Retinal capillary microvessel morphology changes are associated with vascular damage and dysfunction in cerebral small vessel disease.

Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is a cause of stroke and dementia. Retinal capillary microvessels revealed by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) are developmentally related to brain microvessels. We quantified retinal vessel density (VD) and branching complexity, investigating relationships with SVD lesions, white matter integrity on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) to CO2 in patients with minor stroke. We enrolled 123 patients (mean age 68.1 ± SD 9.9 years), 115 contributed retinal data. Right (R) and left (L) eyes are reported. After adjust

MTPA_Unet: Multi-Scale Transformer-Position Attention Retinal Vessel Segmentation Network Joint Transformer and CNN.

Retinal vessel segmentation is extremely important for risk prediction and treatment of many major diseases. Therefore, accurate segmentation of blood vessel features from retinal images can help assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment. Convolutional neural networks are good at extracting local feature information, but the convolutional block receptive field is limited. Transformer, on the other hand, performs well in modeling long-distance dependencies. Therefore, in this paper, a new network model MTPA_Unet is designed from the perspective of extracting connections between local detaile

OCT angiography analysis of retinal vessel density in primary open-angle glaucoma with and without Tafluprost therapy.

BACKGROUND: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease which leads to irreversible blindness. An elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is considered to be the main risk factor for the disease progression. It is known that retinal blood flow is altered in POAG eyes. Tafluprost, a prostaglandin analogue which lowers the IOP, has shown to also improve the retinal blood flow in animals. METHODS: The current study therefore evaluated the retinal vessel density in the peripapillary and macular region of POAG patients with normal IOP treated with topical Tafluprost (

Association between Systemic Antioxidant Capacity and Retinal Vessel Diameters in Patients with Primary-Open Angle Glaucoma.

The retinal vessel narrowing may be implicated in the pathogenesis of glaucoma; however, the association between systemic oxidative stress and retinal vessel diameter remains largely unknown. We examined the relationship between serum oxidative stress markers and retinal vessel diameters in eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and cataract, using central retinal artery equivalent (CRAE) and central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE). We included 66 eyes of 66 patients with POAG (37 men, 29 women; 65.4 ± 11.7 years) and 20 eyes of 20 patients with cataract (7 men, 13 women; 69.4 ± 9.0 years

Retinal vessel diameter changes after 6 months of treatment in the Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Treatment Trial.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Prior studies support an association between increased retinal venule diameter and elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that retinal venule diameters decrease in association with long-term therapy for high ICP in subjects with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of multicentre randomised controlled trial data. Standardised procedures were used to measure area of optic nerve head elevation (ONHA) and diameters of 4 arterioles and 4 venules 2.7 mm from the optic disc centre o

Circumpapillary collateral vessel development in iatrogenic central retinal artery occlusion observed using OCT angiography.

PURPOSE: It has been reported that peripapillary loops develop after central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). Although cilioretinal anastomoses have been shown by fluorescein angiography (FA) and indocyanine green angiography, these examinations cannot confirm the structural continuity between the retinal arteries and the posterior ciliary arteries. In the current report, we followed a patient with iatrogenic CRAO in which circumpapillary collaterals formed and assessed the connection between these two vascular systems using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). OBSERVATION: Iatrog

Long-lasting impairments in rodent oxygen-induced retinopathy measured by retinal vessel density and visual function.

In mild or moderate retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), retinal vessels undergo obliteration, proliferation, and regression. Despite complete regression of vessel abnormalities, a variety of visual impairments have been reported. Rodent oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) is widely used as a model to study ROP. However, the long-term changes of OIR model remain unclear. The aim of this study is to examine long term changes of retinal vessel and visual function in a rodent OIR model resembling human mild or moderate ROP. In this study, after subjecting the animals to 80% oxygen (O2) for 5-7 d, the r

Parametric model fitting-based approach for retinal blood vessel caliber estimation in eye fundus images.

BACKGROUND: Changes in the retinal vessel caliber are associated with a variety of major diseases, namely diabetes, hypertension and atherosclerosis. The clinical assessment of these changes in fundus images is tiresome and prone to errors and thus automatic methods are desirable for objective and precise caliber measurement. However, the variability of blood vessel appearance, image quality and resolution make the development of these tools a non-trivial task. METHOLODOGY: A method for the estimation of vessel caliber in eye fundus images via vessel cross-sectional intensity profile model fi
