The language of chronic pain.

OBJECTIVE: Pain is a universal phenomenon, but is also inherently private and subjective - there's no objective test for its existence. Sufferers rely on language to describe their pain experience. The McGill Pain Questionnaire paved the way for incorporating language into pain assessment and recent research has explored aspects of pain language such as metaphors and grammatical patterns. This study investigated how chronic pain sufferers use language to describe their pain experience. DESIGN: Three focus groups were conducted (N = 16, age 22-74 years, M = 46.6 years) with participants attend

Instructional Practices for Signed Literacy: Observations of 38 Deaf Education Classrooms.

This mixed-methods study examined how signed literacy instruction is currently taught in United States deaf education classrooms (PreK-3) and to what extent that instruction reflects evidence-based composing instruction. Signed literacy instruction means teaching students to view, analyze, and compose texts in a signed language. A composing-forward approach treats students' production of signed texts as the central instructional activity, with language skills taught in service of that composition. This approach is the core of Strategic and Interactive Signing Instruction (SISI), a pedagogical

Language and literacy curriculum supplement for preschoolers who are academically at risk: a feasibility study.

PURPOSE: The potential benefit that a low-cost scripted language and literacy supplemental curriculum titled Read It Again! (RIA; L. M. Justice, A. S. McGinty, A. R. Beckman, & C. R. Kilday, 2006) may have on preschool-age children's skills was explored. RIA was developed to meet the needs of preschool educators who may not have access to current commercially available high-cost language and literacy curricula, which often require ongoing intensive professional development. RIA involves implementing 60 large-group lessons over a 30-week period that feature repeated use of 15 commercial storybo

Are preservice teachers prepared to teach struggling readers?

Reading disabilities such as dyslexia, a specific learning disability that affects an individual's ability to process written language, are estimated to affect 15-20% of the general population. Consequently, elementary school teachers encounter students who struggle with inaccurate or slow reading, poor spelling, poor writing, and other language processing difficulties. However, recent evidence may suggest that teacher preparation programs are not providing preservice teachers with information about basic language constructs and other components related to scientifically based reading instruct

Preterm Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Following Orosensory Entrainment Intervention.

Previous research indicates that the NTrainer, a pressurized pacifier programmed to produce pulsed pneumotactile stimulation during gavage feeds, has been found to facilitate non-nutritive suck development and shorten the length of hospital stay when used in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Four groups of children, including infants of diabetic mothers (IDM), healthy controls (HI), and those with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), or chronic lung disease (CLD), were randomly assigned to an NTrainer therapy or sham 'control' condition when in the NICU. Developing a bilingual mobile dictionary for Indian Sign Language and gathering users experience with SignDict.

Availability of a sign language dictionary is very important for the literacy of deaf people. But the intricacies involved in the representation of the sign language impede attempts at representing it in a printed format. A video-based solution helps to solve this problem. This article discusses the development of a bilingual mobile sign language dictionary which has features for converting camera-captured text into sign language and translating simple sentences from a spoken language into their corresponding signs. Feedback from 2,900 users spread across India who have installed our mobile ap

Abstraction-based temporal data retrieval for a Clinical Data Repository.

Disease and patient care processes often create characteristic states, trends, and temporal patterns in clinical events and observations, called temporal abstractions. Identifying patient populations who share similar abstractions may be useful for clinical research, outcomes studies, and quality assurance. In these settings, abstractions may be specific to a query, and thus allowing the specification of abstractions directly in the query would be desirable. We propose a query language for specifying and retrieving clinical data sets that allows specifying abstractions directly, and automatica

3D-brain 2.0--narrowing the gap between personal computers and high end workstations.

UNLABELLED: Recent advances in personal computer hardware and software have pushed the graphic capacity of these easier to use and, more importantly, cheaper computers to a level approximating the current standard of high end workstations. The interactivity and graphic complexity of a modern PC is rapidly approaching the current standard on Silicon Graphics (although with respect to texture mapping, the SGI is still ahead of the PCs). The modern medical student laboring under increasingly higher demands with respect to versatility, not only in basic science and traditional medical knowledge, i

Graphical knowledge presentation in a MUMPS-based decision-support system.

Conventional knowledge-based medical expert systems present information and elicit responses in the form of text. PHOENIX, a decision-support system designed to help non-radiologist physicians select diagnostic imaging procedures, offers a graphical user interface. The system constructs and displays algorithms, or flowcharts, from the rules in its knowledge base. Users can view the flowcharts and move through them by answering questions at branch points. The system provides detailed textual explanations of the rules and descriptions of the imaging procedures. The system is written in MUMPS, a

A novel method for analyzing long bone diaphyseal cross-sectional geometry. A GNU Octave CSG Toolkit.

The diaphyseal cross-sectional geometric properties of the humerus, femur and tibia have been extensively used for studying their adaptation to mechanical loading. To date common practices for such studies involve either computed tomography or the latex cast method in conjunction with image analysis for calculating such properties. With the advent of modern laser scanning and photogrammetry technologies in biological anthropology, the computation of the cross-sectional geometric properties directly from 3D models is a viable and sensible alternative. Nevertheless, such method has not been prop

Chapter 16: text mining for translational bioinformatics.

Text mining for translational bioinformatics is a new field with tremendous research potential. It is a subfield of biomedical natural language processing that concerns itself directly with the problem of relating basic biomedical research to clinical practice, and vice versa. Applications of text mining fall both into the category of T1 translational research-translating basic science results into new interventions-and T2 translational research, or translational research for public health. Potential use cases include better phenotyping of research subjects, and pharmacogenomic research. A var

Service-oriented subscription management of medical decision data in the intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVES: This paper addresses the design of a platform for the management of medical decision data in the ICU. Whenever new medical data from laboratories or monitors is available or at fixed times, the appropriate medical support services are activated and generate a medical alert or suggestion to the bedside terminal, the physician's PDA, smart phone or mailbox. Since future ICU systems will rely ever more on medical decision support, a generic and flexible subscription platform is of high importance. METHODS: Our platform is designed based on the principles of service-oriented architect
