Fabrication of a Chitosan-Gelatin/Polylactic Acid Bilayer Active Film Loaded with Tannic Acid for Enhancing Shelf-Life of Refrigerated Baby Clams.

Active bilayer (BL) packaging films were developed by depositing chitosan/fish gelatin blend containing tannic acid (TA) at varying levels (1, 3, and 5%; w/w) onto a polylactic acid layer. Augmenting TA levels enhanced strength (17.27 MPa to 27.57 MPa) but reduced flexibility (85.03% to ~38%) due to enhanced polymer cross-linking induced by TA, as confirmed by FTIR. The films exhibited exceptional UV-blocking capabilities, in which UVB protection reached 98.34% and 100% for films with 1% and 3% TA, respectively. SEM micrographs revealed uniform dispersion of TA with defect-free matrices. The a

[Endogenous production and physiological functions of hydrogen sulfide in facultative anaerobic bacteria].

H2S is the third gaseous signaling molecule next to nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, but studies on its physiological functions in bacteria are just emerging. In this paper, we review recent findings regarding endogenous production and physiological functions of H2S in facultative anaerobic bacteria, partly based on our own research on Shewanella oneidensis. There are two principal H2S producing pathways in S. oneidensis:one is through cysteine degradation, and the other is via inorganic sulfur respiration. Endogenous H2S could either benefit mutual growing bacteria by supplying energy and in

Bioelectronic Photocommutator to Regulate Extracellular Electron Transfer Circuits for Microbial Photovoltaic Energy Storage.

Precise control over bioelectronic circuits is crucial for advancing bioelectrochemical systems, yet achieving dynamic, external regulation of electron flow has remained a fundamental challenge. Here, we create a biotic-abiotic hybrid system where the biosynthesized cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) are interfaced with the extracellular electron transfer (EET) pathway of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, forming a bioelectronic photocommutator. This biotic-abiotic hybrid enables light-dependent, bidirectional control of electron transfer. Under 405 nm illumination, the system enhances outward E

Surfactant-doped PEDOT films as dual-function bioelectronic coatings with enhanced charge storage capacity and antibiofilm activity.

Biofilm-associated infections pose a persistent challenge for medical devices, motivating the development of multifunctional coatings that combine electrochemical performance with antibacterial functionality. Conducting polymers such as poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) are attractive for bioelectronic interfaces, yet pristine PEDOT provides limited control over bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Here, we report a dual-function coating based on PEDOT electropolymerized in the presence of the quaternary ammonium surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) on flexible ITO/PE

Identification and functional characterization of annexin A2 in half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis).

Annexin A2 (AnxA2), belonging to the annexin family, plays a crucial role in immune responses. In this study, the cDNA of the AnxA2 gene was identified in half-smooth tongue sole, Cynoglossus semilaevis. The transcript of AnxA2 gene in C. semilaevis (CsAnxA2) showed broad tissue distribution, with the highest expression level observed in the gut. CsAnxA2 expression was significantly up-regulated in the intestine, spleen, and kidney tissues following exposure to Shewanella algae. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that CsAnxA2 was predominantly expressed in epithelial cells and significantly

Capacity, stability and energy requirement of divalent mercury uptake by non-methylating/non-demethylating bacteria.

Methylmercury (MeHg) uptake by demethylating bacteria and inorganic divalent mercury [Hg(II)] uptake by methylating bacteria have been extensively investigated because uptake is the initial step of the intracellular Hg transformation. However, MeHg and Hg(II) uptake by non-methylating/non-demethylating bacteria is overlooked, which may play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of mercury concerning their ubiquitous presence in the environment. Here we report that Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, a model strain of non-methylating/non-demethylating bacteria, can take up and immobilize MeHg

Genome analysis of a coral-associated bacterial consortium highlights complementary hydrocarbon degradation ability and other beneficial mechanisms for the host.

Here we report the oil degradation genetic potential of six oil-degrading bacteria (ODB), previously used as a bioremediation consortium, isolated from the hydrocoral Millepora alcicornis and seawater. The strains were identified as Halomonas sp. (LC_1), Cobetia sp. (LC_6), Pseudoalteromonas shioyasakiensis (LC_2), Halopseudomonas aestusnigri (LC_3), Shewanella algae (LC_4), and Brucella intermedia (LC_5). The taxonomic identification differed from that of the original paper when we used whole genome gene markers instead of just 16S rRNA gene. Genes responsible for the degradation of aromatic

Isolation of anaerobic respiratory mutants of Shewannella putrefaciens and genetic analysis of mutants deficient in anaerobic growth on Fe3+.

A genetic approach was used to study (dissimilatory) ferric iron (Fe3+) reduction in Shewanella putrefaciens 200. Chemical mutagenesis procedures and two rapid plate assays were developed to facilitate the screening of Fe3+ reduction-deficient mutants. Sixty-two putative Fe3+ reduction-deficient mutants were identified, and each was subsequently tested for its ability to grow anaerobically on various compounds as sole terminal electron acceptors, including Fe3+, nitrate (NO3-), nitrite (NO2-), manganese oxide (Mn4+), sulfite (SO3(2-)), thiosulfate (S2O3(2-)), trimethylamine N-oxide, and fumara

Fish blood, an underutilized fish-processing byproduct, can serve as a sustainable precursor for multifunctional carbon dots (CDs). However, CDs synthesis from fish blood and the use of CDs for food preservation have not been explored. CDs were synthesized from different fractions of Asian seabass blood, including whole blood (WB-CDs), plasma (PB-CDs), and blood cells (CB-CDs). Physicochemical, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and preservative properties were evaluated. All synthesized CDs exhibited nanoscale dimensions, with good dispersion and distinct morphology. All CDs possessed UV-shielding c

Mechanistic insights into aggregation process of graphene oxide and bacterial cells in microbial reduction of ferrihydrite.

Microbial reduction of ferrihydrite is prevalent in natural environments and plays an important role in reductive dissolution of Fe(III) minerals. With consistent release of anthropogenic graphene oxide (GO) into water bodies, new changes in the Fe(III)-reducing microorganisms/ferrihydrite binary system demand attention. Herein, we focused on the interaction of GO and bacterial cells in view of colloidal stability and interfacial forces, and on the consequences for microbial ferrihydrite reduction. The results showed that the addition of GO decreased the bioreduction efficiency of ferrihydrite

Mechanisms of polystyrene microplastic degradation by the microbially driven Fenton reaction.

Natural hydroxyl radical (·OH) production, which partially occurs through the microbially driven Fenton reaction, can enhance the degradation of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs). However, ·OH causes damage to microorganisms, which might in turn restrain the microbially driven Fenton reaction. Thus, whether PS-MPs can be continuously degraded by the microbially driven Fenton reaction and how they are degraded are still unknown. A pure-culture system using Shewanella putrefaciens 200 was set up to explore the effect and mechanism of microbially driven Fenton reaction on PS-MP degradation. In a

Metagenomics diversity analysis of sulfate-reducing bacteria and their impact on biocorrosion and mitigation approach using an organometallic inhibitor.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have impacted the biocorrosion process for various industrial sectors, especially in the oil and gas industry. The higher stability over extreme conditions is the key parameter for their survival in such environments. So far, many materials have been tried to minimize or control the growth of SRB. In the present study, an organo-metallic compound of the zinc sorbate (ZS) was successfully synthesized by the simple co-precipitation method and its improved antibacterial activity against SRB. The SRB consortia are enriched from the sub-surface soil sample and identi

Microbial Communities of Seawater and Coastal Soil of Russian Arctic Region and Their Potential for Bioremediation from Hydrocarbon Pollutants.

The development of Arctic regions leads to pollution of marine and coastal environments with oil and petroleum products. The purpose of this work was to determine the diversity of microbial communities in seawater, as well as in littoral and coastal soil, and the potential ability of their members to degrade hydrocarbons degradation and to isolate oil-degrading bacteria. Using high-throughput sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene, the dominance of bacteria in polar communities was shown, the proportion of archaea did not exceed 2% (of the total number of sequences in the libraries).
