An executive-functions-based reading training enhances sensory-motor systems integration during reading fluency in children with dyslexia.

The Simple View of Reading model suggests that intact language processing and word decoding lead to proficient reading comprehension, with recent studies pointing at executive functions as an important component contributing to reading proficiency. Here, we aimed to determine the underlying mechanism(s) for these changes. Participants include 120 8- to 12-year-old children (n = 55 with dyslexia, n = 65 typical readers) trained on an executive functions-based reading program, including pre/postfunctional MRI and behavioral data collection. Across groups, improved word reading was related to str

Scoping Review of Music Interventions Aimed at Improving Reading Skills in Children with Specific Learning Disorders in Reading.

An emerging body of research utilizes music in the treatment of children with specific learning disorders in reading. However, greater understanding of music interventions is necessary for efficient application of music to address children's specific reading needs. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to identify the key musical concepts used to improve reading skills. Intervention studies were identified through online searches of databases and hand searching of primary journals in music therapy, and 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. For the 12 studies, auditory processing, phonological

Effects of a Virtually Delivered Reading and Embedded Mindset Intervention on Reading Performance for Fourth-Grader Struggling Readers.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a virtual intensive reading intervention embedded with mindset training compared to typical reading instruction in a business-as-usual (BAU) condition delivered to fourth grade students with or at-risk for reading disabilities. After screening, the 59 participants were stratified and assigned randomly to condition. Highly trained interventionists delivered the intervention one-to-one with high fidelity and student engagement during the intensive intervention. Classroom teachers delivered the BAU. We examined the effects of the interventio

Tracking reading skills and reading-related skills in dyslexia before (age 5) and after (ages 10-17) diagnosis.

This study had three goals: to examine the stability of deficits in the phonological and lexical routes in dyslexia (group study), to determine the prevalence of dyslexia profiles (multiple-case study), and to identify the prediction of phonemic segmentation and discrimination skills before reading acquisition on future reading level. Among a group of 373 non-readers seen at age 5, 38 students were subsequently diagnosed as either consistent dyslexic readers (18 DYS) or consistent typical readers (20 TR). Their phonological and lexical reading skills were assessed at ages 10 and 17 and their p

Visual Attentional Training Improves Reading Capabilities in Children with Dyslexia: An Eye Tracker Study During a Reading Task.

Dyslexia is a specific disorder in reading abilities. The aim of this study was to explore whether a short visual attentional training could improve reading capabilities in children with reading disorders by changing their oculomotor characteristics. Two groups (G1 and G2) of 25 children with reading disabilities and who are matched in IQ (intelligence quotient), sex, and age participated in the study. The allocation of a subject to a specific group (G1 = experimental group; G2 = control group) was generated in an unpredictable random sequence. The reading task was recorded twice for G1, i.e.,

Reading and reading-related skills in adults with dyslexia from different orthographic systems: a review and meta-analysis.

An individual diagnosed with dyslexia in childhood typically remains dyslexic throughout his/her life. However, the cognitive profile of adults with dyslexia has been less explored than that of children. This meta-analytic study is intended to clarify three questions: (1) To what extent, and in what manner, do adults with reading difficulties (dyslexia) differ from typical adult readers in measures of reading and writing competence and related cognitive skills?; (2) To what extent do speed measures pose a greater challenge than accuracy measures in an adult population that has already had year

A universal reading network and its modulation by writing system and reading ability in French and Chinese children.

Are the brain mechanisms of reading acquisition similar across writing systems? And do similar brain anomalies underlie reading difficulties in alphabetic and ideographic reading systems? In a cross-cultural paradigm, we measured the fMRI responses to words, faces, and houses in 96 Chinese and French 10-year-old children, half of whom were struggling with reading. We observed a reading circuit which was strikingly similar across languages and consisting of the left fusiform gyrus, superior temporal gyrus/sulcus, precentral and middle frontal gyri. Activations in some of these areas were modula

Individual Differences in Reading Skill Are Related to Trial-by-Trial Neural Activation Variability in the Reading Network.

Recent work has suggested that variability in levels of neural activation may be related to behavioral and cognitive performance across a number of domains and may offer information that is not captured by more traditional measures that use the average level of brain activation. We examined the relationship between reading skill in school-aged children and neural activation variability during a functional MRI reading task after taking into account average levels of activity. The reading task involved matching printed and spoken words to pictures of items. Single trial activation estimates were

Longitudinal stability of pre-reading skill profiles of kindergarten children: implications for early screening and theories of reading.

Research suggests that early identification of developmental dyslexia is important for mitigating the negative effects of dyslexia, including reduced educational attainment and increased socioemotional difficulties. The strongest pre-literacy predictors of dyslexia are rapid automatized naming (RAN), phonological awareness (PA), letter knowledge, and verbal short-term memory. The relationship among these constructs has been debated, and several theories have emerged to explain the unique role of each in reading ability/disability. Furthermore, the stability of identification of risk based on t

Altered patterns of directed connectivity within the reading network of dyslexic children and their relation to reading dysfluency.

Reading is a complex cognitive skill subserved by a distributed network of visual and language-related regions. Disruptions of connectivity within this network have been associated with developmental dyslexia but their relation to individual differences in the severity of reading problems remains unclear. Here we investigate whether dysfunctional connectivity scales with the level of reading dysfluency by examining EEG recordings during visual word and false font processing in 9-year-old typically reading children (TR) and two groups of dyslexic children: severely dysfluent (SDD) and moderatel

Word frequency effects in the left IFG in dyslexic and normally reading children during picture naming and reading.

Word frequency effects have been reported in numerous neuroimaging studies with typically reading adults, emphasising the role of the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG). Within LIFG, different cytoarchitectonic modules (areas 44 and 45) have been related to phonological vs. lexico-semantic processing, respectively. This fMRI study investigated the differential impact of word frequency on LIFG activation in reading and picture naming in primary school children with and without developmental dyslexia. All children showed the typical LIFG frequency effect in both tasks. The effect was comparable

Predicting reading comprehension of narrative and expository texts among Hebrew-speaking readers with and without a reading disability.

The aim of this study was to investigate which cognitive and reading-related linguistic skills contribute to reading comprehension of narrative and expository texts. The study examined an Israeli national database of Hebrew-speaking readers in fourth grade, from which a subsample of 190 readers with a reading disability (RD) and 190 readers with no reading disability (NRD) was selected. IQ, text reading, reading comprehension, and various linguistic and cognitive skills were assessed. Structural equation modeling results suggested that both groups rely on lower level processes such as text rea

Event-related potentials to pitch and rise time change in children with reading disabilities and typically reading children.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether children with reading disabilities (RD) process rise time and pitch changes differently to control children as a function of the interval between two tones. METHODS: Children participated in passive oddball event-related potential (ERP) measurements using paired stimuli. Mismatch negativity (MMN), P3a and late discriminative negativity (LDN) responses to rise time and pitch changes were examined. RESULTS: Control children produced larger responses than children with RD to pitch change in the P3a component but only when th

Reading to Translate or Translating to Read? Modeling Translators' Eye Movements with Multilingual Pre-Trained Models.

Translation and post-editing both integrate reading into bilingual text production, yet it remains unclear which computational predictors from multilingual pre-trained models best account for translators' reading patterns across task types and translation directions. We recruited twenty-six Chinese L1 translators who completed en→zh and zh→en translation and post-editing tasks, yielding 104 eye-tracking sessions. Dependent measures were source reading time (TrtS), target reading time (TrtT), and target production duration (Dur). Predictors were derived from two model architectures, a decoder-o

Comparison of Expert Reads Versus Local Clinical Reads of Amyloid PET Scans in the IDEAS Study.

Amyloid-targeting therapies and growing reimbursement are expected to increase the clinical use of amyloid PET. The Imaging Dementia-Evidence for Amyloid Scanning (IDEAS) study captured more than 18,000 clinical scan interpretations from local radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians in the United States. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of these interpretations by comparing local clinical reads of a representative sample of IDEAS scans to retrospective majority interpretations by expert readers. Methods: A representative subset of amyloid PET scans from the IDEAS study, 500 pe

The effects of orthography, phonology, semantics, and working memory on the reading comprehension of children with and without reading dyslexia.

In this study, we examined to what extent orthographic skills, phonological processing, oral vocabulary, and word memory accounted for variance in reading comprehension among upper-elementary school children with and without dyslexia. The tasks came from the Tests of Dyslexia (TOD). Data from 753 participants (typically developing n = 575; children with dyslexia n = 143) ages 8 to 11 were analyzed with t-tests and multiple regression models. Performance of typically developing children was significantly higher than children with dyslexia on all tasks (p < .001). Typically developing children e

Can the right hemisphere read? A behavioral and disconnectome study on implicit reading in a patient with pure alexia.

Patients with pure alexia have major difficulties in reading aloud. However, they often perform above chance level in reading tasks that do not require overt articulation of the target word - like lexical decision or semantic judgment - a phenomenon usually known as "implicit reading." There is no agreement in the literature on whether implicit reading should be attributed to relative sparing of some left hemisphere (LH) reading centers or rather to signs of compensatory endeavors by the right hemisphere (RH). We report the case of an 81-year-old patient (AA) with pure alexia due to a lesion i
