Many insects elicit development of unique organs in their host plants called galls while feeding or ovipositing. Galls are organ-like entities that protect against biotic and abiotic stresses and provide a specialized nutrition supply. The signals used by gall-forming insects to elicit and shape galls are unknown, but phytohormones, peptides, small RNAs and arabinogalactan proteins are leading candidates. These four signal categories may work together to elicit galls and guide their development, but evidence of their transfer from insect to plant is incomplete. Galls vary in complexity from si

The nature of plant-fungi interaction at early stages of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) development is still a puzzling problem. To investigate the processes behind this interaction, we used the Medicago lupulina MlS-1 line that forms high-efficient AM symbiosis with Rhizophagus irregularis. AM fungus actively colonizes the root system of the host plant and contributes to the formation of effective AM as characterized by a high mycorrhizal growth response (MGR) in the host plant. The present study is aimed at distinguishing the alterations in the M. lupulina root metabolic profile as an indicative

Legumes are essential components of global cropping systems due to their nutritional value and contribution to sustainable agriculture. Among the regulatory molecules, small RNAs (sRNAs), particularly microRNAs (miRNAs), play crucial roles in plant development and in responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. miRNAs regulate genes involved in diverse developmental processes, including nodule formation, which is fundamental for the nitrogen-fixing symbiosis that characterizes legumes. Functional studies have demonstrated that miRNAs are key modulators of plant defense, contributing to resistance

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ontogenetic changes in anti-herbivore defences are common and result from variation in resource availability and herbivore damage throughout plant development. However, little is known about the simultaneous changes of multiple defences across the entire development of plants, and how such changes affect plant damage in the field. The aim of this study was to assess if changes in the major types of plant resistance and tolerance can explain natural herbivore damage throughout plant ontogeny.
METHODS: An assessment was made of how six defensive traits, including physical,

Plant biostimulants have emerged as transformative and sustainable tools for improving crop productivity, resource-use efficiency, and resilience under rapidly intensifying environmental stresses. Unlike conventional agrochemicals, biostimulants function by activating physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes that optimize plant performance without directly supplying nutrients or exerting pesticidal effects. This review comprehensively examines the integrated roles of plant-derived and microbial biostimulants in sustainable agriculture, with particular emphasis on microbial-mediated

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are steroid hormones that are essential for plant growth, development, and environmental adaptation. They control the division, elongation, and differentiation of various cell types throughout the entire plant life cycle, affecting growth and the stress response. Therefore, fine-tuning of BR biosynthesis and modulation of signaling pathways offer possibilities for developing cultivars characterized by adjusted plant architecture or improved stress tolerance to benefit crop production. Additionally, precise BR treatments can be employed to increase the productivity of cro

The ever increasing movement of viruses around the world poses a major threat to plants growing in cultivated and natural ecosystems. Both generalist and specialist viruses move via trade in plants and plant products. Their potential to damage cultivated plants is well understood, but little attention has been given to the threat such viruses pose to plant biodiversity. To address this, we studied their impact, and that of indigenous viruses, on native plants from a global biodiversity hot spot in an isolated region where agriculture is very recent (<185 years), making it possible to distingui

Soil serves as the primary medium for root development, water storage, and microbial activity, making it essential for plant growth and development. However, changes in water molecular organization associated with soil-plant interactions under organic fertilization remain poorly understood. In this study, near-infrared (NIR) aquaphotomics was applied to investigate water spectral patterns in soil-plant systems under three fertilization treatments: control, pig manure (PM), and pig manure supplemented with plant-derived liquid fertilizer (PM + LF). Two leafy vegetables, mustard spinach and spin

Plant ecophysiology is the discipline within plant physiology that focuses on understanding how physiological processes in relation to environmental changes occur and how such responses differ among species. In this review, we provide a brief introduction to the historical corners that built the foundations of the discipline. Then, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Plant Physiology, we highlight a sample of the key papers published by the journal over a century that have been landmarks in the development of Plant Ecophysiology as the well-structured discipline that it is nowadays. These ar

Sugars, vital metabolites for cellular health, play a central role in regulating diverse intracellular pathways that control plant growth and development. They also enhance stress responses, enabling plants to endure adverse conditions. A few intracellular molecules involved in sensing the intracellular sugar content and concomitantly facilitating appropriate response (growth or survivability) are known as sugar sensors. Among the numerous sugar sensors identified in plants, this review focuses on four extensively studied sugar sensors, namely hexokinase (HXK), Sucrose non-fermenting 1-related

At present, China is at an essential stage in the progress of social civilisation. At the same time, China's current economic level is developing rapidly and the level of urbanisation is also increasing. However, the uncontrolled development of urban space and excessive consumption of land resources have led to many urban ecological and environmental problems. As a result, there is an urgent need to improve the urban habitat. Plant landscaping is an important part of the urban environment. In addition, plant landscaping is also a crucial part of the visual arts and plays a key role in the shap

Sexual dimorphism in the dioecious plant white campion (Silene latifolia = Melandrium album) is under the control of two main regions on the Y chromosome. One such region, encoding the gynoecium-suppressing function (GSF), is responsible for the arrest of carpel initiation in male flowers. To generate chromosomal deletions, we used pollen irradiation in male plants to produce hermaphroditic mutants (bsx mutants) in which carpel development was restored. The mutants resulted from alterations in at least two GSF chromosomal regions, one autosomal and one located on the distal half of the (p)-arm

The agriculture sector is vulnerable to various environmental stresses, which significantly affect plant growth, performance, and development. Abiotic stresses, such as salinity and drought, cause severe losses in crop productivity worldwide. Soil salinity is a major stress suppressing plant development through osmotic stress accompanied by ion toxicity, nutritional imbalance, and oxidative stress. Various defense mechanisms like osmolytes accumulations, activation of stress-induced genes, and transcription factors, production of plant growth hormones, accumulation of antioxidants, and redox d

Bacterial wilt is a devastating vascular disease caused by the soil-borne bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum, which invades and blocks the xylem of susceptible plants, especially economically important solanaceous crops. In addition to classical plant defense hormones, recent research has focused on understanding the role of auxin as a key and continuous regulator of infection and development. Auxin connects changes during infection to root development and the progression of bacterial wilt disease. The auxin related shift in plant hormone patterns associated with root development has been observ

The use of beneficial bacterial strains is proposed as a nature based practice to support sustainable crop production. Strains exposed to extreme environmental stress may have developed robust stress resistance and the capacity to enhance plant growth under unfavorable conditions. Our study provides the new aspect in characterising bacteria from polluted soil. The novelty of our study was isolation of bacteria from a long-term contaminated site and their testing for plant growth promoting mechanisms. The aim of this research was to characterize bacterial strains, collected from the root zone o

Plants have numerous strategies for phytoremediation depending upon the characteristic of pollutants. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are essential to the process of phytoremediation and play a key part in it. The mechanism of PGPR for phytoremediation is mediated by two methods; under the direct method there is phytohormone production, nitrogen fixation, nutrient mineral solubilization, and siderophore production while the indirect method includes quorum quenching, antibiosis, production of lytic enzyme, biofilm formation, and hydrogen cyanide production. Due to their economic and

With a growing economy, the living standard of people has improved which has led to increased use of urban motor vehicles globally. Consequently, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has increased in the ambient air, becoming a major pollutant in urban areas. Plant leaves can absorb, adsorb and fix nitrogen oxides to some extent. Interestingly, NO2 has been recognized as a positive/negative regulator of plant growth. To comprehensively understand the effect of NO2-induced pollution on plants, Bougainvillea spectabilis seedlings were fumigated with different concentrations of nitrogen di

Tissue morphogenesis requires extensive intercellular communication. Plant organs are composites of distinct radial cell layers. A typical layer, such as the epidermis, is propagated by stereotypic anticlinal cell divisions. It is presently unclear what mechanisms coordinate cell divisions relative to the plane of a layer, resulting in planar growth and maintenance of the layer structure. Failure in the regulation of coordinated growth across a tissue may result in spatially restricted abnormal growth and the formation of a tumor-like protrusion. Therefore, one way to approach planar growth co

Thermogenesis is attributed to the cyanide resistant respiration in the inflorescence of Arum lilies. Although cyanide resistant respiration is ubiquitously operative in the plant systems, it has never been correlated with thermogenesis except for the above example. Internal temperature of the ripening mango increased from 29.0 degrees C to 38.9 degrees C during its ripening process. Concomitantly, it was coupled with the increase in total respiration and cyanide resistant respiration as well. Implication of cyanide resistant respiration in thermogenesis has been discussed in relation to the r
