A conceptual comparison of bioenergy options for using mountain pine beetle infested wood in Western Canada.

Biomass is nearly carbon neutral and can be used for the production of various liquid fuels and chemicals. Decisions on biomass utilization should be based on the most economical and mature route. This study analyzes mountain pine beetle (MPB) killed wood as the feedstock for production of bio-ethanol and bio-oil and compares it with the direct combustion route to produce electricity. The MPB infestation of British Columbia's (BC), a western province of Canada, forest has reached an epidemic proportion and is spread over an area of 10 millionha. According to the current estimates of BC's Minis

Arsenic accumulation in bark beetles and forest birds occupying mountain pine beetle infested stands treated with monosodium methanearsonate.

The arsenic-based pesticide, monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA), is presently being evaluated for re-registration in Canada and the United States and has been widely used in British Columbia to help suppress Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) outbreaks. We assessed the availability and exposure of MSMA to woodpeckers and other forest birds that may prey directly on contaminated bark beetles. Total arsenic residues in MPB from MSMA treated trees ranged from 1.3-700.2 microg g(-1) dw (geometric mean 42.0 microg g(-1)) with the metabolite monomethyl arsonic acid (MMAA) contributing 90-97% to the total ars

Gene Editing in Forest Tree Breeding for Stress Resistance: From Mechanisms to Future Prospects.

Forest ecosystems face escalating threats from climate change alongside a surging demand for sustainable bioproducts. While conventional tree breeding is inherently constrained by long generation cycles, high heterozygosity, and complex genomes, CRISPR-based genome editing provides a precision framework for targeted genetic improvement. This review synthesises the fundamental principles and limitations of multiple gene-editing technologies, with a particular emphasis on CRISPR systems (Cas9, Cas12, and Cas13), in the specific context of woody perennial biology. Recent applications in key fores

Emergency Control Strategies for Hylurgops longipillus R. (Coleoptera, Scolytinae) Outbreaks: From Chemical Communication to Integrated Management.

Under climate warming, bark beetle outbreaks increasingly threaten forest health. Hylurgops longipillus, a native bark beetle in Northeast China, causes patchy mortality in Pinus koraiensis plantations. We developed an integrated emergency control system based on host selection chemical ecology. Damage characterization revealed that adults concentrated on trees with 10-50% crown needle yellowing, and infestations expanded as discrete patches radiating from multiple epicenters. Electrophysiological and behavioral assays of host volatiles and some of their isomers yielded a highly effective attr

(+)-a-Longipinene alleviates murine laser-induced choroidal neovascularization: Evidence from in vivo and in vitro experiments.

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a progressive, degenerative pathological change. CNV can lead to severe vision loss, even blindness. (+)-a-Longipinene (LON) is an essential oil isolated from Pinus koraiensis and Hypericum. It plays anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic roles. Here, we attempted to identify the role and mechanism of action of (+)-a-LON in a murine model of laser-induced CNV as well as in vitro in hypoxic human choroidal endothelial cells (HCECs). (+)-a-LON alleviated the formation of laser-induced CNV in mice without causing ocular and systemic toxicity. Moreover, (+)-a-L

Modified kraft lignin as sustainable consolidants for waterlogged archaeological wood.

This study evaluates lightened kraft lignin: modified via acetylation and encapsulation, as a sustainable consolidant for waterlogged archaeological pine (Pinus sp.) from the Biskupin site (Poland). Lignin was acetylated with acetic anhydride/pyridine and, in a separate route, converted into colloidal capsules by tetrahydrofuran/water self‑assembly; both modifications were characterized and then applied to waterlogged archaeological wood by 2‑week immersion. Effectiveness was assessed by Fourier‑transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), colourimetry, linear di

Pine Needle Extract Applicable to Topical Treatment for the Prevention of Human Papillomavirus Infection.

Most cervical cancers are associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Currently, cervical cancer treatment entails surgical removal of the lesion, but treatment of infection and preventing tissue damage are issues that still remain to be addressed. Herbal medicine and biological studies have focused on developing antiviral drugs from natural sources. In this study, we analyzed the potential antiviral effects of Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. leaf extracts against HPV. The pine needle extracts from each organic solvent were analyzed for antiviral activity. The methylene chl

A study of metal distribution from lignite fuels using trees as biological monitors.

Concentrations of five metals (Cd, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn) were determined in tree leaves collected from an area with large coal-fired plants in Ptolemais, Macedonia, Greece. The analyses were carried out with flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Mean heavy metal content in the tree leaves is, in descending order, Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu>Cd. In Populus nigra and Salix babylonica the dense piled leaves and the widespread root system are the reasons for high heavy metal uptake. Conifer trees Pinus nigra and Juniperus arizona, which have a rough leaf surface, also had elevated concentrations. Leaves with a smooth s

Stability and structure-preserving numerical analysis of a stochastic delayed pine wilt disease model.

Pine wilt disease is a destructive forest disease involving pine trees, pinewood nematodes, and insect vectors. This study develops deterministic and stochastic delayed host-vector models to examine waiting periods and variability in transmission. For the deterministic system, positivity, boundedness, equilibria, and the basic reproduction number R0 are established. The disease-free equilibrium is locally and globally asymptotically stable when R0<1, while the endemic equilibrium is assessed through delay-dependent local stability. The stochastic model includes multiplicative environmental noi

Unraveling spatiotemporal dynamics of pine wilt disease via time-series UAV monitoring and deep learning.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics of pine wilt disease (PWD) to inform data-driven management. We implemented a time-series monitoring framework in a township in Zhejiang Province, China, acquiring seven sequences of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) orthomosaics between 2022 and 2024. An enhanced YOLOX-based change detection model was developed and trained on 300 000 samples. This model exploits phenological variations to automatically identify PWD-discolored pines, effectively filtering confounding objects. RESULTS: The model demonstrated robust performance, achiev

Improved methodology for tracing a pulse of 13C-labelled tree photosynthate carbon to ectomycorrhizal roots, other soil biota and soil processes in the field.

Isotopic pulse-labelling of photosynthate allows tracing of carbon (C) from tree canopies to below-ground biota and calculations of its turnover in roots and recipient soil microorganisms. A high concentration of label is desirable but is difficult to achieve in field studies of intact ecosystem patches with trees. Moreover, root systems of trees overlap considerably in most forests, which requires a large labelled area to minimize the impact of C allocated below-ground by un-labelled trees. We describe a method which combines a high level of labelling at ambient concentrations of CO2, [CO2],

The co-pyrolysis of waste urea-formaldehyde resin with pine sawdust: co-pyrolysis behavior, pyrocarbon and its adsorption performance for Cr (VI).

Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin is difficult to degrade and classified as hazardous organic waste. To address this concern, the co-pyrolysis behavior of UF resin with pine sawdust (PS) was studied, and the adsorption properties of pyrocarbon were evaluated with Cr (VI). Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that adding a small amount of PS can improve the pyrolysis behavior of UF resin. Based on the Flynn Wall Ozawa (FWO) method, the kinetics and activation energy values were estimated. It was observed that when the amount of UF resin exceeded twice that of PS, the activation energy of the reaction

Plant-herbivorous insect networks: who is eating what revealed by long barcodes using high-throughput sequencing and Trinity assembly.

Interactions between plants and insects are among the most important life functions for all organism at a particular natural community. Usually a large number of samples are required to identify insect diets in food web studies. Previously, Sanger sequencing and next generation sequencing (NGS) with short DNA barcodes were used, resulting in low species-level identification; meanwhile the costs of Sanger sequencing are expensive for metabarcoding together with more samples. Here, we present a fast and effective sequencing strategy to identify larvae of Lepidoptera and their diets at the same t

Elevated root retention of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in coniferous trees.

For decades, the explosive RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine) has been used for military and industrial applications. Residues of RDX pollute soils in large areas globally and the persistence and high soil mobility of these residues can lead to leaching into groundwater. Dendroremediation, i.e. the long-term use of trees to clean up polluted soils, is gaining acceptance as a green and sustainable strategy. Although the coniferous tree species Norway spruce and Scots pine cover large areas of military land in Central Europe, the potential of any coniferous tree for dendroremediation

Selective pressurised liquid extraction of halogenated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls from pine needles.

Pine needles are an ideal matrix for the long-term monitoring of semi-volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere because they are naturally occurring and distributed worldwide. However, typical extraction methods result in the co-elution of matrix-interfering compounds and thus require time-consuming clean-up steps. A selective pressurised liquid extraction method (S-PLE) for extracting current-use pesticides, historic-use pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from pine needles that does not require additional clean-up steps was developed and validated. The selective extraction was

Nitrogen spatial heterogeneity influences diversity following restoration in a ponderosa pine forest, Montana.

The resource heterogeneity hypothesis (RHH) is frequently cited in the ecological literature as an important mechanism for maintaining species diversity. The RHH has rarely been evaluated in the context of restoration ecology in which a commonly cited goal is to restore diversity. In this study we focused on the spatial heterogeneity of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) following restoration treatments in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)/Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forest in western Montana, USA. Our objective was to evaluate relationships between understory species richness and TIN het

Catalytic activity of active carbons impregnated before activation of pinewood sawdust and nutshells to be used on the control of atmospheric emissions.

This work analyses the catalytic activity of metal oxides impregnated on activated carbons to be used for the complete oxidation of benzene present in atmospheric emissions. When the impregnation step is performed before CO2 activation, the knowledge about catalytic activity is as yet quite scarce, being the main objective of the study here reported. Pinewood sawdust and nutshells were recycled to produce the activated carbons. Non-expensive metal oxides (CoO, Co3O4 and CrO3) were impregnated. When the impregnation was performed before CO2 activation instead of after activation, at 523 K the k

Genome and transcriptome-based identification and expression profiling of chemosensory gene families across developmental stages and tissues in Sirex noctilio (Hymenoptera: Siricidae).

The Sirex woodwasp (Sirex noctilio; Hymenoptera: Siricidae) is among the most destructive invasive pests affecting Pinus plantations worldwide. Chemosensory systems offer promising targets for pest control strategies. The identification and characterization of chemosensation genes in non-model, economically significant insects such as S. noctilio, is an important first step towards the development of such control methods. Here we sequenced and assembled a draft genome of S. noctilio and performed RNA-sequencing of 15 olfactory and non-olfactory tissues to study the expression patterns of chemo

"The Last of Them": Entomopathogenic Effect of Akanthomyces muscarius on the Scale Insect Pest Toumeyella parvicornis Under Laboratory Conditions, a Potential Biological Control Candidate.

Entomopathogenic fungi are valuable alternatives to traditional agrochemicals, providing more sustainable crop protection. Akanthomyces spp. is acknowledged in biocontrol practices, especially in controlling aphids, thrips, whiteflies, and mites; however, its efficacy on soft scale insects is still poorly known. This study investigates the potential use of Akanthomyces muscarius on the soft scale insect Toumeyella parvicornis, a new invasive pest for European stone pines (Pinus pinea). The strain of A. muscarius tested in the experimentation has been isolated from Parthenolecanium corni, a sof
