Medical education in Japan.

There are 79 medical schools in Japan--42 national, 8 prefectural (i.e., founded by a local government), and 29 private--representing approximately one school for every 1.6 million people. Undergraduate medical education is six years long, typically consisting of four years of preclinical education and then two years of clinical education. High school graduates are eligible to enter medical school. In 36 schools, college graduates are offered admission, but they account for fewer than 10% of the available positions. There were 46,800 medical students in 2006; 32.8% were women. Since 1990, Japa

The effectiveness of standardized patients as a teaching method for nursing fundamentals.

This study compared two teaching methods and examined their effects on student nurses' clinical competence. A nonequivalent control group was used for this quasi-experimental research, and a posttest design was used to compare the effects on clinical competence. A protocol was developed to include critical behaviors and was used as a checklist for evaluation. The results showed that the standardized patient (SP) method was more effective than the traditional method in helping students: * Identify patient needs. * Perform mouth care, back care, position change, nelaton catheterization, and glyc

Multi-Label Chest X-Ray Image Classification With Single Positive Labels.

Deep learning approaches for multi-label Chest X-ray (CXR) images classification usually require large-scale datasets. However, acquiring such datasets with full annotations is costly, time-consuming, and prone to noisy labels. Therefore, we introduce a weakly supervised learning problem called Single Positive Multi-label Learning (SPML) into CXR images classification (abbreviated as SPML-CXR), in which only one positive label is annotated per image. A simple solution to SPML-CXR problem is to assume that all the unannotated pathological labels are negative, however, it might introduce false n

Forest-EMCBE: an evolutionary ensemble learning algorithm for multiclass diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia using the CBC dataset.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia is crucial for clinical diagnosis and treatment, but traditional methods are time-consuming. The wide application of machine learning techniques in medical diagnosis provides an effective way to solve this problem. However, the complexity of medical datasets and the problem of class imbalance poses serious challenges to classical machine learning algorithms. METHODS: Aiming at the multiclass imbalanced problem in complete blood count (CBC) datasets, this study proposes a novel ensemble learning algorithm, Forest of Evolutionary Multi-Classi

Exploring nursing students' experiences and evaluations of an integrative nursing course: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The integrative nursing framework may enhance both nurses' well-being and patient care. The EU-funded Integrative Nursing Education Series (INES) project developed educational materials to strengthen nursing curricula. A University College in Denmark studied a six-week, 10 ECTS-credits elective integrative nursing course. METHODS: Students' learning experiences were explored using a mixed-methods design. The course was structured around ten selected learning outcomes and included lectures, workshops, self-care exercises, and study-activities led by students. Quantitative data was

Enhancing musculoskeletal examination skills through near-peer teaching: student outcomes and perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are highly prevalent and represent a major burden in Australia and worldwide, yet undergraduate musculoskeletal education remains underrepresented in medical curricula. Near-peer teaching (NPT) has emerged as an effective adjunct to standard teaching, particularly in developing clinical examination skills. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of a near-peer-led, OSCE-style tutorial on medical student performance of the upper limb musculoskeletal examination, and to explore students’ perceptions of its clarity, relevance, and educational value. METHODS:

Implementing team-based sequential simulation for medical students in clinical clerkship: preliminary findings and learning efficiency evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Simulation is a key teaching tool for preparing medical students for clinical practice. Combining team-based learning with sequential simulation enhances problem-solving skills. The Clinical Learning through Extended Immersion in Medical Simulation (CLEIMS), a week-long program integrating simulated interprofessional education, has shown promising results at Griffith University. However, its application outside Australia remains largely unexamined. This study herein evaluates the feasibility of a modified 'CLEIMS' (mCLEIMS), condensed into a 2-day course, for second-year clinical c

Evaluation of a student-led breast cancer awareness campaign as a co-curricular model in pharmacy education: a mixed-methods study in the UAE.

BACKGROUND: Experiential learning in pharmacy education fosters professional competencies through real-world engagement. Despite the high burden of breast cancer in the UAE, adolescents are an under-targeted group in awareness campaigns. Additionally, pharmacy curricula rarely incorporate student-led education initiatives. This study evaluated a student-led breast cancer awareness campaign to explore its educational impact on pharmacy students and short-term knowledge gains among adolescent girls. METHODS: This mixed-methods study, conducted in Dubai, included a qualitative component (two foc

Rethinking active learning in medical education: a comparative study of inquiry-based and team-based learning on student performance and satisfaction.

Active learning fosters critical thinking, autonomy, and deep learning. Whereas team-based learning (TBL) is common, inquiry-based learning (IBL) offers a more student-centered, inquiry-driven alternative. This study aimed to compare the pedagogical effectiveness of IBL versus TBL in medical education, focusing on academic performance, learner engagement, autonomy, and satisfaction. An innovative IBL framework, grounded in the 5E instructional model, was designed and implemented with first-year medical students (n = 548). The intervention involved five interactive clinical cases, each centered

Comparison of academic performance of medical students previously and non-previously graduated from other college courses in a PBL hybrid curriculum.

BACKGROUND: The admission of graduate students (GS) into medical courses is seen as a mechanism that allows students to have better academic performance during the medical course and to become more competent professionals. For these reasons, specific programs for this purpose agree that GS may have better academic performance in medical courses than nongraduate students (NGS). This study aimed to assess whether graduate-entry students (GS) outperformed admission test (AT) and transfer (Tr) students in both the pre-clinical and clinical phases of an undergraduate medical program that adopts a h

Competency-Based Curriculum Development to Meet the Needs of People With Disabilities: A Call to Action.

People with disabilities constitute 22.2% of the population in the United States, and virtually all physicians have people with disabilities in their clinical practice across a wide range of diagnostic groups. However, studies demonstrate that people with disabilities are inadequately served by the health care system, leading to high costs and poor outcomes. The authors argue that one cause of this discrepancy is that medical students receive limited training in the care of people with disabilities and may therefore not be able to adequately meet the competencies that underlie the Core Entrust

Street Medics: An innovative learning opportunity for UK medical students in a primary care outreach setting.

It is well known that recruitment into general practice (GP) is low, particularly in deprived areas. Undergraduate medical students are encouraged to learn about health inequalities. However, teaching on this area has been perceived by some as uninspiring. Innovative teaching opportunities can engage students but more research is needed regarding exposure to deprived inner-city settings. Street Medics is an extra-curricular, educational initiative which enables students to join GPs doing street-outreach work. The aim of the study was to understand what motivates undergraduate medical students t

Diversifying the Midwifery Workforce: Inclusivity, Culturally Sensitive Bridging, and Innovation.

Midwifery educators and regulators in Canada have begun to address diversity, equity, and inclusion in admission processes and program curricula. Populations served by midwives value internationally educated midwives from their countries of origin. The International Midwifery Pre-Registration Program at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, provides assessment, midwifery workplace orientation, and accelerated education for internationally educated midwives on behalf of the regulatory College of Midwives of Ontario. Between 2003 and 2015, midwives from 41 countries participated in the bridgin

Introducing educational theory: vaginal examination.

A vaginal examination (VE) is one of many core skills used in midwifery practice. Despite the controversy of whether it is necessary in all situations, in this article I take the standpoint that it is useful in providing a full clinical picture, especially at times when closer monitoring is recommended. Additionally, if the core skill is misinterpreted, the findings of the VE can distort the true clinical picture. To support the student, subjective assessment and individual learning pathways must be addressed to avoid unnecessary intervention and psychological impairment to the woman. This art

Association Between National Board Dental Examination Part II Scores and Comprehensive Examinations at Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) uses a hybrid problem-based approach to teaching in the predoctoral program. The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is a formative examination designed to assess the performance of students in the problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum. At HSDM three comprehensive examinations with OSCE components are administered during the third and fourth years of clinical training. The National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part II is taken in the final year of the predoctoral program. This study examines the association between the NBDE Part II and

[Does quality assurance modify clinical research, medical progress and medical graduate education in surgery?].

For years, external safeguard of quality has been continuously practised in the field of surgery by several local medical societies. Beside its original task of comparing and reviewing given standards of all surgical departments, other clinically or scientifically relevant questions can be answered on the basis of the enormous numerical data, too. The patient data, available to the chamber of physicians of Westphalia-Lippe, German, are showing that the experiences of clinical research rapidly and almost ubiquitously find their expression in the daily routine work of surgeons. Examples like the

Recalibrating Nursing Education: A Call to Action for Moving from Pedagogy to Andragogy.

AIM: The time has come for nursing education to fully abandon historic pedagogical models and embrace andragogical principles that honor the adult learner's capacity for self-direction and ownership of their professional development. BACKGROUND: Evidence demonstrates that andragogical approaches that emphasize self-direction, experiential learning, and problem-centered education better serve adult learners. Yet formal deep embrace remains uneven across nursing programs globally. METHOD: This analysis examines evidence distinguishing pedagogical from andragogical approaches in nursing educati

Joint statement--Learning disabilities, dyslexia, and vision.

Learning disabilities, including reading disabilities, are commonly diagnosed in children. Their etiologies are multifactorial, reflecting genetic influences and dysfunction of brain systems. Learning disabilities are complex problems that require complex solutions. Early recognition and referral to qualified educational professionals for evidence-based evaluations and treatments seem necessary to achieve the best possible outcome. Most experts believe that dyslexia is a language-based disorder. Vision problems can interfere with the process of learning; however, vision problems are not the ca

Machine learning as an artificial intelligence application in management of chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

Let's review the role of gut microbiota in pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis B infection as addressed in by Zhu et al. Zhu et al used high-throughput technology to characterize the microbial ecosystems, which led to an explosion of various types of molecular profiling data, such as metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metabolomics. To analyze such data, machine learning (ML) algorithms have shown to be useful for identifying key molecular signatures, discovering potential patient stratifications, and, particularly, for generating models that can accurately predict phenotypes. Strong evidence
