Prevalence and clinical significance of papillary muscle infarction detected by late gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: The frequency of papillary muscle infarction (PapMI) without rupture has not been fully investigated in vivo. Furthermore, the relationship between papillary muscle dysfunction and mitral regurgitation (MR) has been controversial in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the frequency and clinical characteristics of PapMI without rupture using late gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred eighteen ST-segment ele

Berberine attenuates experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis via rebalancing the T cell subsets.

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a T cell-driven, autoantibody-mediated disease. Here we show that oral Berberine (BBR) ameliorated clinical symptoms of experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis(EAMG) rat model via decreasing the frequencies of Th1, Th17, Th1/17 cell subsets. JAK-STAT pathway was highlighted by transcriptomic analysis with EAMG mononuclear cells (MNCs). Surface plasmon resonance identified ligand binding interaction between BBR and JAK2, and electrostatic interaction was proposed by molecular dynamic simulation. Reduced phosphorylated JAK1/2/3 and STAT1/3 in MNCs from BBR-fed EAMG ra

"Hot potato voice" in peritonsillitis: a misnomer.

The "hot potato voice" is widely recognized as a symptom of peritonsillar cellulitis or abscess; yet there have been no studies assessing the resonance characteristics of the vocal tract in peritonsillitis. Analysis was undertaken of formant frequencies in the articulation of the vowels /i:/. /a:/ and /u:/ in six subjects with peritonsillitis and compared with articulation once the peritonsillitis had settled. Significant variation was found in F1 when articulating /i:/ and in F2 when articulating /a:/, which are explainable by dyskinesis of the peritonsillar musculature. These findings were c

Biological indicators for radiation damage.

Methods for estimating radiation dose using biological indicators have made rapid progress during recent years. Chromosome analysis in lymphocytes still plays a central role, but it is no longer the only quantitative system in biological dosimetry. The best approach seems to be to combine several of the assays exploiting their specific advantages: the high sensitivity in the case of dicentrics in lymphocytes (starting at about 0.05 Gy low-LET radiation), the broad dose range covered by the electron spin resonance technique (0.5-100 Gy), the possibility of identifying the localization of partia

Dramatic suppression of antiferromagnetic ordering in CeIn3 nanowires.

In this work, we have employed the Metallic-Flux Nanonucleation method to synthesize CeIn3 nanowires (diameter ≈ 175 nm) and single crystals for comparison. The physical properties of the nanowires were systematically investigated using Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED), magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). Semi-quantitative EDS analysis revealed a Ce : In ratio of 1 : 3.1(1), and the SAED results confirmed that the nanowires are polycrystalline with a cubic unit cell. Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat,

Thyroid tissue characterization by proton magnetic resonance relaxation time determination.

Measurements were performed at 37 degrees C on 49 fresh samples excised from cancerous (n = 16) or non-malignant (n = 33) thyroid tissues of 23 patients. They were carried out for protons at a frequency of 10.7 MHz with pulse sequences (90 degrees-t-90 degrees) and (90 degrees-t-180 degrees-t) for T1 and T2 respectively. The estimates were correlated to histopathology with quantitative measurements of the proportions of colloid, thyroid epithelium, fibrosis, and haemorrhage tissue. Discriminant analysis of malignant and non-malignant tissues using T1 and T2 values, was not successful. T1 and T

Sensitivity enhancement of a folded beam MEMS capacitive accelerometer-based microphone for fully implantable hearing application.

The present work attempts to enhance the sensitivity of a folded beam microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) capacitive accelerometer by optimising the device geometry. The accelerometer is intended to serve as a microphone in the fully implantable hearing application which can be surgically implanted in the middle ear bone structure. For the efficient design of the accelerometer as a fully implantable biomedical device, the design parameters such as size, weight and resonant frequency have been considered. The geometrical parameters are varied to obtain the optimum sensitivity considering the

The impact of palatal repair before and after 6 months of age on speech characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: Optimal timing of palatal repair is still subject of discussion. Although literature provides some evidence that palatal closure prior to 6 months positively influence speech outcome in children with clefts, only few studies verified this hypothesis. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare articulation and resonance characteristics following early (≤6 months) and later (>6 months) palatal repair, performed using the Sommerlad technique. METHODS: Comparison was made between 12 Ugandan children with isolated cleft (lip and) palate following early palatal repair (mean ag

Reusable terahertz metasurface microfluidic sensor with enhanced sensitivity for trace liquid analysis.

This study presents a reusable, high-sensitivity terahertz (THz) metasurface sensor integrated with a 4.1 µm ultra-thin microfluidic channel to address the critical challenges of low sensitivity and trace solution detection in conventional THz sensing platforms. Through comprehensive numerical simulations and experimental validation, we demonstrate a sensor achieving 0.565 THz/RIU sensitivity for minute analyte volumes (0.4 µL), representing a 2.58-to-5.64-fold enhancement over conventional THz metasurface structures. The measured resonance frequency shifts (Δf) for 0.4 µL of ethanol, methanol

Clinical, cognitive, and functional connectivity correlations of resting-state intrinsic brain activity alterations in unmedicated depression.

The pervasive and persistent nature of depressive symptoms has made resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) an appropriate approach for understanding the underlying mechanisms of major depressive disorder. The majority of rs-fMRI research has focused on depression-related alterations in the interregional coordination of brain baseline low frequency oscillations (LFOs). However, alteration of the regional amplitude of LFOs in depression, particularly its clinical, cognitive and network implications, has not been examined comprehensively yet. rs-fMRI amplitudes of low-frequ

Prospective pilot study of functional assessment of the Sphincter of Oddi via cine-dynamic MRCP with selective inversion recovery pulse.

BACKGROUND: Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD) can cause unexplained biliary pain and idiopathic pancreatitis. Although Rome IV criteria recommend sphincter of Oddi manometry (SOM) for diagnosis, SOM is invasive and carries pancreatitis risk. We hypothesized that cine-dynamic magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) could non-invasively visualize bile and pancreatic juice flow, enabling functional papillary assessment. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 40 participants were enrolled, and 29 were included in the final analysis after excluding 11 participants who did n

Experimentally validated dual-band GHz metamaterial perfect absorber biosensor with negative-index response and AI-assisted electromagnetic analysis for breast cancer dielectric discrimination.

A dual-band GHz metamaterial absorber (MPA) biosensor is presented as a proof-of-concept platform for dielectric-sensitive electromagnetic sensing integrated with AI-assisted broadband spectral analysis. The proposed three-layer copper-FR-4-copper structure exhibits near-unity absorption at 6.0 GHz and 9.1 GHz and demonstrates engineered negative-index behavior, which enhances electromagnetic field confinement and sensitivity to dielectric perturbations. The biosensor was fabricated using standard PCB technology and experimentally validated through free-space microwave measurements, showing ex

Implications of heart rate variability measured using wearable electrocardiogram devices in diagnosing Parkinson's disease and its association with neuroimaging biomarkers: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects cardiac autonomic regulation, and reduced HRV is associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, studies regarding the implications of HRV measures for the clinical manifestations of PD have shown inconclusive results. We examined the relationship between HRV measures obtained via long-term monitoring using a wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) device and the diagnosis and clinical characteristics of PD. METHODS: Seventeen controls and 20 patients with PD were prospectively enrolled. The HRV measures were recorded using a wearable ECG device
