The past, present, and future of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder work in Newfoundland and Labrador: A landscape paper for change.

OBJECTIVES: In this paper, we provide an overview of best practices in FASD prevention, diagnostic, and interventions and supports. In Canada, people diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) represent a fraction people living with FASD. While social stigma may deter people from seeking an FASD diagnosis, other deterrents include the lack of screening and diagnostic referrals, cost of travelling to a clinic, and lack of clarity of how a diagnosis may improve supports and services. Preventing FASD and improving lifelong outcomes for people living with FASD requires a coordinated app

Person-centred care - radiographers' perceptions of the framework and its performance in radiography. A phenomenographic study.

INTRODUCTION: Person-centred care is being implemented in healthcare to facilitate co-created care and patients' participation in their own care. This is a new practice, also among radiographers. The aim of the study was to explore radiographers' perceptions of the framework of person-centred care and its performance in radiography. METHODS: Phenomenography was the study design. Focus group discussions and interviews were performed within a period of three months with a group of five radiographers in clinical practice. The discussions were part of a training programme on the theory and practi

Patient, public and practitioner partnership within imaging and radiotherapy: An exploration of the implementation and use of the college of radiographers guiding principles.

INTRODUCTION: In 2014 the National Health Service (NHS) in England released the Five Year Forward plan1, envisioning a shift in power from health professionals to patients and the public. In response the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) produced the "Patient, Public and Practitioner Partnership within Imaging and Radiotherapy: Guiding Principles" (P4) document which was implemented within four domains of radiography practice; service delivery, service development, education and research2. This project explored how these guidelines were implemented; and whether improvement to the qua

A Model for Nurse-Managed Health Clinics: Expanding Access to Care for the Underserved.

Homelessness remains a pressing global issue affecting people of all ages. In the United States, the problem intensified in 2023, magnified by the pandemic, which has brought greater visibility to this crisis in urban settings. The health implications for those experiencing homelessness are severe, including higher rates of chronic illnesses and premature death due to lack of access to care. Key factors contributing to these health disparities include significant barriers to accessing health services, particularly primary care and preventive services. Nurse-managed Health Clinics (NMHCs) have

Protocol for a community-engaged mixed-methods study for climate-related disaster preparedness and health care resilience in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Climate change-induced disasters pose an enormous risk to human health. With the risk of climate change disasters at an all-time high, it is imperative to strengthen the resilience of health and community systems. Working with community collaborators who provide services across the spectrum of the disaster cycle will make disaster preparedness plans context-specific, sustainable, and accepted by the community. Using evidence-based Implementation Science approaches can facilitate the development and evaluation of community-academic partnership initiatives to build responsive and res

The Radical Welcome Engagement Restoration Model and Assessment Tool for Community-Engaged Partnerships.

People experiencing addiction, houselessness, or who have a history of incarceration have worse health outcomes compared with the general population. This is due, in part, to practices and policies of historically White institutions that exclude the voices, perspectives, and contributions of communities of color in leadership, socio-economic development, and decision-making that matters for their wellbeing. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches hold promise for addressing health inequities. However, full engagement of people harmed by systemic injustices in CBPR partnerships

Empowering Schools to Implement Effective Research-Based Reading Remediation Delivers Long-Lasting Improvements to Children's Reading Trajectories.

There is a wide gap between what research evidence identifies as effective reading intervention and what is currently offered in schools. This effectiveness study reports the results of a long-term research/school system partnership that is implementing reading intervention for children with reading difficulties in Canadian community schools. In Study 1, growth-curve analyses revealed significant long-term shifts in the reading trajectories of children (n = 731) from Kindergarten to Grade 5 as a function of receiving the Empower™ Reading: Decoding and Spelling intervention. Long-term outcomes

Grow well/Crecer bien: a protocol for research on infant feeding practices in low-income families.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity among children remains high. Given obesity's significant lifelong consequences, there is great interest in preventing obesity early in life. There is a need to better understand the relation of common infant feeding styles and practices to obesity in infants using longitudinal study designs. There is also an urgent need to understand the role of caregivers other than mothers in feeding. A better understanding of variation in feeding styles and practices can inform the identification of risk groups and the tailoring of interventions to them. METHODS: In pa

Health and homelessness: weaving a net of care as a specialist practitioner.

Reflective practice was used as a process of self-inquiry and transformation in a PhD study of my specialist role in single and family homelessness. New to homelessness when I embarked on the study, there was little to guide my nursing practice and, notably, there was insufficient research evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of specialist practice with homeless people. Through my reflexive narrative study, that research gap was addressed. The aim of the narrative was to inform the reader of the reflexive journey and my transformation as a specialist practitioner in homeless health care,

Shared decision making in sarcopenia treatment.

The implementation of shared decision making (SDM) in management of sarcopenia is still in its nascent stage, especially compared to other areas of medical research. Accumulating evidence has highlighted the importance of SDM in older adults care. The current study overviews general SDM practices and explores the potential advantages and dilemmas of incorporating these concepts into sarcopenia management. We present common patient decision aids available for sarcopenia management and propose future research directions. SDM can be effectively integrated into daily practice with the aid of struc

Do healthcare professionals and young adults know about the National Chlamydia Screening Programme? Findings from two cross-sectional surveys.

The extent to which healthcare professionals (HCPs) and young people (YP) are aware of, and adhere to, National Chlamydia Screening Programme (NCSP) recommendations on testing frequency is unclear. To address this two cross-sectional surveys in 2015-2016: one among genitourinary medicine (GUM) and non-GUM HCPs (n = 109) and the other among YP attending a GUM clinic in England (n = 195). For both, questions were designed to measure awareness of NCSP guidance and whether respondents acted on that knowledge. This included questions about YP's most recent test(s) (if ever) and the time since first
