Short report: distribution and feeding preference of the sand flies Phlebotomus sergenti and P. papatasi in a cutaneous leishmaniasis focus in Sanliurfa, Turkey.

Sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) and rodents were collected in the endemic focus of urban cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sanliurfa, Turkey. Phlebotomus sergenti and P. papatasi represented 99% of the sand fly population. These flies were trapped in highest numbers in animal sheds, followed by cellars. However, P. sergenti was relatively more abundant in rooms. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of the gut contents from blood-fed females detected immunoglobulins specific to birds and mammals, suggesting that both species are opportunistic feeders, although poultry is a frequent blood source of P

Evaluating the effect of immunization with DNA encoding Phlebotomus sergenti apyrase protein (PsSP42) against Leishmania tropica infection in BALB/c mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Leishmania parasites are transmitted through the bite of infected female sand flies. The sand fly inoculum contains both the parasite and the salivary proteins, which can modulate the immune system's function. Some of these salivary proteins have the potential to be used as a vaccine candidate. Since there have been fewer studies investigating the salivary proteins of Phlebotomus (Ph.) sergenti, this prompted us to select among the three protein members of Ph. sergenti apyrase family (PsSP40, PsSP41, and PsSP42) and measure its effectiveness as vaccine candidate against Leishmania

Phlebotomus papatasi sand fly predicted salivary protein diversity and immune response potential based on in silico prediction in Egypt and Jordan populations.

Phlebotomus papatasi sand flies inject their hosts with a myriad of pharmacologically active salivary proteins to assist with blood feeding and to modulate host defenses. In addition, salivary proteins can influence cutaneous leishmaniasis disease outcome, highlighting the potential of the salivary components to be used as a vaccine. Variability of vaccine targets in natural populations influences antigen choice for vaccine development. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the variability in the predicted protein sequences of nine of the most abundantly expressed salivary

Human cellular and humoral immune responses to Phlebotomus papatasi salivary gland antigens in endemic areas differing in prevalence of Leishmania major infection.

BACKGROUND: Sand fly saliva compounds are able to elicit specific immune responses that have a significant role in Leishmania parasite establishment and disease outcome. Characterizing anti-saliva immune responses in individuals living in well defined leishmaniasis endemic areas would provide valuable insights regarding their effect on parasite transmission and establishment in humans. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We explored the cellular and humoral immune responses to Phlebotomus (P.) papatasi salivary gland extracts (SGE) in individuals living in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) old or emer

Establishment of Real-Time PCR Method to Differentiate Phlebotomus sichuanensis (Diptera, Psychodidae) from P. chinensis s.s. Based on Whole Mitochondrial Genome Analysis.

Phlebotomus sichuanensis, considered a potential vector for visceral leishmaniasis (VL), is distributed in the southern Gansu and northern Sichuan regions in China. However, the high similarity in the morphology of P. sichuanensis and P. chinensis s.s. poses unresolved taxonomic challenges. In this study, phlebotomine sand flies were collected from three locations in the southern Gansu and northern Sichuan regions (SCB group) and three locations that are the dominant distribution areas of P. chinensis s.s. (ZHB group). Their whole mitochondrial genomes were sequenced and analyzed. The differen

Insecticidal efficacy against Phlebotomus perniciosus in dogs treated orally with fluralaner in two different parallel-group, negative-control, random and masked trials.

BACKGROUND: Dogs are the reservoir host of Leishmania infantum, the agent of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (VL), which is transmitted by the bite of phlebotomine sand flies. The sand fly Phlebotomus perniciosus is the main vector of zoonotic VL in the western Mediterranean region. Fluralaner has been shown to effectively kill this vector. The aim of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal efficacy of oral fluralaner in dogs bitten by P. perniciosus. METHODS: Two parallel-group, negative-controlled, randomized, masked laboratory trials with equivalent designs were performed in two differ

Evolution, systematics and historical biogeography of sand flies of the subgenus Paraphlebotomus (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotomus) inferred using restriction-site associated DNA markers.

Phlebotomine sand flies are the main natural vectors of Leishmania, which cause visceral and tegumentary tropical diseases worldwide. However, their taxonomy and evolutionary history remain poorly studied. Indeed, as for many human disease vectors, their small size is a challenge for morphological and molecular works. Here, we successfully amplified unbiased copies of whole genome to sequence thousands of restriction-site associated DNA (RAD) markers from single specimens of phlebotomines. RAD markers were used to infer a fully resolved phylogeny of the subgenus Paraphlebotomus (11 species + 5

Long-lasting insecticidal nets fail at household level to reduce abundance of sandfly vector Phlebotomus argentipes in treated houses in Bihar (India).

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINS) at household level are effective in reducing the abundance of Phlebotomus argentipes, vector of anthroponotic visceral leishmaniasis in India, Nepal and Bangladesh. METHODS: The impact of two long-lasting nets (Olyset and PermaNet) on indoor sandfly abundance was evaluated in selected houses of three endemic hamlets in Bihar (India). It was assumed that most sandflies breed inside the houses and that LLINs would progressively reduce the indoor density during the reproduction season. A campaign of indoor spraying

Outdoor Residual Insecticide Spraying (ODRS), a New Approach for the Control of the Exophilic Vectors of Human Visceral Leishmaniasis: Phlebotomus orientalis in East Africa.

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) due to Leishmania donovani is a neglected protozoan parasitic disease in humans, which is usually fatal if untreated. Phlebotomus orientalis, the predominant VL vector in East Africa, is a highly exophilic/exophagic species that poses a major challenge to current Integrated Vector Management (IVM). Here we report results of pilot studies conducted in rural villages in Gedarif state, Sudan, to evaluate outdoor residual spraying of 20mg active ingredient (a.i.) /m2 deltamethrin insecticide applied to the characteristic household compound boundary reed fence and to the

Studies on the epidemiology of sandfly fever in Iran. II. The prevalence of human and animal infection with five phlebotomus fever virus serotypes in Isfahan province.

Human and animal sera from an endemic area of sandfly fever in Iran were tested by plaque reduction neutralization method against five different Phlebotomus fever virus serotypes (Naples, Sicilian, Karimabad, Salehabad, and I-47). The overall prevalence of Naples, Sicilian, and Karimabad virus antibodies among the human population was 17%, 25%, and 66%, respectively. All sera were negative against Salehabad and I-47 viruses. Age-specific antibody rates suggested that Sicilian and Karimabad viruses were endemic in the study area but that Naples virus activity was sporadic. These observations we
