IDEAS for a healthy baby--reducing disparities in use of publicly reported quality data: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Publicly reported performance on quality measures is intended to enable patients to make more informed choices. Despite the growing availability of these reports, patients' use remains limited and disparities exist. Low health literacy and numeracy are two barriers that may contribute to these disparities. Patient navigators have helped patients overcome barriers such as these in other areas, such as cancer care and may prove useful for overcoming barriers to using publicly reported quality data. METHODS/DESIGN: The goals of this study are: to determine the efficacy of a patient n

Patients' expectations of information provided at cancer hospitals in Japan.

In order to survey patients' views on disease and treatment information that should be provided at hospitals, an anonymous self-administered questionnaire was distributed to patients at Aichi Cancer Center Hospital in 1995. All eligible first-visit outpatients (97 persons), randomly selected revisit outpatients (99 persons; about one in ten refused), and all except six eligible inpatients in good condition at discharge (97 persons) responded. Out of 293 patients (115 males, 174 females and 4 unspecified), 74% answered that they wanted to be informed of their diagnosis irrespective of circumsta

Development, validation, and pilot testing of the physical activity promotion program booklet for women with gestational diabetes mellitus.

Physical Activity (PA) promotion is an essential component of the comprehensive management of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Even though the literature is available regarding the importance of PA, limited access to reliable sources of information hinders involvement in recommended PA during pregnancy. The present study aims to develop, validate, and pilot test the Physical Activity Promotion Program (PAPP) booklet for women with GDM. The booklet was developed based on the previous literature, validated by seven experts, and administered to 38 participants for 8 weeks. The level of PA was

The impact of an eye drop booklet on distress in children when receiving eye drops.

PURPOSE: Child- and family-centered care is an increasingly important area in healthcare. Up to now, little attention has been paid to the experience of children and their parents in ophthalmological healthcare. During their conversations at Bartiméus, children indicated that the administration of eye drops constituted the most stressful element that needed to be improved. This study describes the amount of distress experienced by children when receiving eye drops. Furthermore, it investigates the value and impact of the developed eye drop booklet, for children and parents. METHODS: In this m

Leaflets and continual educational offerings led to increased coverage rate of newborn hearing screening in Akita.

OBJECTIVE: Newborn hearing screening (NHS) has been actively performed in Japan since 2001. The NHS coverage rate has increased each year in Akita Prefecture. We analyzed the details of the NHS program and how the Akita leaflets and the many educational offerings about the importance of NHS led to the high NHS coverage rate. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in liveborn newborns in hospitals and in clinics where hearing screening was performed from the program's beginning in 2001 through the end of 2015. We describe the chronological history of NHS. The outcome data of NHS were col

Relapse-Prevention Booklets as an Adjunct to a Tobacco Quitline: A Randomized Controlled Effectiveness Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Relapse prevention (RP) remains a major challenge to smoking cessation. Previous research found that a set of self-help RP booklets significantly reduced smoking relapse. This study tested the effectiveness of RP booklets when added to the existing services of a telephone quitline. METHODS: Quitline callers (N = 3458) were enrolled after their 2-week quitline follow-up call and randomized to one of three interventions: (1) Usual Care: standard intervention provided by the quitline, including brief counseling and nicotine replacement therapy; (2) Repeated Mailings (RM): eight For

Acceptability of a 'guidebook' for the management of Osteoarthritis: a qualitative study of patient and clinician's perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Written information can be of benefit to both practitioners and patients and the provision of quality information is emphasised as a core intervention by United Kingdom National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) OA guidelines. Researchers, patients and HCPs developed an 'OA guidebook' to provide; a) a balanced source of information for patients; b) a resource to aid practitioners when discussing self-management. This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability and usefulness of the OA guidebook as part of complex intervention to deliver NICE OA guidelines in General Practice.

[School refusal and dropping out of school: positioning regarding a Swiss perspective].

This article deals with refusal to attend school and dropping out of school from the point of view of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychology, in German speaking countries and from the perspective of Swiss schools and their administrative bodies. General epidemiological data on refusal to attend school show that approximately 5% of children and adolescents are likely to try to avoid attending school at some point. There is very little data available on the frequency of school drop-out. In the past two years (2011 and 2012), approximately 2% of all patients seen for the first time at the

Clinical outcomes of a new self-help booklet for premature ejaculation.

INTRODUCTION: Premature ejaculation (PE) is quite common. Although effective treatments do exist, only a few affected people consult a practitioner in order to overcome their problem. At the same time, studies have shown that reading didactical documents about their PE problem (bibliotherapy) can be useful to men. AIM: The aim of this study was to improve the bibliotherapy approach using up-to-date knowledge and techniques. The expected benefits were the following: (i) an effective manual shorter than previous ones; (ii) easier to assimilate therapeutic principles; and (iii) a method thereby

Neurosurgical input at pre-natal counselling for parents of babies with Spina bifida.

Prenatal counselling can be helpful to parents in making a decision with regard to continuation of the pregnancy or to help prepare for the birth and the future life of a child with Spina bifida. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of our specialist neuro counselling sessions and to highlight areas that could be improved upon. This was in the form of a questionnaire given to parents, who had been through the counselling and continued with their pregnancy. The areas highlighted for improvement were more explicit information about urinary catheterisation, the need for admission to the special c

Study of the effects of education on the management of urine drainage systems by patients and carers.

A randomized controlled trial was undertaken to test the effects of an education programme, which included an information booklet and demonstration, on the management of urine drainage systems by patients and carers. A total of 45 patients, new and established users, were included. Data were collected at pretest, test and follow-up visits. The education programme was found to improve significantly the performance of handwashing after bag emptying and before and after bag changing, although this effect did not persist over time. The findings are discussed with a number of conclusions drawn and

Is there a difference in sample adequacy when vaginal HPV DNA samples are self-collected at home, a health post, or a primary care health center in rural Ethiopia? Implications for community cervical cancer screening.

BACKGROUND: Self-collection of HPV DNA samples is recommended as a cervical cancer screening method in areas with high barriers to clinical examination, such as Ethiopia. Self-collected sample adequacy in clinical settings is high compared to clinician collection, but less is known about self-collected sample adequacy in community settings. We evaluated sample adequacy differences when samples were taken at women’s homes, a local health post, or a primary care health center in rural Ethiopia. METHODS: Women either self-collected vaginal samples for HPV DNA at home (Arm 1, n = 100), at a health

Development and validation of an interprofessional collaborative educational module on the self-management of foot for individuals with type II diabetes mellitus in India.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient awareness of foot self-care among diabetic individuals results in diabetic foot ulcers especially in the Indian population considering its varied ethnicity and lifestyle practices. The management of diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers therefore demands a well-coordinated approach that involves multiple healthcare providers (HCPs). The present study aims to develop and validate an interprofessional collaborative (IPC) educational program involving HCPs to efficiently oversee and instruct the public on appropriate strategies for self-managing diabetic foot health in the In
