Variation in skin reactivity inhalant allergens estimated by the end-point technique.

Skin prick testing is commonly used to diagnose IgE-mediated sensitization to allergens, whereas the longitudinal variability in positive/negative results can be used for clinical and epidemiological purposes. Few publications have investigated the longitudinal variability in skin reactivity, and most studies have concluded that seasonal changes in exposure to environmental allergens are paralleled by a change in skin reactivity. Our trial investigated the relationship between variations in skin reactivity and seasonal exposure to allergens in sensitized subjects, by use of a sensitive method-

Widespread male sterility and trioecy in androdioecious Mercurialis annua: Its distribution, genetic basis, and estimates of morph-specific fitness components.

PREMISE: Angiosperms range in sexual system from hermaphroditism through gynodioecy and androdioecy to dioecy. Trioecy, where females and males coexist with hermaphrodites, is rare. Recently, trioecy was documented in hexaploid populations of the wind-pollinated herb Mercurialis annua in Spain. METHODS: We surveyed the frequency of males, hermaphrodites, and females in M. annua across its distribution in the Iberian Peninsula, tracked sex-ratio variation in several populations over consecutive generations, and assessed evidence for pollen limitation. In a common garden, we estimated male, fem

Exposure to pollen-bound pesticide mixtures induces longer-lived but less efficient honey bees.

Due to the widespread use of pesticides and their persistence in the environment, non-target organisms are chronically exposed to mixtures of toxic residues. Fungicides, herbicides and insecticides are all found at low doses in the diet of pollinators such as honey bees, but due to the lack of data on the toxicological effects of these mixtures, determining their risk is difficult to assess. We therefore developed a study combining the identification of common pollen-bound pesticide mixtures associated with poor colony development and tested their effects on bee behavior and physiology. We exp

The behavioral ecology of nectar robbing: why be tactic constant?

How do animals forage for variable food resources? For animals foraging at flowers, floral constancy has provided a framework for understanding why organisms visit some flowers while bypassing others. We extend this framework to the flower-handling tactics that visitors employ. Nectar robbers remove nectar through holes bitten in flowers, often without pollinating. Many foragers can switch between robbing and visiting flowers legitimately to gain access to nectar. We document that even though individuals can switch foraging tactics, they often do not. We explore whether individuals exhibit con

Inducing triploids and tetraploids with high temperatures in Populus sect. Tacamahaca.

This study is the first to report that triploids and tetraploids have been successfully produced through embryo sac and zygotic embryo chromosome doubling with high temperatures in P. simonii Carr. and its hybrid. A new synthetic polyploid induced by hybridization with unreduced gametes and heterozygotic embryo chromosome doubling can effectively combine polyploidy and heterosis, which can provide two major breeding advantages. In Populus, successfully creating and cultivating new polyploid varieties have economic and ecological production value. This was the first successful study in which em

Evidence for early intracellular accumulation of volatile compounds during spadix development in Arum italicum L. and preliminary data on some tropical Aroids.

Staining and histochemistry of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were performed at different inflorescence developmental stages on nine aroid species; one temperate, Arum italicum and eight tropical from the genera Caladium, Dieffenbachia and Philodendron. Moreover, a qualitative and quantitative analysis of VOCs constituting the scent of A. italicum, depending on the stage of development of inflorescences was also conducted. In all nine species, vesicles were observed in the conical cells of either the appendix or the stamens (thecae) and the staminodes. VOCs were localised in intracellular v

Longitudinal monitoring of honey bee colonies reveals dynamic nature of virus abundance and indicates a negative impact of Lake Sinai virus 2 on colony health.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are important pollinators of plants, including those that produce nut, fruit, and vegetable crops. Therefore, high annual losses of managed honey bee colonies in the United States and many other countries threaten global agriculture. Honey bee colony deaths have been associated with multiple abiotic and biotic factors, including pathogens, but the impact of virus infections on honey bee colony population size and survival are not well understood. To further investigate seasonal patterns of pathogen presence and abundance and the impact of viruses on honey bee colony

Cognitive effects of chlorantraniliprole alone or in mixture with a pyrethroid in honey bees.

Chlorantraniliprole is a diamide insecticide targeting insect ryanodine receptors, which are involved in intracellular calcium release in neurons and muscles. In turn, this calcium release triggers neurotransmitter exocytosis and muscle contraction. Despite the presence of these receptors within neurons, possible effects of this insecticide on cognitive function have not been addressed yet. Honey bees are vital pollinators and serve as a valuable model for studying insect cognition, through the use of appetitive learning. Here, we assessed the sublethal effects of chlorantraniliprole on bees'

Commercial Product Based on Metarhizium Anisopliae Affects Survival, Midgut Morphology, and Behavior in the Stingless Bee Scaptotrigona depilis (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Brazilian social stingless bees are important pollinators and producers of honey, wax, royal jelly, propolis, and other products. These species are experiencing a population decline, attributed to different factors, such as the excessive use of pesticides. Biological control has been proposed as an alternative to chemical control, relying on the use of natural enemies to manage pests, including microorganisms such as entomopathogenic fungi. However, little is known about the effects of these agents on stingless bees. Therefore, this research evaluated the effect of the commercial bioproduct Me

Multisystem effects of ready-mix insecticides on stingless bee Melipona scutellaris Latreille (Hymenoptera: Meliponini).

Melipona scutellaris, a generalist Brazilian stingless bee, is considered a key pollinator of natural vegetation and cultivated plants. Ready-mix insecticides are usually formulated with two active ingredients and have been used to control the most problematic pests but most likely have adverse effects, such as harming non-target insects. Therefore, we assessed the effects of chronic exposure to residual concentrations of five ready-mix insecticides, acetamiprid + bifenthrin, chlorantraniliprole + abamectin, chlorantraniliprole + lambda-cyhalothrin, thiamethoxam + chlorantraniliprole, and thia

Floral Biology, Breeding System and Conservation Implications for the Azorean Endemic Azorina vidalii (Campanulaceae).

This study investigates the seasonal and floral phenology, breeding strategies, and floral morphology of Azorina vidalii, an Azorean endemic Campanulaceae with hermaphroditic, protandrous flowers, dichogamy and secondary pollen presentation. Seasonal phenology was recorded in four field populations and floral phenology in a garden population. Reproductive strategies were assessed via controlled hand pollinations in one field population. Floral morphometrics were analysed using 23 floral and five pollen traits from 121 flowers across fourteen populations throughout the Azores archipelago. Non-p

A Simple and User-Friendly Method for High-Quality Preparation of Pollen Grains for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

Pollen is becoming an increasingly important subject for molecular researchers in genetic engineering, plant breeding, and environmental monitoring. To broaden the scope of these studies, it is essential to develop accessible methods for scientists who are not specialized in palynology. The article presents a simplified technical procedure for preparing pollen grains for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The protocol is convenient for any molecular laboratory due to its small set of reagents, ease of execution, low cost, does not require special equipment, and takes only one hour to complete

A review of the potential impacts of coastal mosquito control programs on Australian Stingless Bees (Apidae, Meliponini)-likely exposure pathways and lessons learned from studies on honey bees.

The impact of the programmatic use of larvicides for mosquito control on native stingless bees (e.g., Apidae, Meliponini) is a growing concern in Australia due to heightened conservation awareness and the growth of hobbyist stingless bee keeping. In Australia, the two most widely used mosquito larvicides are the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) and the insect hormone mimic methoprene (as S-methoprene). Each has a unique mode of action that could present a risk to stingless bees and other pollinators. Herein, we review the potential impacts of these larvicides on native A

Microplastic Polystyrene Ingestion Promotes the Susceptibility of Honeybee to Viral Infection.

Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging threat to ecological conservation and biodiversity; however, little is known of the types and possible impacts of MPs in pollinators. To examine whether MPs were present in honeybees, we analyzed the honeybee samples collected in fields from six provinces in China. Four types MPs were identified in honeybee including polystyrene (PS) by Raman spectroscopic analysis, and these plastic polymers were detected in 66.7% bee samples. Then, we assessed the physical and biological impacts of PS of three sizes (0.5, 5, and 50 μm) on bees for 21 days. Next, we measure

Hygienic food to reduce pathogen risk to bumblebees.

Bumblebees are ecologically and economically important pollinators, and the value of bumblebees for crop pollination has led to the commercial production and exportation/importation of colonies on a global scale. Commercially produced bumblebee colonies can carry with them infectious parasites, which can both reduce the health of the colonies and spillover to wild bees, with potentially serious consequences. The presence of parasites in commercially produced bumblebee colonies is in part because colonies are reared on pollen collected from honey bees, which often contains a diversity of microb

Improving Mitochondrial Function Protects Bumblebees from Neonicotinoid Pesticides.

Global pollination is threatened by declining insect pollinator populations that may be linked to neonicotinoid pesticide use. Neonicotinoids over stimulate neurons and depolarize their mitochondria, producing immobility and death. However, mitochondrial function can be improved by near infrared light absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondrial respiration. In flies, daily exposure to 670nm light throughout life increases average lifespan and aged mobility, and reduces systemic inflammation. Here we treat bumble bees with Imidacloprid a common neonicotinoid. This undermined ATP and rapid

Analyses of avocado (Persea americana) nectar properties and their perception by honey bees (Apis mellifera).

Honey bees are important avocado pollinators. However, due to the low attractiveness of flowers, pollination is often inadequate. Previous work has revealed that avocado honey is relatively unattractive to honey bees when compared with honey from competing flowers. We characterized avocado honey and nectar with respect to their odor, color, and composition of sugars, phenolic compounds, and minerals. Furthermore, we tested how honey bees perceive these parameters, using the proboscis extension response bioassay and preference experiments with free-flying bees. Naïve bees were indifferent to od

Non-Target Arthropod Community Variation Associated with Abamectin Trunk-Injection History in a Pinus massoniana Plantation.

Abamectin trunk injection is used to control pine wilt disease, but field evidence linking injection history to non-target arthropod communities is limited. We compared uninjected plots with plots injected once in March 2024 (ATI1) or March 2022 (ATI3) in a Pinus massoniana plantation in the Qinling-Daba Mountains. Three plots per history were sampled in July, September, and November 2025. Morphological identification and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I metabarcoding characterized soil-associated arthropods and aboveground Hymenoptera; feeding guilds were assigned at the family level. Continuous Non-Invasive Monitoring of Hive Entrance Activity Reveals Honey Bee Colony Dynamics.

Honey bees are essential pollinators and ecological indicators, yet conventional monitoring approaches remain labor-intensive and limit the assessment of colony dynamics across biologically relevant time scales. Hive entrance activity, defined as the movement of bees entering and leaving the hive, serves as a direct proxy for foraging effort, resource availability, and colony condition. However, manual observation is restricted in duration and resolution, constraining continuous evaluation of colony responses to environmental change. In this study, a non-invasive automated monitoring framework

Tracking Microbiome Composition and Stability Across Indian Social Honeybees Foraging in a Homogeneous Mustard Crop Landscape.

Microbial communities are essential for host health and ecosystem stability. However, whether host identity or shared foraging resources shapes microbiome structure among co-occurring species remains poorly understood. We studied bacterial and fungal communities of four Indian honeybee species in a mustard monoculture resource condition, integrating behavioural observation-based pollinator data with microbial co-occurrence networks derived from metabarcoding. Microbiome composition was more strongly associated with host identity rather than with foraging behaviour, bee abundance, or landscape
