Replacement of missing lateral incisors for patients with cleft lip and palate: A decision-making tree based on a systematic review of the literature.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Cleft lip and palate are the most frequent congenital anomalies of the face and are often linked with lateral incisor agenesis. The therapeutic decision on whether and how to replace the lateral incisors is not straightforward, and a decision-making tree is needed. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the available literature reporting on treatments for the replacement of missing lateral incisors in cleft areas. By analyzing the success and survival rates of these treatments, a decision-making tree was developed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The liter

Non-surgical adjunctive interventions for accelerating tooth movement in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Deviation from a normal bite can be defined as malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment takes 20 months on average to correct malocclusion. Accelerating the rate of tooth movement may help to reduce the duration of orthodontic treatment and associated unwanted effects including orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR), demineralisation and reduced patient motivation and compliance. Several non-surgical adjuncts have been advocated with the aim of accelerating the rate of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM).         OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of non-surgical adjunc

Case report: idiopathic pre-eruptive coronal resorption of a maxillary permanent canine.

BACKGROUND: Coronal resorption is a coronal degeneration of enamel and dentine in which ultimately the crown is replaced by vascular connective tissue through a defect in the enamel organ of an unerupted tooth. This is also known as pre-eruptive coronal resorption. However, the aetiology of resorption remains unclear. CASE REPORT: A 13 years 7 months old Caucasian boy who attended an orthodontic consultation for anterior crossbite correction presented with idiopathic pre-eruptive coronal resorption of an erupted right maxillary permanent canine (FDI 13). Clinically, the enamel remaining on th

Orthodontic treatment of patients using bisphosphonates: a report of 2 cases.

The pharmacologic agent bisphosphonate has recently received much attention in the dental literature. Bisphosphonates in oral or intravenous forms are used to treat various diseases such as certain cancers, bone- and calcium-related disorders, osteoporosis, and osteopenia. Bisphosphonates inhibit bone turnover and result in increased bone-mineral density. The most serious dental side effect of bisphosphonate treatment (particularly when it is administered intravenously) is, paradoxically, osteonecrosis of the mandible or the maxilla represented by exposed nonhealing bone. Other related complic

Effectiveness and Efficacy of Thermoformed and 3D Printed Aligners in Correcting Malocclusion (Spacing) and Its Impact on Periodontal Oral Health and Oral Microbiome: A Double-Blinded Parallel Randomized Controlled Multicenter Clinical Trial.

Aligners are the common devices used in orthodontics for the correction of malocclusion. Various materials and techniques are employed to fabricate aligners. One of those includes thermoformed and 3D aligners. These aligners can be worn for several days, and their impact on periodontal health is not known. Therefore, the aim of our protocol is to determine the effectiveness of these aligners in correcting malocclusion and their impact on periodontal health and oral microbiome. A double-blinded randomized controlled clinical trial with a total of n = 60 patients will be included with n = 30 in

Labial Frenectomy Using Conventional Scalpel Technique: A Case Report.

Frenum morphology is of pivotal concern while treating patients who desire improved aesthetics and for treating patients with midline diastemas, as it may lead to failure or relapse of orthodontic treatment. Frenum, a thick band of muscle fiber, may present with abnormalities in the shape, size, form, number, and thickness, which may cause gingival recession along with poor oral health. Frenectomy is adopted as the plan of action while treating abnormal frenum cases by resecting the frenum attachment to provide closure of the spacing between the upper anterior teeth, as in the case of midline

Orthodontic movement of teeth with short root anomaly: Should it be avoided, faced or ignored?

INTRODUCTION: Short Root Anomaly (SRA) is an uncommon disease and a challenge for orthodontic treatment as it tends to increase the risk of root resorption. OBJECTIVE: Assess the current status of the diagnosis, etiology and orthodontic management of teeth with SRA, and present case reports. METHODS: A literature review was carried out in PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, Scopus and Web of Science databases. RESULTS: A differential diagnosis of SRA should be conducted for teeth with incomplete root formation, external apical root resorption, dentin dysplasia type I and post dental trauma root hypopla

Orthodontic treatment planning in cleft and craniofacial patients with clear aligners: burden of care and informed consent.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic treatment in cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies is complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach. There are often multiple possible treatment plans. To properly explain and discuss the various options, such as management of frequently missing incisors or the choice between orthognathic surgery and dental compensation, assessment of burden of treatment must be made and adequately communicated to the patients and families. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 105 patients affected by cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies were retrospectively collected and d

Biomechanical model registration for monitoring and simulating large orthodontic tooth movements in the maxilla and mandible.

PURPOSE: Superimposition of digital dental-arch models allows quantification of orthodontic tooth movements (OTM). Currently, this procedure requires stable reference surfaces usually only present in the maxilla. This study aimed to investigate the accuracy of a novel superimposition approach based on biomechanical principles of OTM and the equilibrium of forces and moments (EFM)-applicable in both jaws-for monitoring and simulating large OTM. METHODS: The study included 7 patients who had undergone extraction of the first (PM1-Ex) or second (PM2-Ex) premolar in each quadrant. Digital models

Camouflage treatment of severe bialveolar protrusion in skeletal Class II using miniscrew anchorage.

The aim of this case report was to demonstrate the efficient use of miniscrew as anchorage in a 12-year-old male patient with skeletal and dental Class II and severe biprotrusion and lips procumbency. It was proposed a compensating orthodontic treatment with 4 premolar extraction and maximum anchorage. Since the patient abandoned treatment after one premolar extraction, loss of anchorage occurred and treatment plan was modified to maximize lower retraction with miniscrew anchorage and distalization of the upper arch using two methods: Class II elastics from lower miniscrews to the sliding jig

Surgery Versus Nonsurgery Option for Scissors Bite Treatment.

BACKGROUND: This article compared the use of temporary skeletal anchorage devices (TSADs) and orthognathic surgery for scissors bite correction. METHODS: To correct the scissors bite without orthognathic surgery, a cross-type titanium miniplate was placed with 3 miniscrews (1.5 mm in diameter and 5 mm in length) in the midpalatal area, without a surgical incision and under local anesthesia. In addition, a 1 miniscrew was placed on the buccal alveolar bone to avoid molar extrusion during uprighting. In the surgical case, a 3-piece Le Fort osteotomy was performed to decrease maxillary arch widt
