Patterns of organization of comments on the corticopontine projection in the cat with the pontocerebellar projection.

Following lesions of various parts of the cat cerebral cortex, the distribution of degenerating fibers in the pontine nuclei was mapped in drawings of serial transverse and horizontal sections of Fink and Heimer. All parts of the cerebrum give rise to the corticopontine fibers and each functionally uniform area has its particular projection zones in the pons. Thus, it has been shown that the pontine projection zones from the sensorimotor, auditory, orbital, cingulate and "association" cortices are arranged in longitudinal columns throughout the pons, mostly in well delimited columns, while tho

Clinics in diagnostic imaging (191). Multiple system atrophy-cerebellar type (MSA-C).

A 49-year-old Chinese man was evaluated for progressive uncoordinated movements, dysphagia and urinary symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a cruciform pattern of T2-weighted hyperintensity within the pons and selective atrophy of the cerebellar hemispheres and pons. The clinical history and radiological findings were consistent with a diagnosis of multiple system atrophy-cerebellar type. This article discussed the background, proposed mechanisms, diagnosis, radiological characteristics, prognosis and management of multiple system atrophy-cerebellar type.

Contralateral abolition of essential tremor following a pontine stroke.

A 90-year-old man with a longstanding bilateral essential tremor presented with right-sided weakness of sudden onset. The CT scan of the brain showed a hypodense area in the left side of the pons consistent with an infarction. The paralysis disappeared without recurrence of the tremor on the right, but the tremor persisted on the left. It is likely that the fronto-rubro-spinal pathway had been interrupted at the level of the pons abolishing the tremor on the right side.

Intrinsic circuitry of the rhombicbrain (central nervous system's intermediate sector) in a mammal.

The rhombicbrain (rhombencephalon or intermediate sector) is the vertebrate central nervous system part between the forebrain-midbrain (rostral sector) and spinal cord (caudal sector), and it has three main divisions: pons, cerebellum, and medulla. Using a data-driven approach, here we examine intrinsic rhombicbrain (intrarhombicbrain) network architecture that in rat consists of 52,670 possible axonal connections between 230 gray matter regions (115 bilaterally symmetrical pairs). Our analysis indicates that only 8,089 (15.4%) of these connections exist. Multiresolution consensus cluster anal

[Concerning the significance of paraoxonase-1 and SR-B1 genes in atherosclerosis].

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is an independent protective factor against cardiovascular disease. The enzyme paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) contributes to the anti-atherogenic effects of HDL. In vitro studies have demonstrated that paraoxonase's substrates are highly heterogeneous and that some contribute to the development of atherosclerotic lesions. The atheroprotective role of PON-1 was established in genetically engineered animal models. In humans, the PON-1 Gln192Arg and Met55Leu polymorphisms appear to be associated with increased susceptibility to cardiovascular disease and with different PON-1

The integrated genomic and epigenomic landscape of brainstem glioma.

Brainstem gliomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors that encompass both benign tumors cured with surgical resection and highly lethal cancers with no efficacious therapies. We perform a comprehensive study incorporating epigenetic and genomic analyses on a large cohort of brainstem gliomas, including Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas. Here we report, from DNA methylation data, distinct clusters termed H3-Pons, H3-Medulla, IDH, and PA-like, each associated with unique genomic and clinical profiles. The majority of tumors within H3-Pons and-H3-Medulla harbors H3F3A mutations but shows distinct

Clinicoradiological aspects of pontine tegmental cap dysplasia: Case report of a rare hindbrain malformation.

Malformations involving the brainstem are very rare and present with a varied spectrum of clinical symptoms due to multiple cranial nerve palsies and pyramidal tract involvement. Of these, pontine tegmental cap dysplasia is a very unusual malformation, characterized by ventral pons hypoplasia and an ectopic dorsal band of tissue, projecting into the fourth ventricle, from dorsal pontine tegmentum. A 4-year-old male child, presenting with left facial nerve palsy, revealed hypoplastic ventral pons and an ectopic structure on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The ectopic structure was isointense

Changes in Noradrenergic Synthesis and Dopamine Beta-Hydroxylase Activity in Response to Oxidative Stress after Iron-induced Brain Injury.

Noradrenaline (NA) levels are altered during the first hours and several days after cortical injury. NA modulates motor functional recovery. The present study investigated whether iron-induced cortical injury modulated noradrenergic synthesis and dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) activity in response to oxidative stress in the brain cortex, pons and cerebellum of the rat. Seventy-eight rats were divided into two groups: (a) the sham group, which received an intracortical injection of a vehicle solution; and (b) the injured group, which received an intracortical injection of ferrous chloride. MR imaging-based volumetry in patients with early-treated phenylketonuria.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our purpose was to specify the most severely affected brain structures in early treated phenylketonuria regarding volume loss and establish possible correlations between volume loss and plasma levels of phenylalanine (Phe). METHODS: In 31 patients with early treated phenylketonuria and in 27 healthy volunteers, we acquired volumetric MR imaging data. Serum Phe concentrations at different times were measured as well. Semiautomatic volumetric postprocessing of the cerebellum, cerebrum (supratentorial brain tissue), hippocampus, intracranial volume, lateral ventricles, nu

What Time Is It? It Is 8 and 1/2 Time: A Rare Case of Ischemic Stroke Consistent With Eight-and-a-Half Syndrome.

Eight-and-a-half syndrome is a rare neuro-ophthalmic syndrome characterized by conjugate horizontal gaze palsy, ipsilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and ipsilateral facial nerve palsy. It results from a lesion affecting the paramedian pontine reticular formation, the medial longitudinal fasciculus, and the abducens nucleus of the same side, at the level of the lower pons. We present a case of a 49-year-old man with 2-week diplopia and 3-day right-sided facial droop, drooling, and dysarthria. CT angiography of the head and neck revealed atherosclerotic disease, with decreased caliber of th

Transient burning pain in the ipsilateral orbit as an initial manifestation of dorsal pontine hemorrhage: case report.

A 45-year-old man with a past history of hypertension and hyperlipidemia presented with right dorsal pontine hemorrhage manifesting as transient burning pain in the right orbital region, followed by numbness and mild weakness of the left side of the body. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a hyperintense lesion in the right dorsal pons on T(1)-weighted and T(2)-weighted images, but no other abnormalities suggesting vascular lesions in the midbrain, medulla, cerebellum, or cerebrum. These findings were consistent with the subacute stage of small pontine hemorrhage. He was treated to decrease his

Clinical approach to brainstem lesions.

The brainstem consists of the midbrain, pons, and medulla. The cerebellum is attached to the dorsal surface of the pons and upper medulla. The brainstem contains 9 of the 12 cranial nerves and is crossed by ascending, descending, and cerebellar pathways and their nuclei as well as the reticular formation. Numerous and rare crossed brainstem syndromes have been described in recent years, many of them without clinical significance. The aim of this article is to provide a brief clinical description of some conditions affecting the brainstem.

Orthostatic hypotension with brainstem tumors.

Three patients with brainstem tumors had orthostatic hypotension as the major presenting manifestation. Two patients had primary tumors that involved the dorsal medulla, pons, and rostral spinal cord; one was a malignant astrocytoma and the other a hemangioblastoma. The third patient had an oat cell carcinoma of the lung with subependymal spread to the medulla, pons, hypothalamus, and thalamus. Evaluation of baroreceptor function in the patient with the malignant astrocytoma showed a defect in the efferent sympathetic limb of the baroreceptor reflex arc.

Synergistic effects of BuChE non-UU phenotype and paraoxonase (PON1) 55 M allele on the risk of systemic lupus erythematosus: influence on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism and oxidative stress, preliminary report.

There is some evidence indicating lipid peroxidation can affect progression of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and glomerulonephritis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Human butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) and paraoxonase-1 (PON1) are two major bioscavenger enzymes that are associated with inflammation, oxidative stress and lipid metabolism. Hyperlipidemia, increase in lipid oxidation reactions and defects in antioxidant status may lead to increased oxidative stress and high frequency of CVDs in SLE. It has also been suggested that deficiency in the function of the

The neurobiology of sleep.

The neurobiology of sleep and narcolepsy is reviewed. Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep is generated by neurons in the preoptic region of the hypothalamus and adjacent basal forebrain. Lesions in these regions cause insomnia. Stimulation of these regions rapidly produces sleep onset. The key brain structure for generating REM sleep is the pons and adjacent portions of the midbrain. Damage to the pons and/or caudal midbrain can cause abnormalities in REM sleep. The persistent sleepiness of narcolepsy is a result of a loss of hypocretin function.

A small pontine infarct on DWI as a lesion responsible for wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia syndrome.

A 64-year-old man presented with alternating exotropia and bilateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) syndrome known as wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (WEBINO) syndrome. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed a small localized lesion in the median dorsal pons, and high-resolution T2-weighted imaging revealed slight left deviation of the lesion. A small penetrating artery was assumed to be occluded at the level of the MLF decussation. The median dorsal pons appears to be a location for the lesions causing WEBINO syndrome.

Ipsilateral disturbance of taste due to pontine haemorrhage.

A patient with haemorrhage in the right tegmentum of the pons demonstrated ipsilateral disturbance of taste on both the anterior two-thirds and posterior one-third of the tongue. The contralateral medial lemniscus was not disturbed, contrary to the early descriptions that the secondary gustatory neurons from the nucleus of the solitary tract cross and turn upwards in the pons through the contralateral medial lemniscus. This finding would accord with the concept of the pontine taste area which receives ipsilaterally the secondary gustatory neurons from the anterior pole of the nucleus of the so
