Diversified social cognition in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: In an integrated model of social cognition (SC), the theory of mind (ToM), the recognition of behavior in social situations (RBSS), empathy, and sensitivity to moral and conventional rules (SMCR) cooperate in generating mental representations of the interpersonal relationships. The aim of this study was to extend our knowledge of the SC of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients by characterizing its various aspects and predictors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty adult patients with TLE and 50 healthy controls were assessed using ToM, RBSS and SMCR neuropsychological tests, the Empathy

Effect of dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) haplotypes on general psychopathology in patients with eating disorders.

Among the many candidate genes analyzed in eating disorder (ED) patients, those involved in dopaminergic functions may be of special relevance, as dopamine is known to play a significant role in feeding behavior, the distortion of body image, hyperactivity and reward and reinforcement processes. We aimed to determine the effect of functional polymorphisms and haplotypes in the Dopamine Receptor D4 (DRD4) gene on general psychopathological symptoms in ED patients. Two-hundred-and-seventy-three ED patients [199 with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and 74 with Bulimia Nervosa (BN)] completed the SCL-90R in

Cognitive impairment and reduced life span of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy homozygotes.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the evolution and life expectancy in patients with oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) who are homozygotes for two (GCN)13 expansions in the PABPN1 encoding gene. BACKGROUND: OPMD is particularly frequent among French Canadians (FCs) and Uzbek Jews (UJs), who carry a same size, (GCN)13, PABPN1 mutation. The high rate of consanguinity among UJs together with late disease onset and normal fertility results in homozygous cases. METHODS: For 15 to 20 years, we followed 4 FC and 6 UJ homozygotes with OPMD and compared them with their heterozygous parents and siblings. I

Evaluation of factors influencing medication compliance in inpatient treatment of psychotic disorders.

RATIONALE: Short- and long-term compliance to prescribed antipsychotic drugs is of particular concern in regard to medication choice and treatment outcome in the care of psychotic disorders. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated patient-related and treatment-related factors associated with medication compliance in inpatients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or other psychotic disorder. METHODS: Within a naturalistic study in seven psychiatric hospitals, individuals with a psychotic disorder were assessed weekly on mental state, social functioning, side effects, and medication c

Predictors of suicidal ideation in people with epilepsy living in Korea.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The risk of suicide or suicide attempts is reported higher in people with epilepsy (PWE) than in the general population. Although epileptic, psychiatric, and psychosocial factors are known risk factors for suicide or suicide attempt, no studies have evaluated the predictors of the severity of suicidal ideation-which is a warning sign for suicide attempts-in PWE. Therefore, we measured the severity of suicidal ideation and its risk factors. METHODS: Consecutive PWE who were medicated with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and attended epilepsy clinic were included in the study

Delusional disorder and schizophrenia: a comparison of the neurocognitive and clinical characteristics in first-episode patients.

BACKGROUND: Delusional disorder (DD) is thought to be distinct from schizophrenia (SZ). However, few systematic investigations have been conducted on DD because of the difficulty in ascertaining a representative sample size. Existing knowledge has been mostly generated from inpatient cohorts, which may be biased towards a more severe sample. METHOD: We compared the demographic, clinical and cognitive differences between 71 patients with first-episode DD and 71 age-matched patients with first-episode SZ. Participants were consecutively recruited from a population-based territory-wide study of

A developmental approach to violence, hostile attributions, and paranoid thinking in adolescence.

Research within the area of paranoid thinking has focused primarily on adults and has only recently looked at the effects during the critical life stage of adolescence, with even less research in the context of the juvenile justice system. This article aims to explore the relationship between antisocial behaviour in adolescence and the development of paranoid thinking, set within wider contexts that surround the juvenile justice system. The information presented is drawn from both the current research and the clinical experiences of those working in adolescent forensic psychiatry services. The

Depression in paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenic patients compared with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Depression occurring in schizophrenia is a common problem; however, investigators have typically not studied it with the paranoid/nonparanoid dichotomy in mind. This study examines the quality as well as the severity of depression in three psychiatric groups: paranoid schizophrenia patients, nonparanoid schizophrenia patients, and nonpsychotic major depression patients. METHOD: Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected on 27 paranoid and 27 nonparanoid schizophrenia patients during their postpsychotic phase while they were at least mildly depressed, and a comparison group

Stalking: false claims of victimisation.

BACKGROUND: False allegations of victimisation although uncommon are important to recognise. This paper examines those who falsely claim to have been the victims of stalking. AIMS: To highlight the phenomenon of false victims of stalking. METHOD: Twelve individuals who falsely claimed to be victims of stalking were compared with a group of 100 true stalking victims. RESULTS: False stalking victims presented for help earlier than real victims and were less likely to claim harassment via letters. They reported equivalent levels of violence directed at themselves but seldom claimed others were

Successful behavioral treatment of polydipsia in a schizophrenic patient.

Behavioral treatment of a 35 year old female with chronic schizophrenia and water intoxication with seizures was conducted on an inpatient psychiatric unit. Treatment included frequent daily weights, restricted fluid intake, positive reinforcement for program compliance, and time-out from reinforcement following significant weight gain or other specified program violations. The final 6 months of the 30 month treatment program were a maintenance phase during which most contingencies were faded and all fluid restrictions were removed. There was no reported recurrence of polydipsia after 18 month

[2 approaches to experimental psychology studies in psychopathies].

The paper deals with some results of experimental psychological studies of psychopathic personalities, which indicate the efficacy of using not only experimental data for verifying the existing clinical concepts. Such studies are important as well for formulating some psychological hypotheses, the solution of certain questions on the basis of the known personality theories in psychology. The possibility of using psychological examinations for the study of motivations in psychopathies are discussed. For the 4 forms of psychopathy (explosive, hysterical, inhibited, paranoidal) the prevalent moti

Cognitive and behavioral effects of lamotrigine and carbamazepine monotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed or untreated partial epilepsy.

PURPOSE: In this prospective study, we compared the long-term cognitive and behavioral effects of lamotrigine (LTG) and carbamazepine (CBZ) in patients with newly diagnosed or untreated partial epilepsy. METHODS: This was a multicenter, open-label, randomized study that compared monotherapy with LTG and CBZ in newly diagnosed or untreated patients with partial epilepsy. We employed an 8-week titration period and a 40-week maintenance period. Neuropsychological tests, Symptom Check List-90, and QOLIE-31 were assessed at baseline, 16 weeks, and 48 weeks after drug treatment. A group-by-time int

Predictors and mediators of trait anger across the psychosis continuum: The role of attachment style, paranoia and social cognition.

Anger in the context of psychosis has a significant impact on treatment outcomes and serious implications for risk management. Understanding mechanisms underlying anger will improve interventions and inform strategies for prevention. This study is the first to examine the relationships between anger and key theoretical drivers across different phases of the psychosis continuum. A battery including measures of theory of mind, attachment, hostile attribution bias, paranoia and anger was administered to 174 participants (14 ultra-high risk, 20 first-episode, 20 established psychosis, 120 non-clin

Linguistic dimensions of affect and thought in somatization disorder.

DSM-III has established diagnostic criteria that separate somatization disorder from other overlapping symptom configurations. Nevertheless, information regarding the experience of somatization disorder is far from complete. Terms such as "masked depression" or "alexithymia" imply that a disturbance of affect is a central but guarded issue for at least some somatizing patients. Through content analysis of speech, the authors investigated the self-experience of somatization disorder in relation to affective disorder. Rather than defended depression, a distinctive characteristic found in the lan

A male MZ twin pair, concordant for transsexualism, discordant for schizophrenia.

A pair of male monozygous twins of gynandromorphic habitus but normal male body hair and genitalia, who appear concordant for transsexualism and explosive personality disorder but discordant for schizophrenia, is presented. No evidence of specific family dynamic factors, imitative learning or folie a deux was found in the twins' history. A constitutional aetiology of their transsexualism and one twin's schizophrenia is suggested. The relationship between transsexualism and schizophrenia is briefly reviewed. No evidence can be found that the modal transsexual is suffering from a schizophrenic d

Reversible Splenial Lesion Syndrome Due to Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis Manifesting as Delusional Disorder: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Reversible splenial lesion syndrome (RESLES) is a transient neuroimaging finding associated with various etiologies. Although RESLES has been reported in diverse conditions, including medications, metabolic disorders, and infections, its occurrence in autoimmune encephalitis, such as anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis, is rarely described. This report details a rare case demonstrating this association. A 24-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of progressive behavioral changes, which culminated in paranoid delusions and catatonic symptoms. The initial diagnosis

Responsiveness of hypochondriacal patients with chronic low-back pain to cognitive-behavioral therapy.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has suggested that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective in reducing hypochondriacal symptoms, and another line of evidence has suggested that CBT is also effective in reducing pain and the psychological conditions associated with chronic low-back pain (CLBP). The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of CBT among hypochondriacal patients with and without CLBP. METHODS: A total of 182 hypochondriacal patients were randomly assigned to a CBT or control group. The Somatic Symptom Inventory was used to define CLBP, and the Symptom Checklist 90R (SC

Cognitive and emotional differences between abusive and non-abusive fathers.

OBJECTIVE: Abusive fathers perpetrate a substantial portion of child physical abuse. Despite this, little is known about how they differ from non-abusive fathers. This study compared a broad range of cognitive and affective factors between physically abusive and non-abusive fathers. METHODS: Abusive (n=24) and non-abusive (n=25) fathers completed standard measures assessing their experience and expression of anger, mental health, parenting stress, and their empathy and perceptions of children's socio-emotional signals. RESULTS: Abusive fathers differed from comparisons on almost all construc
