Risk factors for retinal detachment after cataract surgery. A population-based case-control study.

PURPOSE: Previous analyses of Medicare claims data, as well as clinical series, have suggested that performance of neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy after extracapsular cataract surgery increases significantly the risk of retinal detachment. However, methodologic problems with previous research limit the strength of conclusions that can be drawn from these earlier studies. This study was designed to resolve those methodological limitations while using a population-based approach for assessment of the independent association between the performance of Nd:YAG laser posterior cap

Risk factors for fractures of the distal forearm: a population-based case-control study.

To evaluate the risk factors for early osteoporosis in consecutive patients with fracture of the distal forearm, a population-based case-control study was carried out using postal questionnaires supplemented by interviews when necessary. All men and women between the ages of 40 and 80 years who were resident in the County of Uppsala (population 265,000) and who sustained a fracture of the distal forearm during a defined 12-month period were initially included. Of 427 cases, 385 (90.2%) replied. Those with previous fragility fractures were excluded, leaving 367 patients in the study (mean age 6

Risk factors for absence seizures: a population-based case-control study in Rochester, Minnesota.

To our knowledge, this is the first population-based case-control study of risk factors for absence seizures (AS). Diagnosis of AS was based on clinical criteria. The complete medical history of potential cases, available through the records-linkage system for residents of Rochester, MN, was independently reviewed by three neurologists who agreed upon the diagnosis. All AS patients who were residents of Rochester at time of diagnosis between 1935 and 1979, and who were born in this community, were included (N = 30). Two population controls (born in Rochester) were matched to each patient, and

The population biology and control of Ascaris lumbricoides in a rural community in Iran.

Adults of Ascaris lumbricoides were recovered from 252 persons in the village of Jazin near Esfahan, Iran after treatment with pyrantel pamoate. This horizontal study provides information on age-specific prevalence rates, intensities of infection, frequency distributions, sex ratios and eggs per gram of stool at different parasite intensities. Recruitment of A. lumbricoides was then monitored at 7, 30, 60, 90 and 365 days after treatment in 110 persons. A separate sample population was examined at monthly intervals and, in addition, the stool of each member of a nine-person family was examined

An increased risk of reversible dementia may occur after zolpidem derivative use in the elderly population: a population-based case-control study.

We evaluate the effects of zolpidem use to develop dementia or Alzheimer disease from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD).A retrospective population-based nested case-control study. Newly diagnosed dementia patients 65 years and older and controls were sampled. A total of 8406 dementia and 16,812 control subjects were enrolled from Taiwan NHIRD during 2006 to 2010. The relationships between zolpidem use and dementia were measured using odds and adjusted odds ratios. The relationship between the average cumulative doses for zolpidem and dementia was also analyzed.Zolp

Characteristics of Populations Included in Randomized Controlled Trials of Hemodiafiltration and Registry Real-Life Populations: A Systematic Review.

KEY POINTS: Coverage of patient characteristics in existing trials of hemodiafiltration versus hemodialysis seems to be broad but incomplete. Randomized trials of hemodiafiltration versus hemodialysis have been primarily limited to Europe. Inconsistencies between trials and registries support further studies using real-world data to explore applicability of existing evidence. BACKGROUND: Selection criteria in randomized trials (randomized controlled trials [RCTs]) can lead to differences in key characteristics between trial participants and real-life populations. We evaluated reporting of pop

Optimal control of irrupting pest populations in a climate-driven ecosystem.

Irruptions of small consumer populations, driven by pulsed resources, can lead to adverse effects including the decline of indigenous species or increased disease spread. Broad-scale pest management to combat such effects benefits from forecasting of irruptions and an assessment of the optimal control conditions for minimising consumer abundance. We use a climate-based consumer-resource model to predict irruptions of a pest species (Mus musculus) population in response to masting (episodic synchronous seed production) and extend this model to account for broad-scale pest control of mice using

The effectiveness of tobacco control policies on vulnerable populations in the USA: a review.

Despite population-wide efforts to reduce tobacco use, low-income populations in the USA have much higher rates of tobacco use compared with the general population. The principal components of tobacco control policies in the USA include cigarette taxes, clean indoor air laws and comprehensive interventions to increase access to tobacco cessation services. In this review, we describe the effectiveness of these policies and interventions in reducing tobacco use among vulnerable populations, focusing on persons with mental health disorders and substance use disorders, persons who have experienced

Allergy controls the population density of Necator americanus in the small intestine.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nearly 700 million people remain infected with hookworms. Although allergy is intuitively linked to immunity against helminths, few positive examples have been characterized. Larval migration through the lungs has been considered the likely interface at which hookworm attrition occurs. As part of a study evaluating a potential role for hookworms in the modulation of human autoimmunity, we examined parasite migration and intestinal colonization. METHODS: Capsule and conventional endoscopies supplemented the evaluation of healthy volunteers and Crohn's disease patients recent

Vertebral deformities in rheumatoid arthritis: a comparison with population-based controls.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an increased prevalence of osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but the extent of osteoporotic fractures is not clarified. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of vertebral deformities in a representative, population-based cohort of female patients with RA with that in matched controls, and to examine the relationship between deformities and RA, bone mineral density (BMD), and corticosteroid use. METHODS: Female patients (mean age, 63.0 years; range, 50.7-73.6 years) were recruited from a county register of patients with RA. Populat

The role of effective diagnosis for the control of gonorrhoea in high prevalence populations.

Gonorrhoea in the UK is now a highly focal problem that is localized to certain inner city areas where it presents a significant public health concern. However, the majority of men and a proportion of women infested with Neisseria gonorrhoeae do not experience symptoms of sufficient intensity to prompt them to seek medical advice and the current strategy of treating symptomatic individuals in specialist clinics with subsequent tracing of sexual partners is therefore failing to control the spread of infection in these areas. One method for addressing this problem would be the extension of effec

Age-targeted chemotherapy for control of urinary schistosomiasis in endemic populations.

Severity of urinary tract morbidity increases with intensity and duration of Schistosoma haematobium infection. We assessed the ability of yearly drug therapy to control infection intensity and reduce S. haematobium-associated disease in children 5-21 years old in an endemic area of Kenya. In year 1, therapy resulted in reduced prevalence (66% to 22%, P < 0.001) and intensity of S. haematobium infection (20 to 2 eggs/10 mL urine), with corresponding reductions in the prevalence of hematuria (52% to 19%, P < 0.001). There was not, however, a significant first-year effect on prevalence of urinar

[Perspectives of the control of Opisthorchis invasion by the method of treating the molluskan population].

Sanitation of the mollusk population with highly effective cercaricide preparations can be used for the control of opisthorchosous infection. Low concentrations of molluskocides which are sublethal for non-infected mollusks have turned to be lethal for hyperinfected individuals. All tested molluskocides display a cercaricide effect in concentrations which are considerably lower than molluskocide ones. Low concentrations of cercaricides are toxic both for cercariae and parthenites from the liver of mollusks and for freely swimming cercariae. Disastrously affecting the freely swimming cercariae

Epidemiology and control strategies for tuberculosis in countries with the largest prison populations.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease, and its control is considered a challenge, especially among vulnerable populations such as prisoners. The occurrence of TB in prisons is an alarming public health problem in many countries. This integrative review aims to describe the epidemiology of TB and control strategies for this disease in countries with the largest prison populations. Studies have shown that it is essential to know the prevalence of TB in prisons of each country. This is because it can serve as an indication of the need for action in prisons to reduce TB rates, includin

A preoptic neuronal population controls fever and appetite during sickness.

During infection, animals exhibit adaptive changes in physiology and behaviour aimed at increasing survival. Although many causes of infection exist, they trigger similar stereotyped symptoms such as fever, warmth-seeking, loss of appetite and fatigue1,2. Yet exactly how the nervous system alters body temperature and triggers sickness behaviours to coordinate responses to infection remains unknown. Here we identify a previously uncharacterized population of neurons in the ventral medial preoptic area (VMPO) of the hypothalamus that are activated after sickness induced by lipopolysaccharide (LP

Impact of an integrated control campaign on tsetse populations in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies are the sole vectors of human and animal trypanosomosis. In Burkina Faso, a project aiming to create zones free of tsetse flies and trypanosomosis was executed from June 2006 to December 2013. After the determination of tsetse distribution in the intervention area from December 2007 to November 2008, the control campaign was launched in November 2009 and ended in December 2013. The goal was to eliminate tsetse flies from 40,000 km2 of area, through an integrated control campaign including insecticide targets, traps and cattle, sequential aerial treatment (SAT) and the

Estimating the Size of Dog Populations in Tanzania to Inform Rabies Control.

Estimates of dog population sizes are a prerequisite for delivering effective canine rabies control. However, dog population sizes are generally unknown in most rabies-endemic areas. Several approaches have been used to estimate dog populations but without rigorous evaluation. We compare post-vaccination transects, household surveys, and school-based surveys to determine which most precisely estimates dog population sizes. These methods were implemented across 28 districts in southeast Tanzania, in conjunction with mass dog vaccinations, covering a range of settings, livelihoods, and religious

Zic2 Controls the Migration of Specific Neuronal Populations in the Developing Forebrain.

UNLABELLED: Human mutations in ZIC2 have been identified in patients with holoprosencephaly and schizophrenia. Similarly, Zic2 mutant mice exhibit holoprosencephaly in homozygosis and behavioral and morphological schizophrenic phenotypes associated with forebrain defects in heterozygosis. Despite the devastating effects of mutations in Zic2, the cellular and molecular mechanisms that provoke Zic2-deficiency phenotypes are yet unclear. Here, we report a novel role for this transcription factor in the migration of three different types of forebrain neurons: the Cajal-Retzius cells that populate
