a conventional orthodontic force for 8 weeks, and then retained in their new position for 4 weeks.
