Reward anticipation is essential for directing behavior toward positively valenced stimuli, creating motivational salience. Task-related activation of the ventral striatum (VS) has long been used as a target for understanding reward function. However, some subjects may not be able to perform the respective tasks because of their complexity or subjects' physical or mental disabilities. Moreover, task implementations may differ, which results in limited comparability. Hence, developing a task-free method for evaluating neural gain circuits is essential. Research has shown that fluctuations in ne

Wearable technology used in Parkinson's disease (PD) research has become an increasing focus of interest in this field. Our group assessed the feasibility, clinical correlation, reliability, and acceptance of smartwatches in order to quantify arm resting tremors in PD patients. An Android application on a smartwatch was used to obtain raw data from the smartwatch's gyroscopes. Twenty-two PD patients were consecutively recruited and followed for 1 year. Arm rest tremors were video filmed and scored by two independent raters using the motor subscale of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scal

Objective. Skeletal muscle perfusion during walking relies on complex interactions between cardiac activity and vascular control mechanisms, why cardiac dysfunction may contribute to intermittent claudication (IC) symptoms. The study aims were to describe cardiac function at rest and during stress in consecutive IC patients, to explore the relations between cardiac function parameters and treadmill performance, and to test the hypothesis that clinically silent myocardial ischemia during stress may contribute to IC limb symptomatology. Design. Patients with mild to severe IC (n = 111, mean age

Hypoplastic coronary artery disease is a rare congenital abnormality reported to be associated with myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death. Provoked positive spasm in the left circumflex coronary artery (LCX) with pharmacological spasm provocation tests was remarkably lower than other coronary arteries. We sometimes encountered patients with rest angina and hypoplastic right coronary artery (H-RCA). Among 5953 patients with diagnostic and follow-up coronary arteriography, we found 93 patients (1.6%) with H-RCA. During the same period, we could perform spasm provocation tests in 564 pat

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Muscle-related symptoms with or without creatine kinase (CK) elevation are common adverse effects associated with statin use. Symptoms are ranging from benign myalgia to myositis and in rare cases to rhabdomyolysis. The aim was to characterize and describe muscular side effects and create an anatomical frequency mapping.
METHODS: The prospective observational study was performed at a large lipidology outpatient unit in Vienna. 1111 consecutively admitted patients with muscular side effects on statin monotherapy were included during a 4-year period. Anatomical mapping of t

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common inheritable psychiatric disorder characteristic of repetitive thinking, imagination (obsession), and stereotyped behaviors (compulsive). To explore whether there is an alteration of brain functional connectivity (BFC) in patients with OCD during rest, electroencephalogram (EEG) data of healthy controls (HCs) and patients with OCD were collected during rest in both eyes-closed and eyes-open states. Synchronization likelihood and graph theory were applied to construct and analyze brain functional networks of patients with OCD and HCs. Patients with

Increasing evidence indicates that focal lesions following stroke cause alterations in connectivity among functional brain networks. Functional connectivity between hemispheres has been shown to be particularly critical for predicting stroke-related behavioral deficits and recovery of motor function and attention. Much less is known, however, about the relevance of interhemispheric functional connectivity for cognitive abilities like praxis that rely on strongly lateralized brain networks. In the current study, we examine correlations between symptoms of apraxia-a disorder of skilled action th

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is an inherited disorder of adrenal steroidogenesis often diagnosed in infancy. Gynecologists may encounter adult patients with CAH due to the clinical effects of increased androgens, e.g. hirsutism, clitoromegaly, oligomenorrhea, or, rarely, pelvic masses. This case report reviews the association of para-ovarian adrenal rest tumors with CAH, and the role of gynecologists in their evaluation and treatment. A 23-year-old woman with CAH (21-hydroxyase deficiency) untreated for the past 5 years presented with a pelvic mass and elevated serum testosterone (1433

INTRODUCTION: The effects of repeated centrifugation in association with head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest (BR) on the mediation of basic reflexes associated with the major postural muscles was investigated as a potential countermeasure for maintaining balance control and neuromotor reflex function.
METHODS: There were 15 male volunteers who were exposed to 21 d of 6° HDT-BR. Eight were treated with daily 1-h artificial gravity (AG) exposures aboard a short radius centrifuge that provided 1-g footward loading at heart level. The other seven served as HDT-BR control subjects. Balance control was a

BACKGROUND: High frequency oscillations (>200 Hz) have been observed in the basal ganglia of PD patients and were shown to be modulated by the administration of levodopa and voluntary movement.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test whether the power of high-frequency oscillations in the STN is associated with spontaneous manifestation of parkinsonian rest tremor.
METHODS: The electromyogram of both forearms and local field potentials from the STN were recorded in 11 PD patients (10 men, age 58 [9.4] years, disease duration 9.2 [6.3] years). Patients were recorded at rest and whi

The binding of anions to carbonic anhydrase II (CA II) has been attributed to high affinity for the active-site zinc. An anion of interest is cyanate, for which contrasting binding modes have been reported in the literature. Previous spectroscopic data have shown cyanate behaving as an inhibitor, directly binding to the zinc, in contrast to previous crystallographic data that implied that cyanate acts as a substrate mimic that is not directly bound to the zinc but overlaps with the binding site of the substrate CO2. Wild-type and the V207I variant of CA II have been expressed and X-ray crystal

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether recommending cognitive rest to athletes after a sport-related concussion affects time to symptom resolution.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of 184 patients who presented to a sports concussion clinic in an academic medical centre between 1 November 2007 and 31 July 2009. The effect of recommending cognitive rest on symptom duration (days) was measured after adjusting for age, gender, initial PCSS score, history of amnesia, history of loss of consciousness and number of previous concussions. Using multivariate logistic regression, independen

Writer's cramp is a task-specific focal hand dystonia characterized by involuntary excessive muscle contractions during writing. Although abnormal striatal dopamine receptor binding has been implicated in the pathophysiology of writer's cramp and other primary dystonias, endogenous dopamine release during task performance has not been previously investigated in writer's cramp. Using positron emission tomography imaging with the D2/D3 antagonist 11C-raclopride, we analysed striatal D2/D3 availability at rest and endogenous dopamine release during sequential finger tapping and speech production

Spasmodic dysphonia is a primary focal dystonia characterized by involuntary spasms in the laryngeal muscles during speech production. The pathophysiology of spasmodic dysphonia is thought to involve structural and functional abnormalities in the basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical circuitry; however, neurochemical correlates underpinning these abnormalities as well as their relations to spasmodic dysphonia symptoms remain unknown. We used positron emission tomography with the radioligand [(11)C]raclopride (RAC) to study striatal dopaminergic neurotransmission at the resting state and during produc

The adult phenotype of an organism is the result of its genotype, the environment, and the interaction between the two. Assessing the relative contribution of these factors to the final adult phenotype continues to occupy researchers. Studies have shown clutch effects early in development but few have investigated the persistence of clutch effects on a longer time scale. Five clutches of American alligators were reared for 1 year in a common environment then assessed for the presence of clutch effects as they related to morphological and physiological characteristics. After 1 year, significant

Nephrogenic rests (NR) are foci of embryonal renal tissue that persist beyond the normal period of renal morphogenesis. They are commonly found in kidneys bearing Wilms tumor but may also rarely occur in different locations. Nephrogenic rests have been reported in the lumbosacral area in a total of nine cases, including our case. Of the nine cases, only one case prior to ours showed agenesis of one kidney in association with the NR. We report a 2-year-old female with a lipomyelomeningocele containing NRs and agenesis of the right kidney and discuss the molecular genetic basis of lumbosacral NR

Testicular adrenal rest tumors (TARTs) are considered to be formed from aberrant adrenal tissue that has become hyperplastic because of elevated adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in male patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). A 6-year-old boy presented with testicular enlargement and pubic hair. He was diagnosed with CAH complicated by precocious puberty. However, he was not followed-up. At the age of 17, he visited the outpatient clinic because of testicular enlargement and short stature. His right and left testicles were 10×6 cm and 7.5×4.5 cm, respectively. His height was 155.

The presence of obesity in COPD appears not to be a disadvantage with respect to dyspnea and weight-supported cycle exercise performance. We hypothesized that one explanation for this might be that the volume-reducing effects of obesity convey mechanical and respiratory muscle function advantages. Twelve obese chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (OB) [forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)) = 60%predicted; body mass index (BMI) = 32 ± 1 kg/m(2); mean ± SD] and 12 age-matched, normal-weight COPD (NW) (FEV(1) = 59%predicted; BMI = 23 ± 2 kg/m(2)) subjects were compared at rest and duri
