Dimensions of Social Capital for Supporting Informal Carers of Patients With Advanced Chronic Illness in the Community: A Concept Mapping Study.

INTRODUCTION: Social capital, defined as social interactions that increase the productivity of a community, can help address the health needs of the community. Although evidence suggests that carers of patients with advanced chronic illnesses experience a high caregiving burden and require community support, the specific dimensions of social capital they need remain unclear. METHODS: This concept mapping study was conducted between April 2021 and July 2023. In total, 98 stakeholders, including 25 carers, 25 patients, 24 professionals and 24 community members, were recruited through purposive

A Descriptive Qualitative Study of Breastfeeding Challenges, Enablers and Confidence Among Women With Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are at a significantly increased risk for chronic hypertension and premature cardiovascular disease. Although breastfeeding may have cardiovascular benefits, those with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy tend to have lower rates of breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity. A deeper understanding of their breastfeeding experiences is necessary to inform effective interventions that support lactation. RESEARCH AIM: This study aimed to explore breastfeeding challenges, enablers, and factors influencing breastfeeding con

Structural conditions, social networks, and the HIV vulnerability among Indonesian male labour migrants and motorbike taxi drivers.

BACKGROUND: The Indonesian National AIDS report reveals that the percentage of HIV cases in the country is significantly higher in men compared to women, which is contrary to global AIDS data. Using a conceptual model of how social networks impact health, this paper describes how structural conditions, such as poverty, lack of job opportunities, and lack of income shaped the social networks of Indonesian men. It also describes how these social networks created opportunities for various social mechanisms, including social influence, peer pressure, and intimate contact, that facilitated HIV infe

Exploring the status of online social support for older adults with cancer: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The estimated number of new cases among older adults with cancer has been increasing. Considering the decrease in social networks as adults age, their need for social support is often unmet. Notably, an increasing number of older adults with cancer have access to social support through online technologies, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, which heightened the need for online social support. Little is known, however, about the extent to which online social support for older people with cancer has developed. This scoping review aims to explore the developments in online soci

Support factors contributing to successful start-up businesses by young entrepreneurs in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Unemployment and restricted work opportunities for youth are enduring social challenges that affect health, well-being, and quality of life, especially in low- to middle-income countries. When considering the advantages associated with work as a determinant of health, unemployment is understood to contribute to occupational injustice. However, self-employment, hailed the solution to youth unemployment, is often necessity-driven, precarious in nature and restricted by the low success rate of business start-ups. OBJECTIVE: Research was undertaken to explore factors perceived to cont

"How do You Take that Much Time for One Person's Life?" Experiences of Dementia Caregivers Who are Not Immediate Family.

One in three people with Alzheimer's or other dementias lives alone, without a spouse/partner or nearby children (i.e., is aging solo), yet most dementia caregiving research has focused solely on spouses or children. This study examined the experiences of friends, neighbors, siblings, and others providing unpaid care for someone with dementia. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 caregivers (100% female; age 54-85, mean 71; 93% white, 7% black; 29% friend, 29% sibling or in-law, 21% neighbor, 21% church congregant). Participants balanced three priorities: the person living with deme

"It Wasn't Just One Thing": A Qualitative Study of Newly Homeless Emergency Department Patients.

OBJECTIVES: Emergency departments (EDs) frequently care for patients who are homeless or unstably housed. One promising approach taken by the homeless services system is to provide interventions that attempt to prevent homelessness before it occurs. Experts have suggested that health care settings may be ideal locations to identify and intervene with patients at risk for homelessness, yet little is known even about the basic characteristics of patients who might benefit from such interventions. METHODS: We conducted in-depth, one-on-one qualitative interviews with ED patients who had become h

Doctors with Asperger's: the impact of a diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Asperger syndrome (AS) is part of a spectrum of disorders encompassing difficulties with social interaction that may result in specific educational needs for doctors in training. There is currently limited research on the impact of AS on working as a doctor. METHODS: This is a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews to explore the perceptions of trainees diagnosed with AS following input from a professional support service, and the perspectives of the staff involved in their professional development. FINDINGS: Receiving a diagnosis of AS was viewed as a double-edged sw

What are the experiences of adults returning to work following recovery from Guillain-Barré syndrome? An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

PURPOSE: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a transient inflammatory disorder affecting peripheral nerves, characterised by weakness and numbness in limbs, upper body and face. Residual problems affect a large minority, and complicate return to work. This qualitative study explored the experiences of people who returned to work following their diagnosis of GBS and recovery, to gain insight into factors that facilitated or inhibited this process. METHOD: Five people participated in in-depth interviews. Individual and common experiences were explored through interpretative phenomenological analys

Variation in reported safety of lumbar interbody fusion: influence of industrial sponsorship and other study characteristics.

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. OBJECTIVE: To quantify variability in undesirable outcomes among studies of lumbar interbody fusion using stand-alone cage devices, and to determine whether author conflicts of interest contribute to variability. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Promising early studies of lumbar fusion with stand-alone cage devices led to rapid uptake of the technique, but some surgeons later expressed reservations regarding efficacy and safety. METHODS: We systematically identified studies of lumbar interbody fusion with stand-alone cage devices that reported at least one undesi

An investigation of the relation between online and offline violence: methodological and theoretical considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Research focusing on whether exposure to "online" violence via social media (exposure to violent content, such as videos of beatings or fights) predicts the use of physical "offline" violence (from hitting and threatening someone to violence against objects) in real-life is scarce and consists of mostly qualitative studies. The current quantitative study was designed to investigate this association while controlling for gender, and used the General Aggression Model (GAM) and the Developmental Neuro-ecological Risk-taking Model (DNERM) for its theoretical framework. Additionally,

Assessing respiratory function in young children: Developmental considerations.

The purpose of this review is to provide practitioners and clinical investigators with an update on methods of assessing respiratory function in young children. The importance of this topic is presented in light of the natural history of asthma, as well as maturational changes that occur early in life in terms of airway development. Models of disease are cited to support the concept that injury of the mammalian airway early in postnatal life might have far-reaching consequences in terms of control of airway caliber and responsiveness. The methods currently available to measure respiratory func
