Hydrogen-Rich Gas Production from Municipal Solid Waste via Integrated Pyrolysis and Catalytic Steam Reforming over Ni/Al2O3 Catalyst.

The transition to a hydrogen-based economy requires efficient and sustainable technologies to convert waste into clean energy carriers. This study investigates the production of hydrogen-rich gas through the integrated pyrolysis steam reforming (PSR) and integrated pyrolysis (PYR) and catalytic steam reforming (PCSR) of real municipal solid waste (MSW). PCSR experiments were conducted in a two-stage series reactor system: an initial pyrolysis stage at 500 °C followed by a catalytic steam reforming stage at 900 °C over a commercial Ni/Al2O3 catalyst (9.8 wt.% Ni). Three real MSW samples from th

Balancing benefits and risks in food waste biochar: Pyrolysis severity effects on contaminant fate, nutrient leaching, and biological safety.

Thermochemical conversion of food waste into biochar offers a compelling circular economy pathway for soil amendment, yet comprehensive safety assessments remain limited. This study assessed the stability, contaminant fate, nutrient leaching, and microbial compatibility of bone and mixed vegetable biochars pyrolyzed at 300-600 °C. Feedstock identity dominated variance in yield, ash, and carbon (η2 = 0.73-0.91), whereas temperature governed the volatile heteroatoms H, O and N (η2 = 0.44-0.74; all p < 0.001). At 600 °C, bone retained higher yield (60.3 ± 0.7 % vs 34.4 ± 0.7 %) and appreciable po

Effect of Natural Zeolite Modification Route on the Catalytic Pyrolysis of Post-Consumer Polystyrene Toward Styrene-Rich Liquid Products.

The catalytic pyrolysis of post-consumer polystyrene (PS) offers a potential route to obtain styrene-rich liquid fractions from plastic waste. In this study, natural zeolites were modified by thermal activation (AT-ZN), acid treatment (AA-ZN), and protonic ion exchange (H-ZN), and their performance was evaluated under different pyrolysis temperatures (400-500 °C), heating rates (10-20 °C min-1), and catalyst loadings (5-10 wt.%). Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that zeolite incorporation shifted the apparent PS degradation profile toward lower temperatures, suggesting that the modified so

Determination of phenylphosphonic acid zinc salt in poly(lactic acid) using thermally assisted methylation pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Biomass-based polymers such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) have attracted much attention, because they are renewable, biocompatible, and nontoxic to the environment and have been used in various fields such as biomedical, agricultural, and food packaging industries. However, one of the common drawbacks of PLA-based materials is their low glass transition temperature in the amorphous state, while adding phenylphosphonic acid zinc salt (PPA-Zn) as a nucleating agent was found to be a promising method to improve the physical property of PLA. On the other hand, degradation of PLA-based materials in th

Mechanisms of Chromium Removal from Water and Soil Using Bioleached Nano Zero-Valent Iron-Mediated Biochar via Co-Pyrolysis.

Biological charcoal loaded with nano zero-valent iron (nZVI@BC) was synthesized using the bioleaching co-pyrolysis method. This study analyzed the formulation sequence of nZVI@BC and its influence on chromium elimination from water and soil, along with the involved mechanisms. The bioleaching method facilitated ionic iron incorporation onto biochar in the form of yellow potassium ferroalum compounds, which were reduced to Fe0 by H2, CO, and CH4 generated during biomass co-pyrolysis. In aqueous conditions, the removal capacity of Cr(VI) by nZVI@BC increased by 72.01% and 66.92% compared to bioc

Combined analyses of hygroscopic properties of organic and inorganic components of three representative black carbon samples recovered from pyrolysis.

Hygroscopicity of black carbon (BC) aerosols is a key factor determining their climate forcing effect and atmospheric lifetime. However, the compositional dependence of BC hygroscopicity is not well understood. Here, a variety of different compositional components were separated from three representative BC samples recovered from pyrolysis (grass and wheat straw derived BC, household soot), including water extracted fraction of BC (WEBC, 9-21 wt%), residue fraction of BC after water extraction (R-WEBC, 79-91 wt%), water extracted minerals (WEM, 9-18 wt%), alkali extracted organic carbon (OCAE,

Enhanced adsorption of aqueous chlorinated aromatic compounds by nitrogen auto-doped biochar produced through pyrolysis of rubber-seed shell.

The adsorption of chlorinated aromatic compounds (CACs) on pristine biochar was often limited. Surface modification can greatly improve the adsorption capacity of biochar. In this work, by pyrolysis activation of rubber-seed shell wastes, nitrogen auto-doped biochar (RSS-NBC) was synthesized and used for purifying CACs-containing wastewater. Systematic characterization results showed that after proper treatment, the as-prepared RSS-NBC had high specific surface area, abundant surface oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups, and nano-scale pore structure. Batch adsorption experiments

Facile Decarbonylation Suppresses the Ortho Effect and Ketene Formation in the Catalytic Pyrolysis of Substituted Benzaldehyde Lignin Model Compounds.

Ketene intermediates lead to branching and lower phenol selectivities in the catalytic pyrolysis of lignin model compounds, which makes understanding their formation mechanism key to enable targeted process optimization. While gas-phase pyrolysis of methoxy- and hydroxy-substituted benzaldehydes favors fulvenone ketene formation, it is unclear if the same reaction pathways dominate in the presence of Brønsted acid sites. Thus, we tested if HZSM-5 produces fulvenone utilizing operando photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy. Hydroxybenzaldehydes undergo acid-catalyzed decarbonylation, v

Steam-mediated evolution of reaction intermediates in catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene: A method to diminish coking and to enhance formation of aromatics.

Catalytic pyrolysis of plastics or biomass inevitably forms coke, while simultaneous feeding steam could diminish coking but dilutes liquid product. Intermittent feeding steam (feeding feedstock or steam in sequence/cycles but not simultaneous) might be a solution. This hypothesis was verified herein by conducting catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene (PE) over Ni/HZSM-5 with no feeding, constant feeding or intermittent feeding of steam at 650-700 °C. The results showed that liquid was the main product (yield: 84 %) with no feeding steam while gas became the main one (yield: 69 %) with constant

Dataset from analytical pyrolysis assays for converting waste tires into valuable chemicals in the presence of noble-metal catalysts.

About 25.7 million tons of waste tires (WT) are discarded each year worldwide causing important environmental, and health problems. This waste is difficult to manage and dispose due to its huge rate of generation and its extremely slow biodegradation. Therefore, many efforts are being made to valorise WTs into a series of marketable products under a circular economy framework. In the attempt to convert WT into higher-value products, thermochemical decomposition by pyrolysis has emerged as a promising process [1]. The pyrolysis is a thermochemical transformation (under an oxygen-depleted atmosp

Dioxin and dibenzofuran like molecular analogues from the pyrolysis of biomass materials-the emerging challenge in bio-oil production.

INTRODUCTION: The aggressive search for renewable energy resources and essential pyrosynthetic compounds has marked an exponential rise in the thermal degradation of biomass materials. Consequently, clean and sustainable transport fuels are increasingly desirable in a highly industrialized economy, for energy security and environmental protection. For this reason, biomass materials have been identified as promising alternatives to fossil fuels despite the challenges resulting from the possible formation of toxic nitrogen-based molecules during biomass degradation. In order to understand the fr

Molecular insights into the effects of pyrolysis temperature on composition and copper binding properties of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter.

Biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM), which has a substantial impact on the environmental behavior of heavy metals, is critical for understanding the environmental efficacy of biochar. Here, we used a suite of advanced spectroscopic and mass spectroscopic methods to investigate the relationship among the pyrolysis temperature of biochar, composition of BDOM, and interactions of BDOM with Cu. The binding affinity of BDOM and Cu showed incredibly increase, with the increasing pyrolysis temperature (300-500 °C) which promoted the release of condensed aromatic compounds and oxygen-conta

Biochar-driven reduction of As(V) and Cr(VI): Effects of pyrolysis temperature and low-molecular-weight organic acids.

Batch experiments were conducted to examine the differential effects of biochar pyrolysis temperature and low-molecular-weight organic acids on the reduction of As(V) and Cr(VI) driven by Pennisetum hydridum biochar. The results showed that pyrolysis temperature significantly affected the reducing strength of the biochar. Biochar produced at 500 °C had a stronger electron-donating capacity than did the biochars produced at 300 and 700 °C. In the co-presence of the biochar and a low-molecular-weight organic acid, arsenic and chromium behaved differently. Oxalic acid and malic acid tended to hav

The effect of different pyrolysis temperatures on the speciation and availability in soil of P in biochar produced from the solid fraction of manure.

Biochar application to agricultural land has been proposed as a means for improving phosphorus (P) availability in soil. The purpose of the current study was to understand how pyrolysis temperature affects P speciation in biochar and how this affects availability of P in the amended soil. Biochar was produced at different temperatures from digestate solids. The primary species of P in digestate solids were simple calcium phosphates. However, a high co-occurrence of magnesium (Mg) and P, indicated that struvite or other magnesium phosphates may also be important species. At low temperatures, py

Molecular mechanisms in the pyrolysis of unsaturated chlorinated hydrocarbons: formation of benzene rings. 2. Experimental and kinetic modeling studies.

The mechanism of formation of benzene rings during the pyrolysis of dichloro- and trichloroethylenes has been investigated by the method of laser powered homogeneous pyrolysis coupled with product analysis by gas chromatography. Additionally, selected (co)pyrolyses between the chlorinated ethylenes, CH2Cl2, C4Cl4, C4Cl6, and C2H2 have been performed to explicitly probe the roles of 2C3 and C4/C2 reaction pairs in aromatic growth. The presence of odd-carbon products in neat C4Cl6 pyrolyses indicates that 2C3 processes are operative in these systems; however, comparison with product yields from
