Cutaneous sporotrichosis, also known as "Rose Gardener's disease," caused by dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenkii, is usually characterized by indolent nodular or nodulo-ulcerative lesions arranged in a linear pattern. Portions of the placenta and kidneys from a 5-month-old bovine fetus were examined histologically. The placental cotyledonary villi were necrotic and protozoa were found in lesions. The organisms were in trophoblasts, periodic acid Schiff-negative and did not react in an immunoperoxidase test using anti-Toxoplasma gondii serum. Individual zoites were approximately 5 x 2 microns and the biggest collection was 45 x 35 microns. The organism in the present case was structurally distinct from Sarcocystis spp. and Toxoplasma gondii, but resembled Neospora caninum.

The patient was a 73-year-old healthy female farmer who had been treated with terbinafine for 25.5 months by a primary physician. She exhibited a discoloration and thickening of the right big toenail. She had no concomitant paronychia. Direct microscopy revealed chlamydoconidia and hyphae, and periodic acid-Schiff stained nail specimen showed septate hyphae. On the basis of these morphological features and gene analysis, the final diagnosis was ungual hyalohyphomycosis caused by Fusarium proliferatum. Topical application of 10% efinaconazole solution cured the disease in 10 months.

Majocchi's granuloma is a well known but uncommon folliculitic and perifolliculitic dermatophyte infection of the dermal and subcutaneous tissue by fungal organism, usually limited to the superficial dermis. We report a rare case of superficial perifollicular form of Majocchi's granuloma, caused by Trichophyton rubrum on the scrotal skin of a healthy man. Histological examination of the biopsied nodule revealed perifolliculitis with fungal elements and the periodic acid schiff staining was positive to fungal elements. His lesion cleared completely with the use of a topical antifungal agent.

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas in two mice were investigated histologically, immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally. Disseminated cryptococcosis is a life-threatening infection with cutaneous dissemination in 10% to 20% of cases. We describe seven patients with disseminated cryptococcosis with variable cutaneous manifestations. AIDS was a predisposing factor in six patients. Cutaneous presentations included a draining sinus tract, verrucous nodules, molluscum-like lesions and erythematous, indurated plaques. We established a new "ecological" Grocott stain for demonstrating fungi, based upon a 4R principle of refusal, reduction, reuse, and recycle of waste management. PURPOSE: Ethylene glycol (EG), a widely used industrial compound, has been implicated in accidental poisoning and homicide. Although the nephrotoxic mechanisms of EG are well characterized, its acute hepatotoxic potential remains underexplored.
