Multilocus phylogenetic analysis and morphological data reveal a new species composition of the genus Drepanocephalus Dietz, 1909 (Digenea: Echinostomatidae), parasites of fish-eating birds in the Americas.

Members of the genus Drepanocephalus are endoparasites of fish-eating birds of the families Phalacrocoracidae and Sulidae distributed across the Americas. Currently, Drepanocephalus contains three species, i.e. D. spathans (type species), D. olivaceus and D. auritus. Two additional species, D. parvicephalus and D. mexicanus were transferred to the genus Petasiger. In the current study, available DNA sequences of D. spathans, D. auritus and Drepanocephalus sp., were aligned with newly generated sequences of D. spathans and Petasiger mexicanus. Phylogenetic analyses inferred with three nuclear (

Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Latin America.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. Poverty, socioeconomic factors, and malnutrition influence the incidence and outcome of CAP in LAC. In LAC, Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most frequent microorganism responsible for CAP, (incidence: 24-78%); the incidence of atypical microorganisms is similar to other regions of the world. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a growing problem in the LAC region, with the Caribbean being the second most affected a

[Demodex spp in chronic blepharitis patients].

BACKGROUND: Blepharitis is a very common disease in the ophthalmologic practice generally taking a chronic course with intermittent exacerbations. Several studies have linked the presence of Demodex folliculorum with chronic blepharitis, since the mite has the capacity to perpetuate the follicular inflammatory process. The prevalence of infection by Demodex spp. is variable depending on the population. In Paraguay, information on the frequency of the infestation in patients with chronic blepharitis is not available. AIM: To determine the frequency of Demodex spp, and the ocular microbiota in

Extended spectrum β-lactamase producers among nosocomial Enterobacteriaceae in Latin America.

To review the epidemiology of nosocomial extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Latin America, a systematic search of the biomedical literature (PubMed) was performed for articles published since 2005. Rates of nosocomial infections caused by extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Latin America have increased since 2005. Up to 32% of Escherichia coli and up to 58% of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates are extended spectrum β-lactamase-positive, rates that are higher than in other world regions. From a region-wide perspective, 11-25% of E. coli isolates

Screening for Chagas' disease in HIV-positive immigrants from endemic areas.

Chagas' disease is an opportunistic infection in the setting of HIV/AIDS. The arrival of HIV-positive immigrants from endemic areas to non-endemic countries makes possible the detection of Chagas' disease in this group of patients. We describe the results of a screening programme conducted in the HIV-positive immigrant population arriving from endemic areas who attended the Tropical Medicine Unit of Hospital Universitario Central of Asturias during 2008. We determined anti-T. cruzi antibodies in all HIV patients arriving from endemic areas who were followed up. The ID-Chagas antibody test was

Endemic pemphigus over a century: Part II.

BACKGROUND: Endemic pemphigus foliaceus (EPF) is an autoimmune disease, classically occurring in a restricted geographic area. Foci of EPF have been described in several Central and South American countries, often affecting young people and Amerindians, with some female predilection. Although most American EPF cases have been documented in Brazil, cases have been reported in Peru, Paraguay, El Salvador and Venezuela. An additional variant of EPF has been described in El Bagre, Colombia, (El Bagre-EPF) affecting older men and a few post-menopausal females. Finally, one additional type of EPF ha

Perspectives on rapid elimination and ultimate global eradication of paralytic poliomyelitis caused by polioviruses.

Poliomyelitis caused by polioviruses has already been eradicated from industrialized countries of North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania, but the procedures by which this eradication was achieved are not adequate for the poor tropical and subtropical countries. The major challenge now is first to eliminate it rapidly from Asia and Africa where an estimated 250,000 cases and 25,000 deaths currently occur annually. The great progress toward eradication of "wild" polioviruses from poor tropical and subtropical countries in Latin America was achieved not by the procedures still recommended by the

Dietary assessment tools for children and adolescents in Latin America: a scoping review.

Accurately assessing dietary intake in children and adolescents is essential for understanding dietary patterns and informing public health strategies. In Latin America, rapid nutrition transitions and increasing childhood obesity highlight the need for culturally appropriate, validated dietary assessment tools (DATs). However, methodological challenges and limited regional data hinder effective dietary surveillance. This scoping review identified and characterised DATs used among children and adolescents (5-18 years) in Latin America, examining tool types, features, validation and regional co

Reframing West Nile Virus in Latin America: From Enzootic Evidence to Human Risk-Surveillance Gaps and One Health Actions.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus with one of the widest global distributions. Since its discovery in Uganda in 1937, it has become a major zoonotic pathogen, and after its introduction into the United States in 1999, it spread rapidly across the Americas, becoming the leading cause of neuroinvasive arboviral disease. Its expansion illustrates a remarkable ecological adaptability, further intensified by climate change. In Latin America and the Caribbean, WNV circulation has been consistently documented in birds, horses, and mosquitoes; however, confirmed human cases remain d
