Parainfluenza type 3 viral outbreak in a neonatal nursery.

An outbreak of parainfluenza virus type 3 infection that occurred in a special neonatal care unit is described. Birth weights of affected infants ranged from 1860 to 2080 g and gestational ages were between 28 and 32 weeks. Three infants presented with recurrent episodes of apnoea associated with oxygen desaturations on postnatal ages of 16 days, 26 days and 66 days respectively; upper respiratory tract infection symptoms such as coryza were absent in them. Two older infants who had oxygen dependent bronchopulmonary dysplasia presented with worsening of the respiratory status due to bronchioli

Rapid diagnosis of human parainfluenza virus type 1 infection by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR-enzyme hybridization assay.

The detection and quantitation of human parainfluenza virus type 1 (HPIV-1) RNA in nasal wash specimens from 49 children with lower respiratory infections were performed by a reverse transcription-PCR-enzyme hybridization assay (RT-PCR-EHA). The HPIV-1 RT-PCR-EHA was then used to test 40 samples from asymptomatic children. Primers and probes were designed from regions within the HPIV-1 hemagglutinin-neuraminidase gene which are highly conserved among all known genotypes. HPIV-1 was detected in all nine children who were culture positive. Other common respiratory viruses (HPIV-2, -3, and -4, mu

Hospitalization of Jewish and Bedouin infants in southern Israel for bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus.

We conducted a prospective study to determine the clinical picture and impact of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) on hospitalization for acute bronchiolitis of pediatric patients less than 2 years of age belonging to two different ethnic groups in Southern Israel: Jews and Bedouins. All patients younger than 2 years of age hospitalized for bronchiolitis during a typical RSV season were enrolled. During the study period 120 patients with bronchiolitis were hospitalized, and 83 (69%) were RSV-positive. Their age ranged from 20 days to 9 months. Fifty-five percent of all patients with RSV bronch

Severe respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia after autologous bone marrow transplantation: a report of three cases and review.

Three patients with acute leukemia who underwent autologous bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in complete remission, developed a severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) pneumonia, which was fatal in two. Identification of RSV was made on the products of bronchoalveolar lavage by direct immunofluorescence. As already described by others, the initial course of RSV infection varies, depending on whether it occurs sooner or later after BMT with a better prognosis in the latter situation. Treatment consists of aerosolized ribavirin. Infection by RSV is caused by manual contact with infected person

Bronchopulmonary obstruction in children with respiratory virus infections.

Among 873 children hospitalized with confirmed respiratory viral infections, 492 suffered from bronchopulmonary obstruction. Respiratory syncytial virus infections were dominant among the patients with bronchopulmonary obstruction (80%). The majority of patients with rhinovirus infections suffered from bronchopulmonary obstruction (57%). Two main groups of children at risk from developing bronchopulmonary obstruction during respiratory virus infections were found: 1) infants, suffering from bronchiolitis, mainly due to respiratory syncytial virus, and 2) children of all ages with bronchial ast

Outcome of acute lower respiratory tract infection in infants: preliminary report of seven-year follow-up study.

Seven years after admission to hospital for acute lower respiratory tract infection in infancy 200 children and their matched controls were assessed for respiratory state and epidemiological characteristics. The index group comprised 100 cases where respiratory syncytial virus infection had been responsible for the index illness (group 1) and 100 cases in whom this organism had not been found (group 2). There were no differences between index and control groups in birth weight or gestational age but fewer index cases were breast fed. Social indices such as class distribution and family size we

Clinical significance of pulmonary function tests. Alterations in pulmonary function following respiratory viral infection.

Respiratory viral illness is a major cause of morbidity in both adults and children. This report focuses on both the acute and chronic effects on respiratory function of these ubiquitous infections. Infant airways are particularly vulnerable due to the relatively low conductance in immature peripheral airways. Bronchiolitis, caused predominantly by respiratory syncytial virus, is the most important of these viral illnesses and is emerging as a major risk factor for the subsequent development of obstructive airway diseases in adults, possibly by interference with normal alveolar proliferation.

An intervention study to compare the outcome of administering a live intranasal Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Parainfluenza-3 vaccine to maternally derived antibody positive calves on the day of birth with calves vaccinated at one week of age.

The aim of the study was to demonstrate the efficacy of Bovilis INtranasal RSP Live administered on the day of birth (DoB) compared with administering the same vaccine between seven and ten days of age (D7). Health (including antibiotic treatments), mortality outcomes and weights in two groups of calves (DoB and D7) were monitored. Calves (n = 847) from seven farms were administered the vaccine on DoB or between day 7 and day 10 (D7) of life. Animals were weighed at week 1, weeks 3-4 and week 8 of life, using weigh tapes. Average daily liveweight gains (DLWG) were calculated. Adverse health ev

Age-Dependent Reduction in Asthmatic Pathology through Reprogramming of Postviral Inflammatory Responses.

Asthma is a chronic disease of childhood, but for unknown reasons, disease activity sometimes subsides as children mature. In this study, we present clinical and animal model evidence suggesting that the age dependency of childhood asthma stems from an evolving host response to respiratory viral infection. Using clinical data, we show that societal suppression of respiratory virus transmission during coronavirus disease 2019 lockdown disrupted the traditional age gradient in pediatric asthma exacerbations, connecting the phenomenon of asthma remission to virus exposure. In mice, we show that a

Effectiveness of two intranasal vaccines for the control of bovine respiratory disease in newborn beef calves: A randomized non-inferiority multicentre field trial.

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and bovine parainfluenza-3 virus (bPI3V) are major causes of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in newborn calves worldwide. Vaccination is widely used to prevent BRD, and intranasal vaccines for BRSV and bPI3V were developed to overcome interference from BRSV and bPI3V-specific maternally derived antibodies. Many experimental challenge trials have demonstrated that intranasal vaccines for BRSV and bPI3V are efficacious, but effectiveness under field conditions has been demonstrated less often, especially for newborn beef calves. The objective of this fi
