Biocompatible patterning of proteins on wettability gradient surface by thermo-transfer printing.

We develop a simple and biocompatible method of patterning proteins on a wettability gradient surface by thermo-transfer printing. The wettability gradient is produced on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-modified glass substrate through the temperature gradient during thermo-transfer printing. The water contact angle on the PDMS-modified surface is found to gradually increase along the direction of the temperature gradient from a low to a high temperature region. Based on the wettability gradient, the gradual change in the adsorption and immobilization of proteins (cholera toxin B subunit) is a

Patterned assembly of quantum dots onto surfaces modified with click microcontact printing.

The self-assembly of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) onto a patterned silica surface generated from surface microcontact click printing is presented. The mechanically robust self-assembly process produces patterns of QDs which remain steadfast, even as subsequent reactions are performed on the substrate, demonstrating the utility and ease of this self-assembly process.

Selectively metallized polymeric substrates by microcontact printing an aluminum(III) porphyrin complex.

We report a simple, low-cost method for the fabrication of copper wires and contacts on a wide range of flexible, rigid, and inert polymeric substrates. This method relies on procedures to oxidize the polymeric substrates to form surface-bound carboxylic acid groups. Patterning of an aluminum porphyrin ink using microcontact printing results in the formation of an aluminum porphyrin monolayer that is covalently anchored to the oxidized polymer surface via an aluminum-carboxylate bond. We characterize this monolayer using ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, reflection-absorption infrared sp

Dynamic covalent chemistry enables advanced 3D printing: principles, processability, and functional evolution.

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) has emerged as a transformative technology for the high-precision fabrication of complex geometric structures. However, conventional printable polymers face significant bottlenecks throughout their lifecycle, including weak interlayer bonding during processing, insufficient functionality and tunability during service, and recycling difficulties at the end of life. Incorporating dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) into 3D printing systems offers a solution to these challenges. This review comprehensively summarizes recent research progress on the impact of DCC

Glass Transition of Chiral Hybrid Metal Halides for Self-Supported 3D Printing.

Hybrid metal halides (HMHs) have emerged as promising functional materials owing to their versatile structural tunability and outstanding optoelectronic properties. In particular, chiral HMHs could be endowed with fascinating chiroptoelectronic properties such as circularly polarized light emission, circularly polarized photodetection, and spin regulation. However, the implementation of their practical integrated optoelectronic applications has been mainly restricted to planar thin-film devices due to the poor processability of chiral HMHs for the construction of complex three-dimensional (3D)

Comparison of Virtual and 3D-Printing Methods to Personalize Nasoseptal Flap Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: 3D-printed models can be used to personalize the length of nasoseptal flap (NSF) reconstruction of anterior skull base defects to preserve more anterior nasal septal mucosa. The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation between a previously described 3D-printed model method with an entirely virtual method of personalizing NSF length. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with anterior skull base pathology were included. CT scans were segmented to produce a cavity that would replicate the surgical changes associated with endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery. In 3D-printed

Dispensing highly viscous zeptoliter droplets by nanotip infiltration focused electrohydrodynamic jet printing.

Manipulation and dispensing of droplets with a wide range of viscosities on the micro/nano scale is a key issue in many fields of technology. However, the simple and high-efficiency dispensing of highly viscous droplets down to the zeptoliter scale is still a major challenge. Herein, we propose a nanotip infiltration focused electrohydrodynamic jet (NIFEJ) printing method. This technique uses a solid nanotip rather than a hollow nozzle, so it can dispense a wide range of high viscosity inks without nozzle clogging problems. The ink viscosity range spans six orders of magnitude, from 6.3 × 10-4

Live-Cell Imaging of Microglia in Organotypic Brain Slices Using Microcontact Printing.

Microglia are brain immune cells that phagocytose cell debris and beta-amyloid plaques in patients with Alzheimer's disease. They develop from round amoeboid cells into ramified microglia or large macrophages, which can be studied in three-dimensional organotypic mouse brain slices. In a recent publication, we showed for the first time that we can track GFAP+ astrocytes and laminin+ vessels in organotypic brain slices using live-cell imaging . The aim of the present study was to use microcontact printing on organotypic brain slices to label microglia with Iba1 and CD11b antibodies and visualis

Thermoacoustic Curing Mechanism and Process Optimization in Non-Contact Ultrasonic 3D Printing.

Non-contact ultrasonic three-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional energy-curing manufacturing techniques. However, an insufficient understanding of its underlying curing mechanisms still limits the precise regulation of solidification behavior and stable structural forming. In this context, this work develops a customized ultrasonic printing platform to investigate the thermoacoustic curing behavior of a modified PDMS-based material system. A multiphysics numerical model is established to characterize the focal acoustic pressure, concentrated energy

Seamless Mechanical Programming Through Hybrid Epoxy-Acrylate Printing for Soft-Rigid Robots.

Soft robotic systems require the integration of compliant and stiff components, yet soft-rigid interfaces remain prone to failure under cyclic deformation due to discrete material junctions. In contrast, biological systems rely on functionally graded materials to distribute stress and optimize performance. Here, we implement hybrid epoxy-acrylate printing (HEAP) to create covalently integrated polymer networks with spatially programmed mechanical properties. HEAP is a multi-wavelength 3D printing strategy that enables control over polymer network architecture within a single resin. We achieve

Valorization of 3D printing filament waste into syngas via CO2-assisted pyrolysis.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is adopted in manufacturing field due to its ability to rapidly fabricate complex objects. However, a substantial amount of polymeric waste derived from 3D printing process and its limited recyclability have raised environmental concerns. This study proposes a strategic approach for the valorization of 3D printing waste into pyrolytic gas by employing CO2 as a reaction medium. A commercial 3D printing filament (3DPF) was used as a model compound of 3D printing waste and identified as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) by FT-IR analysis. Thermo-gravimetric ana

Single-Step Extrusion Printing of Microgrooved Annulus Fibrosus Scaffolds via Patterned Nozzles.

Intervertebral disk pathology, including disk herniation and degeneration, is a major contributor to chronic low back pain, and when conservative treatment fails, surgical management often involves discectomy-based procedures that leave residual annulus fibrosus (AF) defects associated with reherniation and progressive degeneration. These limitations have motivated interest in regenerative strategies using biomaterial scaffolds; however, reproducing the hierarchical, angle-ply architecture of the AF remains challenging. Here, we present a single-step extrusion-based 3D-printing approach to fab

3D printing of an optic pathway model from 7T MRI for education.

BACKGROUND: The optic pathway is a complex neural structure responsible for transmitting visual information from the retina to the brain. Traditionally, the optic pathway has been depicted using two-dimensional (2D) illustrations, which, while useful for simplification, can obscure depth, orientation, and connectivity, limiting a full understanding of its three-dimensional (3D) nature which is important for surgical planning and neuroanatomy education. Due to a convergence of advancing technologies in MRI image acquisition, medical CAD and 3D illustration software, as well as 3D printing techn
