Reading achievement among deaf students typically lags significantly behind hearing peers, a situation that has changed little despite decades of research. This lack of progress and recent findings indicating that deaf students face many of the same challenges in comprehending sign language as they do in comprehending text suggest that difficulties frequently observed in their learning from text may involve more than just reading. Two experiments examined college students' learning of material from science texts. Passages were presented to deaf (signing) students in print or American Sign Lang

We report a 27-year-old woman with chronic auditory agnosia following Landau-Kleffner Syndrome (LKS) diagnosed at age 4 1/2. She grew up in the hearing/speaking community with some exposure to manually coded English and American Sign Language (ASL). Manually coded (signed) English is her preferred mode of communication. Comprehension and production of spoken language remain severely compromised. Disruptions in auditory processing can be observed in tests of pitch and duration, suggesting that her disorder is not specific to language. Linguistic analysis of signed, spoken, and written English i

Recent neuropsychological studies in neurological patients and healthy subjects suggest a close functional relationship between the brain systems for language and action. Facilitation and inhibition effects of motor system activity on language processing have been demonstrated as well as causal effects in the reverse direction, from language processes on motor excitability or performance. However, as the documented effects between motor and language systems were sometimes facilitatory and sometimes inhibitory, the "sign" of these effects still remains to be explained. In a previous study, we r

PURPOSE: This commentary emphasizes the child's position and the right to develop language that enables communication with a parent who has deafblindness. We argue that societal services have a responsibility to ensure that this right is fulfilled. Deafblindness affects access to information and communication and has implications for family life when a parent has deafblindness. In such families, shared communication is essential for emotional bonds, parenting, and children's development, yet it often requires adaptations beyond spoken or visual sign language, including tactile and social hapti

This is a report of deaf children who demonstrated the ability to quickly learn hypnotic skills and apply them effectively to the management of their problems. The children were taught hypnosis through American Sign Language, their preferred mode of communication. As with hypnosis with hearing children, we focused upon induction with fantasy and imaginative involvement, creation in imagination of a metaphor for, or imagery of, the desired outcome, and associated sense of pride (ego-strengthening), positive expectation, and teaching self-hypnosis to emphasize the importance of repeated, daily p

Our study investigates how language proficiency impacts cognitive processing in the brain. We focused on congenitally and early deaf adults, where individual differences in language access during development significantly influence language proficiency and cognitive function. This variability in language backgrounds and skills allows us to explore the influence of early language experience on the large-scale brain networks that support cognition. We used functional MRI in a group of deaf adults with diverse language backgrounds and a control group of hearing participants. We hypothesized that

Limited access to spoken and signed language is a worldwide phenomenon affecting deaf children. Language delay caused by impeded language acquisition has negative cascading effects on deaf children's learning and development. In the event of stymied language development, deaf students exhibit highly errored writing and commit errors unseen in the writing of hearing students. There is a need for specialized tools to evaluate and monitor the progress of deaf students' written language in ways that can inform instruction. The Structured Analysis of Written Language (SAWL), developed for this purp

Deaf epistemology, which focuses on the unique ways deaf individuals navigate and experience the auditory world, has become a critical area of study in recent years, particularly in the U.S. This literature review explores key themes in deaf U.S. epistemology, focusing on the comparison between traditional (hearing-centered) epistemology and deaf epistemology, as well as the influences of identity, culture, and sign language. Findings reveal that deaf epistemology in the U.S. is deeply shaped by identity, cultural pride, Deafhood, and the recognition of American Sign Language and situated home

BACKGROUND: Emergency Department (ED) triage requires rapid assessment of acuity under time pressure with incomplete information. Existing AI triage systems require complete clinical data, including vital signs, before generating a prediction, and so cannot support the sequential, information-gathering reality of triage in which patients accumulate in queues before vital signs are collected. Pre-vital queue prioritisation, deciding which patients are seen next before vital signs exist, remains unaddressed.
OBJECTIVE: To design and evaluate ED-Triage-Agent (ETA), a multi-agent large language m

Childhood apraxia of speech is a neurologic speech sound disorder in which children have difficulty constructing words and sounds due to poor motor planning and coordination of the articulators required for speech sound production. We report the case of a 3-year-old boy strongly suspected to have childhood apraxia of speech at 18 months of age who used multimodal communication to facilitate language development throughout his work with a speech language pathologist. In 18 months of an intensive structured program, he exhibited atypical rapid improvement, progressing from having no intelligible

This study was a comparison of the effects of oral speech with total communication (speech plus sign language) training on the ability of mentally retarded children to repeat 4-word sentences. Three children were chosen who used single words to communicate but who did not combine words into complete sentences. Three sentence pairs were trained, with each pair having one sentence trained using oral methods and an equivalent one trained using the total communication approach. Both training procedures involved chaining sentence parts, reinforcement, and prompting. Oral methods involved presenting

Ten moderately retarded adults learned a set of 16 logographic signs. Subjects were asked to demonstrate sentences formed from the signs using dolls and other toys. They were also asked to pick out signs and form a sentence after watching the experimenter demonstrate an event. All subjects were able to demonstrate sentences with only minor errors. Only about half were completely successful in constructing four- and five-word sentences. The method of construction of most subjects revealed a semantic--syntactic disengagement; the signs were chosen in nonsentence order, apparently in order of sal

Health information about inherited forms of cancer and the role of family history in cancer risk for the American Sign Language (ASL) Deaf community, a linguistic and cultural community, needs improvement. Cancer genetic education materials available in English print format are not accessible for many sign language users because English is not their native or primary language. Per Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, the level of literacy for printed health education materials should not be higher than 6th grade level (~ 11 to 12 years old), and even with this recommendat

The development of American Sign Language (ASL) literacy (or signacy) in deaf students is influenced by the exposure and instruction they receive, yet research on current ASL teaching practices remains limited. This study investigates how teachers in deaf education approach ASL literacy instruction through a nationwide survey and focus groups. The research explored six key areas: curriculum and standards, instructional methods, time allocation, genre instruction, and teacher preparation. Findings indicate that while ASL literacy instruction is recognized as an important component of bilingual

Fingerspelling and its relationship with literacy skills among deaf and hard of hearing children who use American Sign Language is an increasingly popular research topic. However, there is limited research on whether reading interventions that systematically include fingerspelling are more effective for improving literacy skills than reading interventions that do not. In an adapted alternating-treatment single-case study, the authors contrasted the number of words learned under three conditions: a productive fingerspelling condition, in which word reading was taught through activities that emp

Language production involves complex yet productively varying motor behavior. Rule-governed combinations yield a finite set of formational units combined in an infinite number of ways. The creativity of language ensures that no particular articulation will be highly automatized. Linguistic articulation is highly complex and varied. As such, it differs from the other more automatized motor behaviors typically studied such as learned movements in apraxia studies or repetitive behavior as occurs in walking or other everyday activities. Language also strives to maintain a balance between ease of a

Deaf patients depend on intermediate vision for interpersonal communication. Deaf presbyopes are at a particular disadvantage since they are usually corrected for near and far vision with bifocals without consideration of their intermediate vision. Progressive addition lenses were used in this study to provide an intermediate correction for a group of deaf presbyopes. The patients' communication ability was tested through Varilux II lenses and habitual bifocals on a series of standardized lip reading and sign language tests. The patients showed better visual communication skills with the progr

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment has been reported in patients with cerebellar phenotype of multiple system atrophy (MSA-C), yet this area remains largely unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the cognitive profile of MSA-C patients and assessed its association with neuroimaging features, specifically the hot-cross bun (HCB) sign.
METHODS: This retrospective study encompassed 210 patients diagnosed with MSA-C between 2019 and 2023. Each patient underwent a thorough clinical evaluation, a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.
RESULTS: MSA-C pa
