Frailty index deficit interchangeability: an empirical test using random survival forests in adults with cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: The frailty index (FI) assumes that deficits are interchangeable; the type of individual items matters less than the total count. Machine learning is increasingly used to create shorter FIs, often motivated by perceived barriers to collecting many items in clinical settings despite availability of electronic health records. We explored whether FI item selection matters when predicting mortality in adults living with cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS: We analysed 3669 adults living with CVD from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2018) with a 46-item FI.

A novel bearing current signal diagnosis method combining variational modal decomposition and improved random forests.

A new fault diagnosis approach based on bearing current signals is proposed in this paper. First, in view of strong background noise of the current signal, the variational modal decomposition method is applied to decompose the bearing current signal to obtain multiple intrinsic mode functions, and then the intrinsic mode functions are constructed as the input feature vector according to the kurtosis. Second, to avoid the influence of random forest parameters on the random forest classifier, a random forest faulty bearing diagnostic model optimized by the whale algorithm is established. Finally

Correlates of cannabis use disorder in the United States: A comparison of logistic regression, classification trees, and random forests.

Although several recent studies have examined psychosocial and demographic correlates of cannabis use disorder (CUD) in adults, few, if any, recent studies have evaluated the performance of machine learning methods relative to standard logistic regression for identifying correlates of CUD. The present study used pooled data from the 2015-2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to evaluate psychosocial and demographic correlates of CUD in adults. In addition, we compared the performance of logistic regression, classification trees, and random forest methods in classifying CUD. When comparin

Gait phenotypes in paediatric hereditary spastic paraplegia revealed by dynamic time warping analysis and random forests.

The Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias (HSP) are a group of heterogeneous disorders with a wide spectrum of underlying neural pathology, and hence HSP patients express a variety of gait abnormalities. Classification of these phenotypes may help in monitoring disease progression and personalizing therapies. This is currently managed by measuring values of some kinematic and spatio-temporal parameters at certain moments during the gait cycle, either in the doctor´s surgery room or after very precise measurements produced by instrumental gait analysis (IGA). These methods, however, do not provide inf

Identifying Important Risk Factors for Survival in Kidney Graft Failure Patients Using Random Survival Forests.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation is the best alternative treatment for end-stage renal disease. Several studies have been devoted to investigate predisposing factors of graft rejection. However, there is inconsistency between the results. The objective of the present study was to utilize an intuitive and robust approach for variable selection, random survival forests (RSF), and to identify important risk factors in kidney transplantation patients. METHODS: The data set included 378 patients with kidney transplantation obtained through a historical cohort study in Hamadan, western Iran, from

Enhancing short-term predictions of mortality risk for liver transplant candidates through random survival forests.

MELD-based scores do not fully account for systemic and metabolic risk in liver transplant candidates, with notable gaps for those with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). In this retrospective, outcome-anchored, single-center proof-of-concept study, we analyzed adult patients listed for liver transplantation at our institute from 2004 to 2025. We analyzed clinical and laboratory data collected 3-12 months prior to death, transplantation, or censoring, focusing on advanced disease stages. Exclusion criteria included hepatocellular carcinoma and incomplete MELD 3.0

Comparison of land use regression and random forests models on estimating noise levels in five Canadian cities.

Chronic exposure to environment noise is associated with sleep disturbance and cardiovascular diseases. Assessment of population exposed to environmental noise is limited by a lack of routine noise sampling and is critical for controlling exposure and mitigating adverse health effects. Land use regression (LUR) model is newly applied in estimating environmental exposures to noise. Machine-learning approaches offer opportunities to improve the noise estimations from LUR model. In this study, we employed random forests (RF) model to estimate environmental noise levels in five Canadian cities and

Analyzing Walking Route Choice through Built Environments using Random Forests and Discrete Choice Techniques.

Walking is a form of active transportation with numerous benefits, including better health outcomes, lower environmental impacts and stronger communities. Understanding built environmental associations with walking behavior is a key step towards identifying design features that support walking. Human mobility data available through GPS receivers and cell phones, combined with high resolution walkability data, provide a rich source of georeferenced data for analyzing environmental associations with walking behavior. However, traditional techniques such as route choice models have difficulty wit

Non-invasive prediction of occult peritoneal metastasis (OPM) in gastric cancer using logistic regression and random forest integrative models with CT radiomics and clinical parameters: machine learning prediction of gastric OPM.

BACKGROUND: Occult peritoneal metastasis (OPM) in gastric cancer is frequently missed on preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT), leading to understaging in about 30-40% of patients and necessitating invasive laparoscopy for confirmation. A non-invasive tool to preoperatively identify OPM would help avoid unnecessary surgery and guide individualized treatment, but existing models lack interpretability and do not compare linear vs. nonlinear decision mechanisms. Therefore, we aimed to develop interpretable integrated models and compare their decision mechanisms and predictive pe

Leveraging Random Forests explainability for predictive modeling of children's conduct problems: insights from individual and family factors.

Conduct problems are among the most complex, impairing, and prevalent challenges affecting the mental health of children and adolescents. Due to their multifaceted nature, it is important to develop predictive models that capture the intricate interactions among contributing factors. This longitudinal study aims to: (1) evaluate the utility and effectiveness of Random Forest models for classifying children with varying levels of conduct problems, (2) analyze the interactions between individual and family variables in predicting high levels of conduct problems, and (3) determine the most releva

Molecular design aided by random forests and synthesis of potent trypanocidal agents as cruzain inhibitors for Chagas disease treatment.

Cruzain is an established target for the identification of novel trypanocidal agents, but how good are in vitro/in vivo correlations? This work describes the development of a random forests model for the prediction of the bioavailability of cruzain inhibitors that are Trypanosoma cruzi killers. Some common properties that characterize drug-likeness are poorly represented in many established cruzain inhibitors. This correlates with the evidence that many high-affinity cruzain inhibitors are not trypanocidal agents against T. cruzi. On the other hand, T. cruzi killers that present typical drug-l

Drug Concentration Thresholds Predictive of Therapy Failure and Death in Children With Tuberculosis: Bread Crumb Trails in Random Forests.

BACKGROUND: The role of drug concentrations in clinical outcomes in children with tuberculosis is unclear. Target concentrations for dose optimization are unknown. METHODS: Plasma drug concentrations measured in Indian children with tuberculosis were modeled using compartmental pharmacokinetic analyses. The children were followed until end of therapy to ascertain therapy failure or death. An ensemble of artificial intelligence algorithms, including random forests, was used to identify predictors of clinical outcome from among 30 clinical, laboratory, and pharmacokinetic variables. RESULTS: A

Can synthetic data reproduce real-world findings in epidemiology? A replication study using adversarial random forests.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic data hold substantial potential to address practical challenges in epidemiology due to restricted data access and privacy concerns. However, many current methods suffer from limited quality, high computational demands, and complexity for non-experts. Furthermore, common evaluation strategies for synthetic data often fail to directly reflect statistical utility and measure privacy risks sufficiently. Against this background, a critical underexplored question is whether synthetic data can reliably reproduce key findings from epidemiological research while preserving privacy

Prognostic risk factor of major salivary gland carcinomas and survival prediction model based on random survival forests.

Salivary gland malignancies are rare and are often acompanied by poor prognoses. So, identifying the populations with risk factors and timely intervention to avoid disease progression is significant. This study provides an effective prediction model to screen the target patients and is helpful to construct a cost-effective follow-up strategy. We enrolled 249 patients diagnosed with salivary gland tumors and analyzed prognostic risk factors using Cox proportional hazard univariable and multivariable regression models. The patients' data were split into training and validation sets on a 7:3 rati

An evaluation of transport mode shift policies on transport-related physical activity through simulations based on random forests.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is widely recognized as one of the leading causes of mortality, and transport accounts for a large part of people's daily physical activity. This study develops a simulation approach to evaluate the impact of the Ile-de-France Urban Mobility Plan (2010-2020) on physical activity, under the hypothesis that the intended transport mode shifts are realized. METHODS: Based on the Global Transport Survey (2010, n = 21,332) and on the RECORD GPS Study (2012-2013, n = 229) from the French capital region of Paris (Ile-de-France), a simulation method was designed and tes
