The enhancement of neuronal responses in many visual areas while animals perform spatial attention tasks has widely been thought to be the neural correlate of visual attention, but it is unclear whether the presence or absence of this modulation contributes to our striking inability to notice changes in change blindness examples. We asked whether neuronal responses in visual area V4 and the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) in posterior parietal cortex could explain the limited ability of subjects to attend multiple items in a display. We trained animals to perform a change detection task in wh

Animals including humans are endowed with a remarkable capacity to estimate rapidly the number of items in a scene. Some have questioned whether this ability reflects a genuine sense of number, or whether numerosity is derived indirectly from other covarying attributes, such as density and area. In previous work we have demonstrated that adult observers are more sensitive to changes in numerosity than to area or density, particularly changes that leave numerosity constant, pointing to a spontaneous sensitivity to numerosity, not attributable to area and density. Here we extend this line of res

An established conceptualization of visual cortical function is one in which ventral regions mediate object perception while dorsal regions support spatial information processing and visually guided action. This division has been contested by evidence showing that dorsal regions are also engaged in the representation of object shape, even when actions are not required. The critical question is whether these dorsal, object-based representations are dissociable from ventral representations, and whether they play a functional role in object recognition. We examined the neural and behavioral profi

Visual event-related potentials (ERPs) produced by a stimulus are thought to reflect either an increase of synchronized activity or a phase realignment of ongoing oscillatory activity, with both mechanisms sharing the assumption that ERPs are independent of the current state of the brain at the time of stimulation. In natural viewing, however, visual inputs occur one after another at specific subject-paced intervals through unconstrained eye movements. We conjecture that during natural viewing, ERPs generated after each fixation are better explained by a superposition of ongoing oscillatory ac

This study represents the first use of noise masking and signal detection theory to examine mechanisms of visual loss after lesions of visual cortex. Noise-masked contrast thresholds were increased in 2 macaques and 2 humans at lesion-affected, compared with control, regions of their visual fields. Experiments suggested by the organization of visual cortex examined possible mechanisms of the visual loss. Two experiments tested the hypothesis that damage to feedback connections might eliminate the benefit of comparing test stimuli with remembered representations but neither could account for th

The concept of visual dyslexia put forward by Marshall and Newcombe (1973) is assessed. After a long period of neglect it was resurrected in the late 1990s in a narrow form. In the current paper it is proposed that a wider form of the functional syndrome is useful to include amongst other conditions attentional dyslexia and neglect dyslexia. The variety of sub-forms would correspond to the behavioural effects of the different ways in which the orthographic processing systems can be impaired. What distinguishes the broader form from pure alexia is that the patient lacks the capacity to use a se

This paper describes for the first time a detailed study of a child with neglect dyslexia. NT is 10-year-old child, with left word-based neglect dyslexia, without clinical signs of visuo-spatial neglect. Since he is a native speaker of Hebrew, which is read from right to left, his neglect dyslexia manifests in omissions and substitutions of final letters. He is severely impaired in single words, with 96% of his errors being omissions and substitutions of final letters. When presented with more than one word, in word pairs, sentences or text, he neglects the left part of each word, but never om

It is often the case that only partial or degraded views of an object are available to an observer, and yet in many of these cases, object recognition is accomplished with surprising ease. The perceptual filling-in or "closure" that makes this possible has been linked to a group of object recognition areas in the human brain, the lateral occipital (LO) complex, and has been shown to have a specific electrophysiological correlate, the N(cl) component of the event related potential. Perceptual closure presumably occurs because repeated and varied exposure to different classes of objects has caus

Developmental reading disability (dyslexia) has traditionally been attributed to impaired linguistic skills. Recent psychophysical data suggest that dyslexia may be related to a visual perceptual deficit. A few visual evoked potential (VEP) studies have addressed this hypothesis, but their results are far from consistent. We submitted 9 dyslexic subjects and 9 age- and sex-matched normal controls to checkerboard pattern reversal VEPs. The main experimental variables were: large (0.5 cycles per degree; cpd) and small (2 cpd) checks and two reversal frequencies (2.1 Hz and 8 Hz); mean luminance

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded in response to unfamiliar faces and to houses from a severely prosopagnosic patient (PHD) and 24 control subjects. For all control subjects, faces elicited an enhanced negativity at lateral temporal electrodes (N170). This component was absent for PHD. Comparable results were obtained in response to inverted faces and houses. A selective deficit in face recognition is therefore reflected by abnormalities in ERP components specific to faces. As PHD was shown to have substantial deficits on tasks requiring the structural analysis of faces, thes

Change blindness--our inability to detect large changes in natural scenes when saccades, blinks and other transients interrupt visual input--seems to contradict psychophysical evidence for our exquisite sensitivity to contrast changes. Can the type of effects described as 'change blindness' be observed with simple, multi-element stimuli, amenable to psychophysical analysis? Such stimuli, composed of five mixed contrast elements, elicited a striking increase in contrast increment thresholds compared to those for an isolated element. Cue presentation prior to the stimulus substantially reduced t

During locomotion, observers respond to objects in the environment that may represent obstacles to avoid or landmarks for navigation. Although much is known about how visual cortical neurons respond to stimulus objects moving against a blank background, nothing is known about their responses when objects are embedded in optic flow fields (the patterns of motion seen during locomotion). We recorded from cells in the lateral suprasylvian visual area (LS) of the cat, an area probably analogous to area MT. In our first experiments, optic flow simulations mimicked the view of a cat trotting across

Disturbances of visual perception after brain damage provide clues to understanding consciousness and the brain. In this article we review six visual disorders in which perception and consciousness are dissociated as a result of brain damage: blindsight, implicit shape perception in apperceptive visual agnosia, covert recognition of faces in prosopagnosia, unconscious perception in neglect and extinction, implicit reading in pure alexia, and implicit object recognition in associative visual agnosia. We consider these six disorders from the standpoint of three main schools of thought concerning

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) were recorded in the right and left parietal and occipital regions of 40 right-handed controls in a facial recognition task. VEP were studied first according to the renown of the faces, then according to their emotional expression. Asymmetry was noted between the hemispheres: P100 was of greater amplitude and longer latency in the left occipital region. Later components (P400 and P600) were of greater amplitude and longer latency in the right parietal region in all situations. P100 latency on the left side was shorter for renowned faces than for non-renowned face

This study examines the relationship between grating and vernier acuity in cats that were either normally reared, unilaterally amblyopic as a result of a period of monocular deprivation, or bilaterally amblyopic resulting from a period of reverse occlusion followed by binocular visual experience. Vernier acuity was assessed on a jumping stand by use of a vernier-grating stimulus similar to that devised for use with human infants. The vernier thresholds for normal cats were 1.2-1.3 min arc, values that were approx. 6 times better than their grating acuity, and hence may represent a true hyperac

Visual evoked potentials were obtained in nineteen patients during the early phase of alcohol intoxication. Out of the thirty-eight responses recorded in the nineteen patients, 13% were found to be abnormal (5 responses). Repeated testing was done in all patients with abnormal responses at three to four week intervals following treatment with vitamins and balanced diets. In three patients the major positive peaks returned to normal after treatment.

Two gratings composed of lines were displayed one above the other, and the vernier threshold was measured as a function of spatial frequency and vertical separation between gratings for 12 strabismic and/or anisometropic amblyopes. The vernier acuity of the anisometropic amblyopes was similar to that of nonamblyopic eyes when scaled proportionally to their reduced grating acuity. Strabismic amblyopes, on the other hand, have poorer vernier acuity than might be predicted from their grating resolution, even at low spatial frequencies. In addition, the strabismic amblyopes showed "crowding effect

Within the first week of life visual tracking and pattern differentiation were tested in 34 out of 47 premature infants born between 28--34 weeks of gestation. Positive results were achieved from 30 weeks onwards. Pattern differentiation was tested as soon as infants could be taken out of the incubator. Preference could be observed from 31 weeks post-conceptional age. Both functions showed comparable maturation to full-term controls by 34 weeks gestation.

In an attempt to evaluate binocular functions in an objective manner, visual evoked responses (VER) were recorded in sixteen subjects, six with normal binocular functions and ten with various degrees of squint and binocular impairment. The two eyes were stimulated monocularly or dioptically with a polaroid checker board pattern viewed through rotating polaroid discs. The rate of pattern reversal was 7 per sec for one eye and 10 per sec for the other, allowing stimulus locked responses to be recorded from each eye individually, even during dioptic viewing. In normal subjects the VER of each eye

Children's ability to visually categorise objects emerges early in development. However, the use of relevant object features from other modalities, or contextual scene cues, on categorisation across development is poorly understood. In particular, children's categorisation may benefit from any associated cue to categorisation or may be specific to the availability of object-relevant sensory information. We tested children between the ages of 5-13 years on their categorisation of familiar objects, which were presented either as images-only (V), sounds-only (A) or bimodal AV objects. In addition
