Infant Regulatory Problems and Subsequent Behavioral Difficulties: The Mediating Role of Parenting Stress.

Background/Objectives: Infant regulatory problems (RPs) are at risk of persisting and can contribute to later behavioral difficulties. Parenting stress has been identified as a risk factor associated with child RPs, but its mediating role has rarely been investigated in this context. The aim of the study was (1) to investigate whether RP symptoms were related to subsequent infant RP symptoms/toddler behavioral and emotional problems (BEPs) between two pediatric check-ups in the first 3 years of life and (2) to investigate the potential role of parenting stress as a partial mediator in the asso

Executive function's influence on problem behaviors in children with mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has consistently demonstrated an increased prevalence of behavioral problems among children with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, the underlying mechanisms and contributing factors, particularly the role of executive function, remain insufficiently understood and require further investigation. METHODS: We conducted moderation analyses using data on executive function and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) from a sample of 10,805 children aged 9-11 years old participating in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study to examine the impact

Oral health and behavioral problems in children living with and without HIV in South Africa.

The prevalence of behavioral problems in children and adolescents living with HIV is high. We investigate associations between oral microbiota and behavioral problems in children living with HIV (CLWH) and children who are HIV-uninfected (CHU). Oral swab samples, assessment of behavioral functioning using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and clinical and social data were collected from 477 CLWH and 123 CHU at two sites in Johannesburg, South Africa. DNA was extracted from oral swab samples and the V4 amplicon of the 16S rRNA gene sequenced. Behavioral problems were more prev

The Impact of Parental Cognitions on Outcomes of Behavioral Parent Training for Children With Conduct Problems.

Despite decades of support for behavioral parent training, studies consistently comprise a proportion of families who do not experience sustained improvement in child conduct problems. Recent innovations to enhance treatment effects use predictors of treatment response to guide efforts to personalize treatment. We investigated whether baseline parental cognitions predicted response to Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in a sample of N = 61 children (M = 4.78 years, SD = 1.23, 74% boys) with conduct problems. Families received PCIT at an Australian urban university-based clinic. Parental

[Behavioral problems in child protection: Understanding and intervening from the concept of complex trauma].

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents supported by child protection services (CPS) represent a population exposed to repeated relational trauma that significantly increases the risk of developing complex trauma characterized by polymorphic symptomatology. The behavioral problems presented by adolescents followed by CPS may fit within this nosographic framework. They can lead to major difficulties in adapting to their environment, especially when the trajectory of polyvictimization is pronounced. Unfortunately, the failure of professionals to recognize this diagnosis remains frequent. As a result, institut

Online Parenting Programs for Children's Behavioral and Emotional Problems: a Network Meta-Analysis.

Online parenting programs to support parents of children with behavioral problems and emotional problems have become widely available in recent years. Research has consistently shown their positive effects on child development, parents' adaptive parenting practices, and parents' mental health. However, knowledge is lacking on which type of content is more suitable to be delivered online. Our work addresses this knowledge gap by conducting traditional and network meta-analyses to improve our understanding of (1) how effective online parenting programs are to improve children's behavior and emot

Profiles of self-regulation and their association with behavior problems among sexually abused children.

This study aimed to delineate profiles of self-regulation among sexually abused children and their association with behavior problems using a person-centered approach. A sample of 223 children aged six to 12, their parents, and teachers were recruited in specialized intervention centers. Latent profile analysis revealed four profiles: (1) Dysregulated, (2) Inhibited, (3) Flexibly Regulated, and (4) Parent Perceived Self-Regulation. Children from the Flexibly Regulated profile showed relatively low behavior problems, and those from the Dysregulated profile were characterized by high behavior pr

Emotional and Behavioral Problems of Children with ASD-The Lessons That We Learned from the Pandemic.

The data available for changes in the behavior and emotional state of children with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) in lockdown situations are controversial and scarce. In our research, we compare results before the first COVID-19 lockdown of 21 children with ASD and 21 typically developing children, four to five years of age with those obtained immediately after. The study attempts to answer the question of whether there are changes in the levels of emotional and behavioral problems in children with ASD after the lockdown and how these new living conditions affect some aspects of their functio

Sleep and behavioral problems in Down syndrome: differences between school age and adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are at risk of developing sleep problems. In spite of the well-established knowledge on the presence of sleep difficulties in DS individuals and the associated emotional and behavioral problems, less is known about the possible differences in the kind of associations between sleep and emotional/behavioral problems across different age ranges. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we included 289 participants with DS aged 6-18 years with the aims to explore differences in the distribution of sleep problems between specific age groups (school age

Sleep disturbances correlate with behavioral problems among individuals with Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome.

Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WSS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutation in KMT2A and characterized by neurodevelopmental delay. This study is the first prospective investigation to examine the sleep and behavioral phenotypes among those with WSS through parent-informant screening inventories. A total of 24 parents of children/adults with WSS (11F, Mean age = 12.71 years, SD = 8.17) completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and 22 of these caregivers also completed the Modified Simonds and Parraga Sleep Questionnaire (MSPSQ). On average, the majority of those with WSS

Separating problem gambling behaviors and negative consequences: Examining the factor structure of the PGSI.

There is some uncertainty on how to best conceptualise and measure problem gambling and debate as to whether it is helpful to differentiate the behavioral features of problematic gambling from the negative consequences of gambling. The current study explores this issue by examining the factor structure of a commonly-used problem gambling measure, the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), as administered to respondents in the 2018 Northern Territory Gambling Prevalence and Wellbeing Survey (n = 3,740 gamblers). Confirmatory factor analyses revealed a two-factor solution offered significant im

Behavioral and mental health problems in adolescents with ADHD: Exploring the role of family resilience.

BACKGROUND: Family resilience and its role in behavioral and mental health problems has not been well documented among U.S. adolescents, especially those with ADHD. METHODS: Using data from the 2016 and 2017 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), we examined associations between family resilience connection index (FRCI) and conduct problems, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse in adolescents with ADHD aged 11-17 (n=4,169). Data were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression and chi-square tests. RESULTS: Adolescents with ADHD who had a lower FRCI score were more likely to ha

Pathways to Adolescent Emotional and Behavioral Problems: An Examination of Maternal Depression and Harsh Parenting.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression is linked with a range of child and adolescent outcomes. Prior research suggests adverse consequences for child and youth development, but less is known about the role of adverse parenting in the pathways from maternal depression to adolescent emotional and behavioral problems. OBJECTIVE: The present study leveraged a large, longitudinal survey of families across the U.S. to investigate whether harsh parenting mediated the links between maternal depression and adolescent delinquency and depression. Siblings as buffers: Social problems and internalizing and externalizing behaviors across early adolescence.

Youth who struggle to maintain positive peer relationships are more likely to display emotional and behavioral problems, particularly during adolescence. Alternative avenues of social support may buffer against these maladaptive outcomes, particularly sibling relations, as they oftentimes predict adolescent outcomes above and beyond that of parents and peers. The present study examined the role of objective sibling warmth on the longitudinal association between social problems and maladjustment in a sample of 45 adolescent sibling dyads, further testing how effects varied between younger (Mage

Caregiver stress and cultural identity in families of preschoolers with developmental delay and behavioral problems.

INTRODUCTION: Research on families of young children with developmental delay and disruptive behavior problems has failed to examine caregiver stress in the context of cultural factors. METHODS: Families of 3-year-old children with developmental delay and behavior problems were recruited from Early Intervention sites. All caregivers in the current analysis (n = 147) were from immigrant and/or cultural minority backgrounds. Regarding income-to-needs, most families (57.8%) fell into the extreme poverty, poor, or low-income categories. Caregivers reported on their own experiences of acculturatio
