Multi-site videoconferencing for home-based education of older people with chronic conditions: the Telehealth Literacy Project.

We examined the acceptability of multi-site videoconferencing as a method of providing group education to older people in their homes. There were 9 groups comprising 52 participants (mean age 73 years) with an average of four chronic conditions. Tablet computers or PCs were installed in participant's homes and connected to the Internet by the National Broadband Network (high-speed broad band network) or by the 4G wireless network. A health literacy and self-management programme was delivered by videoconference for 5 weeks. Participants were able to view and interact with all group members and

Patient Perceptions of In-person and Telehealth Group Support for Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders Before and After the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Group-based support is effective at reducing symptoms of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs); however, barriers to access exist. Telehealth is an important advancement in healthcare delivery that may mitigate access barriers. OBJECTIVE: This mixed-methods study explored barriers and facilitators to participation in a provider-led PMADs support group offered in-person and/or via video telehealth. METHODS: Group attendance and demographics were assessed via chart review for 94 patients who participated via in-person, and/or video telehealth groups. Semi-structured inter

Treatment of co-occurring alcohol dependence and perpetration of intimate partner violence: the role of anger expression.

The purpose of the current study was to examine the role of high self-reported anger on violence and substance use across treatment. Seventy-three, alcohol-dependent males, with a domestic violence arrest within the past year, completed baseline anger measures and engaged in a 12 week cognitive behavioral therapy or 12 step facilitation group. Monthly assessments of substance use and violence were completed. At baseline, participants high on anger expression reported more physical violence in the prior month and more violent arrests. Participants high on anger expression had a greater proporti

Pain management in sickle cell disease.

OBJECTIVES: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder characterized by recurrent 'crisis' pain, which is the most common reason for repeated hospital admission. The nature of this pain, however, is poorly understood, and the pain is often sub-optimally managed. METHODS: A focus group format, interpreted using thematic analysis, was used to gain a greater understanding of the barriers that SCD patients face in managing their pain and their perceptions of the treatment that they receive from healthcare professionals. RESULTS: Key issues emerging from the focus groups that advers

Online peer support program for women with metastatic cancer: a pre-post evaluation.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of metastatic cancer entails an enormous psychological, physical, and social burden, whereby affected women do not feel adequately supported. To address this issue, the Women's Self-Help Organization Cancer (Frauenselbsthilfe Krebs e.V. FSH) has implemented an innovative peer support program based on online group meetings moderated by trained peers to positively influence psychosocial distress and quality of life of affected women. This pre-post non-randomized study aims to systematically evaluate this program. METHODS: Participants were asked to evaluate the program in

A qualitative study of therapeutic effect from a user's perspective.

UNLABELLED: This study investigated the experiences of adults who have completed a course of therapy for stammering. The objective was to inform clinicians about the effect of therapy by listening to the client's own account of the experience after they had been discharged from therapy. The study involved individuals discussing their experiences and their views on the effect of therapy in an in-depth, semi-structured interview. The individual transcripts were subjected to analyses and several major themes emerged. A number of the themes had implications for clinical practice and these were con

Holistic medicine IV: principles of existential holistic group therapy and the holistic process of healing in a group setting.

In existential holistic group therapy, the whole person heals in accordance with the holistic process theory and the life mission theory. Existential group psychotherapy addresses the emotional aspect of the human mind related to death, freedom, isolation, and meaninglessness, while existential holistic group therapy addresses the state of the person"s wholeness. This includes the body, the person's philosophy of life, and often also love, purpose of life, and the spiritual dimension, to the same extent as it addresses the emotional psyche and sexuality, and it is thus much broader than tradit

A cluster randomised controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of the 'Support group' intervention in primary schools in Norway: A study protocol.

Bullying is a pervasive public health issue that significantly affects the mental and physical well-being of children, often leading to long-term consequences that persist into adulthood, such as mental health disorders, social isolation, and economic challenges. Despite numerous interventions implemented in schools, bullying remains a persistent problem. The Support Group intervention, based on a solution-focused approach (SFA), aims to address bullying by enhancing peer support and empowering children within the school environment. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of this inter

Being an XY female: an analysis of accounts from the website of the androgen insensitivity syndrome support group.

We report an investigation of the experience of being an XY female through the analysis of accounts posted on an Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome support group website. We investigated management of narrative identity following diagnosis, focusing on barriers and aids to narrative revision. Barriers included the sense of stigma arising from secrecy imposed by doctors and families in a society assuming binary sex and gender. Women were assisted in deriving new meaning from their condition by finding that others share a collective narrative of XY womanhood. The results of this research have impli

Group meetings for parents and spouses of bone marrow transplant patients.

To reduce the stress and social isolation of being the parent or spouse of a patient hospitalized for bone marrow transplantation (BMT), a support group for family members was established. Sharing the common experience of the BMT procedure was valuable to family members despite differences in patient's age or disease, relationship to the patient, or socio-economic status. Recommendations are made to include similar groups in planning to meet the psychosocial needs of family members at other centers where patients are treated with high-risk, high intensity procedures.

Efficacy of a Self-Help Web-Based Recovery Training in Improving Sleep in Workers: Randomized Controlled Trial in the General Working Population.

BACKGROUND: Sleep complaints are among the most prevalent health concerns, especially among workers, which may lead to adverse effects on health and work. Internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (iCBT-I) offers the opportunity to deliver effective solutions on a large scale. The efficacy of iCBT-I for clinical samples has been demonstrated in recent meta-analyses, and there is evidence that iCBT-I is effective in the working population with severe sleep complaints. However, to date, there is limited evidence from randomized controlled trials that iCBT-I could also be an ef

Effects of the appearance care program for breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy: A mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of breast cancer entails surgery, often followed by chemotherapy. Alopecia is a major, intractable side effect with potentially profound impacts on appearance. We developed a nurse-facilitated program targeting appearance-related symptoms. AIMS: This study explored the effects of the appearance care program on quality of life (QOL). The program was delivered across three sessions, each involving personal reflections on appearance concerns, short lectures on skincare and makeover techniques, and small group discussions. METHOD AND RESULTS: Seventy-two women who attended

A structured telephone-delivered intervention to reduce problem alcohol use (Ready2Change): study protocol for a parallel group randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current population surveys suggest around 20% of Australians meet diagnostic criteria for an alcohol use disorder. However, only a minority seek professional help due to individual and structural barriers, such as low health literacy, stigma, geography, service operating hours and wait lists. Telephone-delivered interventions are readily accessible and ideally placed to overcome these barriers. We will conduct a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to examine the efficacy of a standalone, structured telephone-delivered intervention to reduce alcohol consumption, problem severity and r

The Oley Foundation and Consumer Support Groups.

Patients with intestinal failure (IF) often require home parenteral and/or enteral nutrition (HPEN). There are many complications associated with both IF and the use of HPEN, including infection and intolerance. Psychosocial effects, such as depression, isolation, fatigue, anxiety, financial stress, are also associated with IF and HPEN and can be difficult to address. Support groups offer patients and caregivers the opportunity to talk to and learn from others who have had similar experiences. The Oley Foundation, a nonprofit organization for HPEN consumers, caregivers, and clinicians, fulfill

Qualitative Analysis of the Content Found in Online Discussion Boards for Urethral Stricture Disease and Urethroplasty.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the patient experience and chief concerns with urethroplasty to improve physician understanding and patient education. Online discussion boards allow patients with urethral stricture disease (USD) to connect with other USD patients. It is unknown how men use these web resources and what information is available about urethroplasty. METHODS: Three online forums featuring urethroplasty were identified by Google search. Thematic analysis categorized the content of posts using manually applied codes, with inter-rater reliability and descriptive statistics generated by Dedoo

The Association Between Increased Levels of Patient Engagement With an Internet Support Group and Improved Mental Health Outcomes at 6-Month Follow-Up: Post-Hoc Analyses From a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: We recently reported that depressed and anxious primary care patients randomized to a moderated internet support group (ISG) plus computerized cognitive behavioral therapy (cCBT) did not experience improvements in depression and anxiety over cCBT alone at 6-month follow-up. OBJECTIVE: The 1% rule posits that 1% of participants in online communities generate approximately 90% of new user-created content. The aims of this study were to apply the 1% rule to categorize patient engagement with the ISG and identify whether any patient subgroups benefitted from ISG use. METHODS: We cate

Participant Evaluation of Twelve-Step Group Linkage for Jailed Women With Alcohol Use Disorder.

Jailed women are an underserved population with elevated rates of alcohol use disorders. Brief jail stays make delivery of case management and traditional alcohol treatment impractical yet women face significant reentry challenges with few help resources. Accounting for these challenges, linking jailed women with a twelve-step program volunteer for a one-on-one meeting has been hypothesized to provide a means of support that can transition with women after jail discharge. In-jail meetings are theoretically consistent with the common twelve-step practice of conducting twelve-step calls. The acc
