PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is routinely utilized for evaluation of disorders of the lower gastrointestinal tract. In this review, we summarize the current status of rectal EUS in clinical practice and describe recent developments in diagnostic and therapeutic rectal EUS.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent guidelines recommend rectal EUS for rectal cancer staging as a second line modality in cases where MRI is contraindicated. The clinicopathologic features of neoplasms arising in gastrointestinal endometriosis have not been well characterized. In this series, we report 17 cases of gastrointestinal endometriosis complicated by neoplasms (14 cases) or precancerous changes (three cases). Four patients, one of whom also had hypermenorrhea, presented with chronic abdominal pain and five had obstructive symptoms; one of these also had rectal bleeding. We report a case of implantation of tumor cells within a fistula in ano. A 36-year-old man with a 16-year history of an anal fistula underwent an operation for rectal carcinoma. Three weeks later, the anal fistula was resected. A histological examination of the specimen showed atypical cells; moreover, rectal carcinoma had proliferated in the granulation tissue lying underneath the intact squamous epithelium. Because there was no continuity to the rectal carcinoma or the anal glands, we diagnosed implantation of rectal cancer cells in a fistula in ano.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs) has increased, alongside novel therapies and care models. Whether these advances translated into improved survival is unclear.
METHODS: Population-based retrospective cohort study of GEP-NENs between 2000-2019. Overall survival (OS) was analyzed using time-to-event methods. Restricted cubic splines assessed non-linear associations between diagnosis year and hazards of death; multivariable Cox regression adjusted for age, sex, primary site, and metastatic status.

We analyzed the sensitivity of the barium enema examination in 128 patients with 191 endoscopically proven colonic polyps and 12 carcinomas, relative to patient age, indications, and the type of examination used.
