Cytological findings of NK/T-cell lymphoma in pericardial effusion: A case report with a review of the literature.

Extranodal Natural Killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKL) is an aggressive NK or cytotoxic T-cell neoplasm. The cytological features of NK/T-cell lymphoma have been rarely described, mainly focusing on the fine needle aspiration cytology from lymph nodes or soft tissue, except for a few cases focused on body fluid. A 46-year-old man visited the hospital due to generalized weakness and weight loss. Three months prior, computed tomographic scan revealed mesenteric panniculitis and reactive lymph nodal enlargement, as well as a mildly thickened left adrenal gland, suggesting an inflammatory condition. mTORC1 inhibition with rapamycin exacerbates adipose tissue inflammation in obese mice and dissociates macrophage phenotype from function.

Genetic- and diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance are associated with an increase in mechanistic target of rapamycin complex (mTORC) 1 activity in adipose tissue. We investigated herein the effects of pharmacological mTORC1 inhibition in the development of adipose tissue inflammation induced by high-fat diet (HFD) feeding, as well as in the polarization, metabolism and function of bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDM). For this, C57BL/6J mice fed with a standard chow diet or a HFD (60% of calories from fat) and treated with either vehicle (0.1% Me2SO, 0.2% methylcellulose) or rapamycin

Limited systemic sclerosis initially presenting with mesenteric panniculitis.

Mesenteric panniculitis pertains to a group of uncommon disorders named sclerosing mesenteritis that present with different levels of inflammation and fibrosis of the small bowel mesentery. It is associated with abdominal surgeries, trauma, malignancies, infections and connective tissue diseases. To the best of our knowledge, no cases of sclerosing mesenteritis have been reported in patients with systemic sclerosis. We present a case of a 61-year-old woman who had incidental CT findings of mesenteric panniculitis. Diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy that showed fat necrosis. On further review sh

Sclerosing mesenteritis: clinical features, treatment, and outcome in ninety-two patients.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare non-neoplastic disease that affects the small bowel mesentery with chronic fibrosing inflammation. There are few data on the natural history and therapeutic options for this condition. METHODS: We performed a retrospective and prospective study to describe the clinical characteristics, therapy, and outcome of all cases of sclerosing mesenteritis diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, from 1982-2005. RESULTS: Ninety-two cases were identified; 70% were male, with a median age of 65 years (interquartile range, 55-72). Common presenting symp

Nonvascular mesenteric disease: utility of multidetector CT with 3D volume rendering.

Creation of isotropic volumes with submillimeter multidetector computed tomography (CT) has expanded interpretative practice to routinely include two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) postprocessing techniques. Currently, 2D multiplanar reformatting, maximum intensity projection, and 3D volume rendering are available on most workstations. Only volume rendering yields a 3D display that depicts all tissue types from any orientation. Utility is not limited to vascular applications, as 3D volume rendering can be used to evaluate neoplastic, infectious, and inflammatory processes that aff

True lambdoid craniosynostosis: long-term results of surgical and conservative therapy.

BACKGROUND: True lambdoid synostosis is a rare malformation. Few clinical reports have examined the efficacy of conservative or surgical management in the care of these patients. METHODS: All patients with a diagnosis of true lambdoid synostosis treated by the senior author (S.P.B.) at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia between 1990 and 2005 were included in the study. Both qualitative and quantitative assessments of craniofacial growth were performed following either conservative or surgical management. Qualitative assessments were made based on preoperative and postoperative photograph

Outcome of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients 80 years and older.

Advanced age is associated with an increase in postoperative complications. This study assesses the indications and outcome for laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in patients aged 80 years or older. Consecutive, unselected patients aged 80 years or over undergoing LC between 1991 and 2000 were included. A retrospective case review enabled analysis of clinical and operative factors together with in-hospital morbidity, 30-day mortality, and duration of hospital stay. A series of 117 patients, 79 women and 38 men with a median age of 83 years (range 80-93 years), underwent LC. Indications for LC w

[High Frequency of Mesenteric Panniculitis in Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and Prostate Cancer: Study in 1,500 Oncologic Patients Undergoing Staging].

UNLABELLED: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is an uncommon, benign, condition that involves the mesenteric root. It may be idiopathic, or be associated with an inflammatory or malignant neoplasm. AIM: To establish the frequency of MP in oncologic patients according to the type of cancer. METHOD: Images of PET/CT performed between January 2008 and December 2019 on recently diagnosed oncologic patients were reviewed searching for MP. MP was defined as increased density and volume of mesenteric root fat, associated with nodules and/or lymph nodes, with or without pseudocapsule. Patients who had re

Sclerosing Mesenteritis Mimicking IgG4-related Disease.

A 72-year-old man was followed as an outpatient at our hospital for 6 years after surgery for small cell carcinoma of left adrenal gland origin. Follow-up abdominal computed tomography showed a 6-cm mass in the left lower mesentery. The patient underwent open laparotomy. The histological diagnosis was sclerosing mesenteritis. The previous specimens of the left adrenal mass were then re-examined with a microscope, and panniculitis was found around the small cell carcinoma. Both lesions were histologically similar to IgG4-related disease (RD), but they did not completely meet the diagnostic crit

[An analysis of clinical characteristics of twelve cases of mesenteric panniculitis].

Objective: Mesenteric panniculitis is an idiopathic, uncommon disease involving the adipose tissue of mesentery. The etiology, diagnosis and treatment are still unnoticed. We thus reported a case series to improve the understanding of this rare disorder. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 12 patients with mesenteric panniculitis including manifestation, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Results: We found a male predominance (M∶F 3∶1) with the median age of 58 years old at diagnosis. The most common symptom was abdominal pain (9/12), followed by abdominal distension (3/

IgG4-related sclerosing mesenteritis: a rare mesenteric disease of unknown etiology.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare inflammatory and fibrosing disorder of unknown etiology, while IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) consists of mass-forming, fibroinflammatory lesions characterized by high serum IgG4 levels and tissue infiltration of many IgG4-positive plasma cells; obliterative phlebitis is common. This report describes a case of sclerosing mesenteritis that was considered a manifestation of IgG4-RD. A 53-year-old man underwent right hemicolectomy because of an ileocecal mass that did not improve with conservative therapy. The ill-defined fibroinflammatory lesion extended in the

[A case of IgG4-related sclerosing mesenteritis associated with Crohn's disease].

Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM) is a rare disease characterized by chronic nonspecific mesenteric inflammation and fibrosis of unknown etiology. Some tumefactive SM shows diffuse accumulation of IgG4-positive plasma cells and is considered as a part of the spectrum of IgG4-related disease. An association between inflammatory bowel disease and IgG4-related disease has been indicated. A 45-year-old woman visited our hospital due to weight loss with intermittent lower abdominal discomfort. Pelvic ultrasound revealed a mass-like lesion in the abdominal wall and pelvis MRI demonstrated a 5.9 cm sized

Intestinal, adipose, and liver inflammation in diet-induced obese mice.

Chronic inflammation and increased visceral adipose tissue (VAT) are key elements of the metabolic syndrome. Both are considered to play a pathogenic role in the development of liver steatosis and insulin resistance. The aim of the present study was to investigate the hypothesis that an inflamed intestine, induced both by diet and chemical irritation, could induce persistent inflammation in VAT. Female C57BL/6JOlaHsd mice were used. In study I, groups of mice (n = 6 per group) were given an obesity-inducing cafeteria diet (diet-induced obesity) or regular chow only (control) for 14 weeks.
