AIMS: To assess the outcome of a surgical punctal occlusion technique.
METHOD: Prospectively, 11 consecutive patients (26 puncta) with severe dry eyes recalcitrant to maximal medical therapy underwent permanent punctal occlusion at a tertiary eye care centre between January 1999 and December 2000. The epithelium of the punctum and the vertical portion of the canaliculus was removed with a corneal rust ring burr. The bared punctum-canaliculus complex was closed with a 6-0 chromic suture. BACKGROUND: The studies of series of children with erythema nodosum (EN) are limited and mostly retrospective.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the epidemiology, etiology, clinical manifestations, course, and prognosis of EN in children.
METHODS: Thirty-five children with EN (17 boys, 18 girls; mean age, 8.79 years) have been studied. Four excluded children proved, on biopsy, to have leukocytoclastic vasculitis (n = 3) or eosinophilic cellulitis (n = 1).

A group of 102 Mexican Mestizo patients with appropriate clinical features suggestive of primary thrombophilia was prospectively studied. We report the results of a study performed in the thoracic surgery department of Hospital General Universitario of Valencia from October 1989 to December 1996. Of the 621 patients diagnosed of lung cancer during this period, 320 underwent the usual surgical excision, 18 were confirmed histologically as bronchial carcinoid tumors, indicating an incidence of 5.6% of all pulmonary neoplasms resected in our department. BACKGROUND: little is known about the longitudinal course of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and how this differs from Alzheimer's disease (AD).
METHOD: standardized baseline and annual assessments of cognitive and non-cognitive symptoms are reported in a cohort of 72 patients with DLB or AD. AD was diagnosed using the NINCDS ADRDA criteria and DLB was diagnosed with the criteria of McKeith et al. Cognitive assessment was undertaken using the MMSE schedule and operationalized definitions were used to diagnose non-cognitive symptoms.

In a prospective study of bacteremia caused by organisms of the Streptococcus milleri group a total of 32 adult patients were observed over a seven-year period. These patients accounted for 1.6% of all patients diagnosed as having significant bacteremia and 17% of all cases of streptococcal (nonpneumococcal) bacteremia diagnosed during the study period. Cryotherapy has been shown to reduce the unfavourable outcome in retinopathy of prematurity with stage 3 threshold disease by 50%. During the last 3 years 34 patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (W. G.) were treated 37 times with co-trimoxazole (Co-trim). In 10 patients with locoregional disease the progression of W. G. could be stopped in each case. In 27 cases (24 patients) with generalized W. G. in complete remission achieved with cyclophosphamide and prednisolone (Cyc/Pred) a relapse occurred in more than 50% (14/27) of the cases.

A prospective study of acute nephritis in children was conducted at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital, Kubang Kerian between July 1987 and June 1988.
