Vision shapes neural maps of space through an ancient midbrain pathway.

Mammals rely on their senses to establish their position in space. Neural activity in the hippocampus maps position, yet how sensory signals reach the hippocampus remains poorly understood. Here we uncover the visual pathways informing spatial maps in the mouse hippocampus. Hippocampal activity in mice traversing a track in alternating periods of light and darkness revealed two distinct maps, one in light and one in dark. Surprisingly, distinct maps persisted following bilateral ablations of primary visual cortex, indicating that visual signals still reach the hippocampus. Conversely, blocking

Sensory experience during locomotion promotes recovery of function in adult visual cortex.

Recovery from sensory deprivation is slow and incomplete in adult visual cortex. In this study, we show that visual stimulation during locomotion, which increases the gain of visual responses in primary visual cortex, dramatically enhances recovery in the mouse. Excitatory neurons regained normal levels of response, while narrow-spiking (inhibitory) neurons remained less active. Visual stimulation or locomotion alone did not enhance recovery. Responses to the particular visual stimuli viewed by the animal during locomotion recovered, while those to another normally effective stimulus did not,

Reading into neuronal oscillations in the visual system: implications for developmental dyslexia.

While phonological impairments are common in developmental dyslexia, there has recently been much debate as to whether there is a causal link between the phonological difficulties and the reading problem. An alternative suggestion has been gaining ground that the core deficit in dyslexia is in visual attentional mechanisms. If so, the visual aetiology may be at any of a number of sites along the afferent magnocellular pathway or in the dorsal cortical stream that are all essential for a visuo-spatial attentional feedback to the primary visual cortex. It has been suggested that the same circuit

Quantitative functional MR imaging of the visual cortex at 1.5 T as a function of luminance contrast in healthy volunteers and patients with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), a few preliminary functional MR (fMR) imaging studies of the visual cortex reveal information about magnitude differences between healthy individuals and patients with MS at only a single luminance level. We therefore investigated whether varying luminance contrast levels can help uncover subtle changes in fMR imaging characteristics of the visual cortex in healthy volunteers and patients with MS. METHODS: Blood oxygenation level-dependent fMR imaging signal changes in the primary visual cortex were examined as a function of lu

Cortical thickness in adults with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital malformation that can occur in isolation or in association with other neurological conditions. Although the behavioral manifestations associated with AgCC have been widely studied, the effects of complete absence of the corpus callosum (CC) on cerebral cortex anatomy are still not completely understood. In this study, cortical thickness in adults with complete AgCC was compared to a group of healthy controls. Results showed highly variable patterns of cortical thickness in AgCC individuals, with few areas showing significant and consistent

Posterior parietal cortex.

The posterior parietal cortex, along with temporal and prefrontal cortices, is one of the three major associative regions in the cortex of the mammalian brain. It is situated between the visual cortex at the caudal pole of the brain and the somatosensory cortex just behind the central sulcus. Technically, any cortex covered by the parietal bone is referred to as 'parietal cortex', but the posterior sector, formally referred to as posterior parietal cortex, is indeed its own functional section of cortex, consisting of Brodmann's areas 5, 7, 39, and 40 in humans, areas 5 and 7 in macaques, and a

Magnetoencephalographic fields from patients with spontaneous and induced migraine aura.

We investigate and characterize the magnetoencephalographic waveforms from patients during spontaneous and visually induced migraine aura. Direct current neuromagnetic fields were measured during spontaneous onset of migraine auras in 4 migraine patients, and compared with recordings from 8 migraine-with-aura patients and 6 normal controls during visual stimulation of the occipital cortex. Complex direct current magnetoencephalographic shifts, similar in waveform, were observed in spontaneous and visually induced migraine patients, but not in controls. Two-dimensional inverse imaging showed mu

Real-time monitoring and regulating auditory cortex alpha activity in patients with chronic tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: Low levels of alpha activity (8-13Hz) mirror a state of enhanced responsiveness, whereas high levels of alpha are a state of reduced responsiveness. Tinnitus is accompanied by reduction of alpha activity in the perisylvian regions compared to normal hearing controls. This reduction might be a key mechanism in the chain of reactions leading to tinnitus. We devised a novel spatial filter as an on-line source monitoring method, which can be used to control alpha activity in the primary auditory cortex. In addition, we designed an innovative experimental procedure to enable suppression

Language networks in anophthalmia: maintained hierarchy of processing in 'visual' cortex.

Imaging studies in blind subjects have consistently shown that sensory and cognitive tasks evoke activity in the occipital cortex, which is normally visual. The precise areas involved and degree of activation are dependent upon the cause and age of onset of blindness. Here, we investigated the cortical language network at rest and during an auditory covert naming task in five bilaterally anophthalmic subjects, who have never received visual input. When listening to auditory definitions and covertly retrieving words, these subjects activated lateral occipital cortex bilaterally in addition to t

When apperceptive agnosia is explained by a deficit of primary visual processing.

Visual agnosia is a deficit in shape perception, affecting figure, object, face and letter recognition. Agnosia is usually attributed to lesions to high-order modules of the visual system, which combine visual cues to represent the shape of objects. However, most of previously reported agnosia cases presented visual field (VF) defects and poor primary visual processing. The present case-study aims to verify whether form agnosia could be explained by a deficit in basic visual functions, rather that by a deficit in high-order shape recognition. Patient SDV suffered a bilateral lesion of the occi

Dynamic changes in spatial representation within the posterior parietal cortex in response to visuomotor adaptation.

Recent studies used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) population receptive field (pRF) mapping to demonstrate that retinotopic organization extends from the primary visual cortex to ventral and dorsal visual pathways, by quantifying visual field maps, receptive field size, and laterality throughout multiple areas. Visuospatial representation in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is modulated by attentional deployment, raising the question of whether spatial representation in the PPC is dynamic and flexible, and whether this flexibility contributes to visuospatial learning. From cortical plasticity to unawareness of visual field defects.

It was long held that, following alterations in sensory input, structural changes in the primary visual cortex take place only in early life, during so-called "critical periods." Recently, however, it has been established that, in adults, cortical maps in the brain are not fixed, and the cortex does not perform stereotyped operations. Instead, neuronal receptive fields in the cortex can reorganize following deactivation or an altered pattern of activation. Plasticity is essential for the normal adjustment of the brain to modifications in the sensory environment, and for improving perceptual sk

Functional relevance of cross-modal plasticity in blind humans.

Functional imaging studies of people who were blind from an early age have revealed that their primary visual cortex can be activated by Braille reading and other tactile discrimination tasks. Other studies have also shown that visual cortical areas can be activated by somatosensory input in blind subjects but not those with sight. The significance of this cross-modal plasticity is unclear, however, as it is not known whether the visual cortex can process somatosensory information in a functionally relevant way. To address this issue, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to disrupt the fu

Deficits in cortical visual function.

Lesions of extrastriate cortex cause selective defects in visual function. Damage to portions of the "ventral stream" in medial and inferior occipitotemporal cortex lead to impaired perception of color or various specific visual object recognition defects, such as prospagnosia, the inability to recognize familiar faces, and alexia, the inability to read. The latter must be distinguished from a variety of other reading defects related to primary visual, attentional, linguistic, or ocular motor impairments. Damage to the "dorsal stream" in lateral occipito-temporo-parietal regions impairs visuos

Aphantasia: The science of visual imagery extremes.

Visual imagery allows us to revisit the appearance of things in their absence and to test out virtual combinations of sensory experience. Visual imagery has been linked to many cognitive processes, such as autobiographical and visual working memory. Imagery also plays symptomatic and mechanistic roles in neurologic and mental disorders and is utilized in treatment. A large network of brain activity spanning frontal, parietal, temporal, and visual cortex is involved in generating and maintain images in mind. The ability to visualize has extreme variations, ranging from completely absent (aphant

Cholinergic Potentiation of Restoration of Visual Function after Optic Nerve Damage in Rats.

Enhancing cortical plasticity and brain connectivity may improve residual vision following a visual impairment. Since acetylcholine plays an important role in attention and neuronal plasticity, we explored whether potentiation of the cholinergic transmission has an effect on the visual function restoration. To this end, we evaluated for 4 weeks the effect of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor donepezil on brightness discrimination, visually evoked potentials, and visual cortex reactivity after a bilateral and partial optic nerve crush in adult rats. Donepezil administration enhanced brightness

The blindsight saga.

Blindsight is the ability of patients with clinically blind field defects, caused by damage to the primary visual cortex V, to detect, localise and even discriminate visual stimuli that they deny seeing. Blindsight tells us much about the nature of visual processing in the absence of the primary visual cortex and is a paradigmatic example of implicit knowledge. It has attracted widespread interest and debate amongst philosophers, cognitive neuropsychologists and visual neuroscientists. Its downside is that possible artefacts abound, much more so than with examples of implicit memory or deaf he

Transient activity in the human calcarine cortex during visual-mental imagery: an event-related fMRI study.

Although it is largely accepted that visual-mental imagery and perception draw on many of the same neural structures, the existence and nature of neural processing in the primary visual cortex (or area V1) during visual imagery remains controversial. We tested two general hypotheses: The first was that V1 is activated only when images with many details are formed and used, and the second was that V1 is activated whenever images are formed, even if they are not necessarily used to perform a task. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (ER-fMRI) to detect and characterize th

Morphologic changes in the visual cortex of patients with anisometropic amblyopia: a surface-based morphometry study.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is generally considered a neurodevelopmental disorder that results from abnormal visual experiences in early childhood and may persist to adulthood. The neural basis of amblyopia has been a matter of interest for many decades, but the critical neural processing sites in amblyopia are not entirely understood. Although many functional neuroimaging studies have found abnormal neuronal responses both within and beyond V1, few studies have focused on the neurophysiologic abnormalities in the visual cortex from the viewpoint of potential structural reorganization. In this study
