Genetic control of complex traits, with a focus on reproduction in pigs.

Reproductive traits are complex, and desirable reproductive phenotypes, such as litter size or semen quality, are true polygenetic traits determined by multiple gene regulatory pathways. Each individual gene contributes to the overall variation in these traits, so genetic improvements can be achieved using conventional selection methodology. In the past, a pedigree-based-relationship matrix was used; this is now replaced by a combination of pedigree-based- and genomic-relationship matrices. The heritability of reproductive traits is low to moderate, so large-scale data recording is required to

Identification of Candidate Signature Genes and Key Regulators Associated With Trypanotolerance in the Sheko Breed.

African animal trypanosomiasis (AAT) is caused by a protozoan parasite that affects the health of livestock. Livestock production in Ethiopia is severely hampered by AAT and various controlling measures were not successful to eradicate the disease. AAT affects the indigenous breeds in varying degrees. However, the Sheko breed shows better trypanotolerance than other breeds. The tolerance attributes of Sheko are believed to be associated with its taurine genetic background but the genetic controls of these tolerance attributes of Sheko are not well understood. In order to investigate the level

C7 vertebra homeotic transformation in domestic dogs - are Pug dogs breaking mammalian evolutionary constraints?

The number of cervical vertebrae in mammals is almost constant at seven, regardless of their neck length, implying that there is selection against variation in this number. Homebox (Hox) genes are involved in this evolutionary mammalian conservation, and homeotic transformation of cervical into thoracic vertebrae (cervical ribs) is a common phenotypic abnormality when Hox gene expression is altered. This relatively benign phenotypic change can be associated with fatal traits in humans. Mutations in genes upstream of Hox, inbreeding and stressors during organogenesis can also cause cervical rib

Advancing inclusive on-farm testing approaches to facilitate maize breakthrough product development in sub-Saharan Africa.

Developing breakthrough products that deliver at least 25% improvements in productivity in farmers' fields requires that breeding pipelines more closely align with farmers' and end-user needs and the target population of environments (TPEs). In the case of maize, climate change is accelerating climatic shifts within the TPE, potentially limiting future realised genetic gain. On-farm breeding approaches can play a valuable role in supporting breeding programs transitioning towards breakthrough products. Increased sampling of the TPE by moving selection into farmers' fields can overcome the chal

The genetics of skeletal muscle disorders in horses.

Horses are remarkable athletes and a fascinating species in which to study the genetic bases of athletic performance, skeletal muscle biology, and neuromuscular disease. Genetic selection in horses has resulted in many breeds that possess anatomical, physiological, and metabolic variations linked to speed, power, and endurance that are beginning to be defined at the molecular level. Along with the concentration of positive traits, equine breeding programs have also inadvertently concentrated heritable muscle diseases for which mutations impacting electrical conduction, muscle contraction, and

Utilization of frozen-thawed epididymal ram semen to preserve genetic diversity in Scrapie susceptible sheep breeds.

The European Union has introduced transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) resistance breeding programmes for several sheep breeds to cope with the genetic susceptibility to Scrapie infections. Due to the different allele frequencies among breeds, strong selection for ARR alleles is associated with a loss of genetic diversity in small populations and in larger populations with unfavourable ARR allele frequencies. To ensure maintenance of genetic diversity, an adhoc cryopreservation programme was initiated employing epididymal sperm from 109 rams representing 16 different breeds within one

Message to researchers: the characteristic absence of a posterior communicating artery is easily lost in the gerbil.

The Mongolian gerbil has historically been useful for brain ischemia experiments, owing to the gerbil's uniquely underdeveloped circle of Willis (CoW). This led to a gerbil model of cochlear ischemia being generated in our unit. However, we have found that the usual severe hearing loss seen in this model was not being induced consistently in recent experiments using the MON/Jms/GbsSlc gerbil (the sole commercially available gerbil in Japan). We set out to evaluate the posterior communicating artery (PcomA) in MON/Jms/GbsSlc, to re-establish whether this strain is appropriate for ischemia model

Taste-aversion-prone (TAP) rats and taste-aversion-resistant (TAR) rats differ in ethanol self-administration, but not in ethanol clearance or general consumption.

Taste-aversion (TA)-prone (TAP) rats and TA-resistant (TAR) rats have been developed by means of bidirectional selective breeding on the basis of their behavioral responses to a TA conditioning paradigm. The TA conditioning involved the pairing of an emetic-class agent (cyclophosphamide) with a novel saccharin solution as the conditioned stimulus. Despite the absence of ethanol in the selective breeding process, these rat lines differ widely in ethanol self-administration. In the current study, blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) were determined after 9 days of limited (2 h per day) access to

Principal component analysis of breeding values for growth and reproductive traits and genetic association with adult size in beef cattle.

Principal component analysis was applied to evaluate the variability and relationships among univariate breeding values predicted for 9 weaning and yearling traits, as well as suggest functions of the traits that would promote a particular breeding objective. Phenotypic and pedigree information from 600,132 Nelore animals was used. Genetic parameters and breeding values were obtained from univariate analyses of birth to weaning weight gain; weaning to yearling weight gain; conformation, finishing precocity, and muscling scores at weaning and at yearling; and yearling scrotal circumference. The Genetic Diversity of Horse Native Breeds in Russia.

Horses were domesticated later than other farm animals. Horse breeds have been selectively developed by humans to satisfy different needs and purposes. The factory and indigenous breeds are of particular interest, having been bred in purity for many centuries without the addition of foreign blood. Data from 31 stud farms, as well as ranches, located in fifteen regions of the Russian Federation were used in this work. DNA was sampled from 102 stallions of 11 breeds: Arabian, Akhal-Teke, Don, Orlov Trotter, Vladimir Heavy Draft, Russian Heavy Draft, Soviet Heavy Draft, Kabardin, Yakut, Tuva, and

Scrapie incidence and PRNP polymorphisms: rare small ruminant breeds of Sicily with TSE protecting genetic reservoirs.

BACKGROUND: Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) are fatal neurodegenerative diseases of several mammalian species, including humans. In Italy, the active surveillance through rapid tests on brain stem from small ruminants started in 2002 on randomly selected samples of healthy slaughtered animals. Sampling number was proportionally related to the regional small ruminant population. Of the twenty Italian regions, Sicily has the second largest population of small ruminants which is mainly constituted by crossbreed animals (>70 %). Sicily contains also three native sheep breeds Pinzir

Refining the Sox10Dom/+ mouse model: A new breeding strategy with relevance to Hirschsprung disease genetics.

BACKGROUND: The traditional Sox10Dom/+ mouse breeding strategy is costly and time-consuming, so this study aims to optimize the breeding method and improve the scientific research efficiency. METHODS: We select the offspring from mating B6C3Fe Sox10Dom/+ male mice with C57BL/6J female mice, and name the progeny B6C3Fe-g. Further, conduct separate self-breeding for both the B6C3Fe and B6C3Fe-g strains, adhering to the principle of pairing mutants with non-mutants. By comparing the number of offspring, survival rates, and the phenotype of aganglionosis in the colon, a comprehensive evaluation o

Large-scale diversification of skull shape in domestic dogs: disparity and modularity.

Abstract: The variation among domestic dog breeds offers a unique opportunity to study large-scale diversification by microevolutionary mechanisms. We use geometric morphometrics to quantify the diversity of skull shape in 106 breeds of domestic dog, in three wild canid species, and across the order Carnivora. The amount of shape variation among domestic dogs far exceeds that in wild species, and it is comparable to the disparity throughout the Carnivora. The greatest shape distances between dog breeds clearly surpass the maximum divergence between species in the Carnivora. Moreover, domestic

Livestock Genomics for Developing Countries - African Examples in Practice.

African livestock breeds are numerous and diverse, and typically well adapted to the harsh environment conditions under which they perform. They have been used over centuries to provide livelihoods as well as food and nutritional security. However, African livestock systems are dynamic, with many small- and medium-scale systems transforming, to varying degrees, to become more profitable. In these systems the women and men livestock keepers are often seeking new livestock breeds or genotypes - typically those that increase household income through having enhanced productivity in comparison to t

Whole-genome analysis reveals distinct adaptation signatures to diverse environments in Chinese domestic pigs.

BACKGROUND: Long-term natural and artificial selection has resulted in many genetic footprints within the genomes of pig breeds across distinct agroecological zones. Nevertheless, the mechanisms by which these signatures contribute to phenotypic diversity and facilitate environmental adaptation remain unclear. RESULTS: Here, we leveraged whole-genome sequencing data from 82 individuals from 6 domestic pig breeds originating in tropical, high-altitude, and frigid regions. Population genetic analysis suggested that habitat isolation significantly shaped the genetic diversity and contributed to

Predisposition to gastric dilatation-volvulus in relation to genetics of thoracic conformation in Irish setters.

Thoracic depth/width ratios (TDWRs) were calculated from measurements of the parents (i.e., common dam and two sires) and puppies in two litters of Irish setters. The TDWRs of the parents, distribution of TDWRs in the litters, and comparisons with earlier population studies suggest that an incompletely dominant major gene and a background of minor genes and environmental factors are responsible for the TDWR. A history of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) (i.e., bloat) was correlated with high TDWRs in this family as it was for Irish setters and certain other breeds studied earlier. It may be p

Breeding pure and crossbreeds of European cattle breeds for milk production improvement under tropical climate conditions-a review.

The aim of this review was to present the breeding status of pure or crossbreeds of European cattle with African indigenous cattle in order to improve milk yield in African tropical conditions. As the African indigenous breeds are characterized by small size, low body weight (300-450 kg) and low production performances (less than 1000 kg per lactation), short lactation length (205-240 days), etc., the crossbreeding with pure European cattle was done in order to ameliorate production performances especially milk and beef production. As results, it was seen that F1 offspring improved output prod
