Quantifying the underestimated plant potential for phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands: Revealing the mediating mechanism of radial oxygen loss.

Substrate adsorption is considered the primary phosphorus removal pathway in subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs), but the role of plants in this process remains underestimated. To clarify this issue, this study conducted root restriction by decreasing substrate depth from 60 cm to 10 and 20 cm to intensify the radial oxygen loss (ROL). On this basis, the resultant enhancement to soluble total phosphorus (TP) removal from late spring to early winter was quantified. Further, the underlying enhancing mechanisms were revealed by analyzing the P mass balance and substrate surface interfacial

Metarhizium fight club: Within-host competitive exclusion and resource partitioning.

Both Metarhizium robertsii ARSEF 2575 (Mr2575) and Metarhizium anisopliae ARSEF 549 (Ma549) infect a range of insects whilst also interacting with plants; however, little is known about the traits that affect the competitive ability of different strains. We examined the interactions between Mr2575 and Ma549 in culture and during co-infection of plants (Arabidopsis thaliana) and insects. Mr2575 outcompetes Ma549 under nutrient-limiting conditions, including root exudates, giving it a priority advantage on Arabidopsis roots. However, during co-infection of Manduca sexta or Drosophila melanogaste

Rhizosphere Diazotrophs in Acidic Agroecosystems: An Evidence-Chain and Microbiome-Compatibility Framework for Stabilizing Crop Growth Promotion.

Acidic soils are widespread in global agroforestry systems and severely constrain crop production through proton stress, aluminum/manganese phytotoxicity, phosphorus fixation, and rhizosphere microbiome reassembly. Rhizosphere diazotrophs can theoretically contribute to plant nitrogen (N) nutrition and stress adaptation. However, their N-fixation efficiency and growth-promoting effects in acidic soils are often highly unstable, limiting the predictability of field applications. This narrative mechanistic review synthesizes and critically interprets evidence on the physicochemical filters gover

Bridging research gaps and advancing policy for healthy soils.

The policy framework previously presented by Neale and colleagues in Sustainable Microbiology highlights the central role of soil microorganisms in sustainable agriculture and global food security, offering actionable interventions grounded in emerging scientific advances. However, the translation of soil science and ecology into impactful policy and practice remains limited. This opinion article revisits the longstanding concept of soil biotechnology, and regulatory/societal barriers to progress. We emphasize that the soil microbiome holds untapped potential for improving plant health, reduci

Cloning and Molecular Characterization of the phlD Gene Involved in the Biosynthesis of "Phloroglucinol", a Compound with Antibiotic Properties from Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria Pseudomonas spp.

phlD is a novel kind of polyketide synthase involved in the biosynthesis of non-volatile metabolite phloroglucinol by iteratively condensing and cyclizing three molecules of malonyl-CoA as substrate. Phloroglucinol or 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) is an ecologically important rhizospheric antibiotic produced by pseudomonads; it exhibits broad spectrum anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, leading to disease suppression in the rhizosphere. Additionally, DAPG triggers systemic resistance in plants, stimulates root exudation, as well as induces phyto-enhancing activities in other rhizoba

Kinetics of uptake, translocation, and metabolism of organophosphate esters in japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.): Hydroponic experiment combined with model.

Hydroponics combined with fugacity model was employed to investigate the kinetics of uptake, accumulation, and metabolism of organophosphate esters (OPEs) by japonica rice. The time-dependent process for uptake and accumulation of 5 OPEs and their diester-metabolites in both rice root and shoot fitted well with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The peak OPE accumulations in rice root and shoot were significantly positively or negatively correlated with their octanol-water partition coefficient (logKow) respectively, but not for their apparent accumulation rates. Root concentration factors

Ethylene oxide burn in a chemical plant worker: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ethylene oxide is a chemical agent that is widely used for the sterilization of medical equipment and the manufacture of chemicals. Although ethylene oxide burns are frequent and can be severe, many workers are unaware of their risks. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old man presented with painful exudative lesions on the right foot after working with ethylene oxide solution in a chemical plant. The patient stated that the solution had percolated through his shoe and he had not washed the solution off for 5 hours. Symptoms, including pain and erythema, appeared after a delay of more t

Effects of cover cropping on orchard soil microbiomes: Mechanisms and perspectives.

Orchards have long faced severe soil erosion, acidification of red soils, low nutrient-use efficiency, and frequent soil-borne diseases. Conventional clean tillage combined with intensive chemical inputs often fails to simultaneously improve fruit yield and quality while safeguarding orchard ecological security. Cover cropping (i.e., managed groundcover vegetation) introduces persistent surface plant cover and introduces continuous inputs of root exudates, litter, and residues, while simultaneously modifying soil moisture, temperature, aggregation, porosity, and nutrient availability. Conseque

Mercury cycling in agricultural and managed wetlands of California, USA: experimental evidence of vegetation-driven changes in sediment biogeochemistry and methylmercury production.

The role of live vegetation in sediment methylmercury (MeHg) production and associated biogeochemistry was examined in three types of agricultural wetlands (domesticated or white rice, wild rice, and fallow fields) and adjacent managed natural wetlands (cattail- and bulrush or tule-dominated) in the Yolo Bypass region of California's Central Valley, USA. During the active growing season for each wetland, a vegetated:de-vegetated paired plot experiment demonstrated that the presence of live plants enhanced microbial rates of mercury methylation by 20 to 669% (median=280%) compared to de-vegetat

Organ-Specific Phytochemical Profiles, Wound-Healing and Hemostatic Activities of Symphytum officinale Aerial Parts and Roots with Differential Pyrrolizidine Alkaloid Content.

Wound healing is a complex biological process involving inflammation, hemostasis, and tissue regeneration, and its impairment may delay recovery and lead to clinical complications. Medicinal plants have long been used in traditional medicine to support wound repair and control bleeding. Among these, Symphytum officinale L. (comfrey) is widely used in European traditional medicine for the treatment of wounds, fractures, and soft tissue injuries. However, the pharmacological basis of these effects and the contribution of different plant organs remain insufficiently understood. The aim of this st

First Report of Pomegranate Wilt Caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata in Sichuan Province.

During May of 2009, a new devastating disease was observed on pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) that caused losses estimated at 30% as surveyed by 10 orchards in Panzhihua-Xichang Region of Sichuan Province, Southwest China. Characteristic symptoms were yellow and wilting leaves. Initial symptoms only occurred on shoots, but later, leaves of the whole tree turned yellow and wilted, causing extensive defoliation and dieback and the xylem of the trunk turned brown to black with a star burst-like pattern. Finally, heavy infection resulted in the whole tree dying, causing severe yield losses. A fun

A methanolic fraction of a chloroform extract of defatted Pluchea indica roots was investigated for its antiinflammatory potential against several models of inflammation. The extract showed significant inhibitory activity against carrageenin-, histamine-, serotonin-, hyaluronidase- and sodium urate-induced pedal inflammation. The extract inhibited protein exudation and leucocyte migration. The extract also inhibited carrageenin- and cotton pellet-induced granuloma formation as well as turpentine-induced joint oedema and adjuvant-induced polyarthritis. The present observations establish the eff

Uninhibited biosynthesis and release of phytosiderophores in the presence of heavy metal (HM) favors HM remediation.

Production of phytosiderophore (PS) has been causally related to iron-deficiency tolerance in cereals. However, PS can also chelate heavy metal and thus may represent a viable phytoextraction strategy on contaminated soils. Two separate experiments were conducted to assess the affect of heavy metal on phytosiderophore biosynthesis and their release in the rhizosphere of wheat. Root exudates were collected from 10-day-old wheat seedlings raised on Fe-deficient nutrient solution in the presence of 2.5, 5.0, and 10 mM concentration of different heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Ni) for 3-day period, for

Crowding and winter emergency feeding as predisposing factors for kerato-conjunctivitis in semi-domesticated reindeer in Norway.

Due to the hard environmental and climatic situation in late winter 1999, a herd of about 200 free-ranging, semi-domesticated reindeer was gathered in a paddock in northern Norway for emergency feeding. About the same number of reindeer was not corralled but supplementary fed on their winter pastures. The fodder was of relatively good quality but very dusty and fed in a very dry environment. Six weeks later, an outbreak of eye-infection was diagnosed in one third of the corralled reindeer; mild symptoms were observed in most of them, but 11 animals showed severe signs of disease. No signs of d

3D printed Aloe barbadensis loaded alginate-gelatin hydrogel for wound healing and scar reduction: In vitro and in vivo study.

Wounds are one of the most critical clinical issues in plastic surgery repair and restoration. Conventional wound dressing materials cannot absorb enough wound exudates and shield the site from microbial infection. Also, despite their healing prowess, bioactive molecules from medicinal plants are less bioavailable at the wound sites. This study developed a 3D-printed hydrogel of sodium alginate and gelatin loaded with freeze-dried Aloe barbadensis extract for enhanced wound healing. The hydrogel was hydrophilic and showed an average pore size of 163.66 ± 14.45 μm, moderate swellability, and id

Antifungal activity of Zuccagnia punctata Cav.: evidence for the mechanism of action.

Petroleum ether and dichloromethane extracts of fruits, aerial parts and exudate of Zuccagnia punctata Cav. (Fabaceae) showed moderate antifungal activities against the yeasts C. albicans, S. cerevisiae and C. neoformans (MICs: 62.5 - 250 microg/mL) and very strong antifungal activities against the dermatophytes M. gypseum, T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes (MICs: 8 - 16 microg/mL) thus supporting the ethnopharmacological use of this plant. Antifungal activity-directed fractionation of active extracts by using bioautography led to the isolation of 2',4'-dihydroxy-3'-methoxychalcone (1) and 2',4'

The influence of organic ligands on the retention of lead in soil.

Organic acids are commonly produced and exuded by plant roots and soil microorganisms. Some of these organic compounds are effective chelating agents and have the potential to enhance metal mobility. The effect of citrate and salicylate on the leaching of lead in soil was investigated in a laboratory experiment. In short-term batch experiments, adsorption of lead to soil was slightly enhanced with increasing salicylate concentration (500-5000 microM) but decreased significantly in the presence of citrate. These observations suggested that citrate may enhance Pb leaching, but this was not obser

Loss of LaMATE impairs isoflavonoid release from cluster roots of phosphorus-deficient white lupin.

White lupin (Lupinus albus L.) forms brush-like root structures called cluster roots under phosphorus-deficient conditions. Clusters secrete citrate and other organic compounds to mobilize sparingly soluble soil phosphates. In the context of aluminum toxicity tolerance mechanisms in other species, citrate is released via a subgroup of MATE/DTX proteins (multidrug and toxic compound extrusion/detoxification). White lupin contains 56 MATE/DTX genes. Many of these are closely related to gene orthologs with known substrates in other species. LaMATE is a marker gene for functional, mature clusters

Sugar meal sources for the phlebotomine sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis in Ceará State, Brazil.

In the Brazilian village of Boqueirão do Renato Parente, Ceará State, where visceral leishmaniasis is endemic, significant variation in the abundance of phlebotomine sandflies between different types of vegetation was demonstrated by castor oil sticky trap collections. Population densities of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) sandflies were higher in beans and maize crops than in the surrounding open and tree scrub. Significant relationships were detected between the abundances of sandflies and aphids, suggesting aphid honeydew as a potential food source. Sugar meal analysis, using high-per
