Perceptual heterogeneity in developmental prosopagnosia: The role of the right OFA.

Individuals with lifelong face recognition impairment, developmental prosopagnosia (DP), provide a unique testbed for understanding the neural mechanisms of face recognition. Although the right occipital face area (OFA) and right fusiform face area (FFA) are critical for face processing, studies examining their functionality in DP have been inconclusive. Two barriers that have prevented the development of a neural theory of DP are behavioural heterogeneity and limited sample sizes. Using one of the largest samples of DPs collected to examine OFA/FFA function, we tested whether face selectivity

From Early Behavioral Intervention to School: A Systematic Evaluation of Parents' Perspectives on the Quality of the Autism Services During the Transition to Kindergarten.

Research emphasizes the importance of seamless transitions from Early Behavioral Intervention (EBI) to school-based services, but formal support during this critical period remains limited, leading to decreased parental satisfaction with autism services. This study aimed to systematically document parents' perception of the quality of services received during the transition from EBI to kindergarten, along with the predictors of this perception. The study adopted a prospective longitudinal design and relied on a validated evaluation framework, the Evaluation of the Trajectory in Autism for Pare

Time perception in astronauts on board the International Space Station.

We perceive the environment through an elaborate mental representation based on a constant integration of sensory inputs, knowledge, and expectations. Previous studies of astronauts on board the International Space Station have shown that the mental representation of space, such as the perception of object size, distance, and depth, is altered in orbit. Because the mental representations of space and time have some overlap in neural networks, we hypothesized that perception of time would also be affected by spaceflight. Ten astronauts were tested before, during, and after a 6-8-month spaceflig

Panic attacks and perception of inspiratory resistive loads in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

RATIONALE: Panic attacks are common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and the prevalence of panic disorder is at least 10 times higher than in the general population. In the current study, we examined resistive load perception in patients with COPD with and without panic attacks. OBJECTIVES: We tested competing hypotheses, based on conflicting results of earlier studies, that those patients with COPD with panic attacks or panic disorder would show either heightened or blunted perception of dyspnea as the magnitude of inspiratory resistive loads increased. METHODS: We compared

Does speed equal distance over duration in perception?

If the perceived speed of a moving object equals the perceived distance traveled in perceived duration, speed perception should inherit distance illusions, unless they elicit proportional duration illusions. Three experiments systematically evaluated whether an object appears to move faster (a) along subjectively longer horizontal lines (Müller-Lyer distance illusion) and (b) around subjectively larger circles (Ebbinghaus size illusion). The predicted Müller-Lyer and Ebbinghaus speed illusions were consistently absent across absolute (Experiments 1a and 1b), binary comparative (Experiments 2a

Self-Perception for Vocal Attractiveness and Its Acoustic Correlates Among Non-Dysphonic Adults in Shanghai.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the acoustic correlates of self-perceived vocal attractiveness and its constituent dimensions among non-dysphonic adults in Shanghai, and to examine potential sexually dimorphic patterns in these relationships. METHODS: Forty-two healthy adults (19 males, 23 females) aged 18-45 years, all native Shanghai residents, were recruited. Participants performed vowel phonation and a connected speech reading task to extract morphological parameters (vocal tract length, formant dispersion) and dynamic parameters (F0, F0 standard deviation, harmonics-to-noise rat

Tongue-Brain-Transported ZnO Nanoparticles Induce Abnormal Taste Perception.

Nanoparticles (NPs) can be transported to the brain, especially through nerves, because of their small size and high biological activity. Previous studies confirmed that zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs can enter the brain through the tongue-brain pathway, but it is unclear whether they will further affect synaptic transmission and brain perception. In this study, it is found that tongue-brain-transported ZnO NPs can cause a decrease in taste sensitivity and taste aversion learning ability, indicating abnormal taste perception. Moreover, the release of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents, the frequ

Evolution of subjective visual vertical perturbation after stroke.

OBJECTIVE: The perception of visual verticality is often perturbed after stroke and might be an underlying component of imbalance. The aim of this study was to describe the evolution of visual vertical (VV) perturbation and to investigate the factors affecting it. METHODS: Thirty patients with hemiplegia after a single hemispheric stroke (17 left lesioned [LL] and 13 right lesioned [RL]) were studied. Visual verticality was tested within 45 days of stroke, and then at 3 and 6 months. Subjects sat in a dark room and adjusted a luminous rod to the vertical position. The differences between pati

Opposite size illusions for inverted faces and letters.

Words are the primary means by which we communicate meaning and ideas, while faces provide important social cues. Studying visual illusions involving faces and words can elucidate the hierarchical processing of information as different regions of the brain are specialised for face recognition and word processing. A size illusion has previously been demonstrated for faces, whereby an inverted face is perceived as larger than the same stimulus upright. Here, two experiments replicate the face size illusion, and investigate whether the illusion is also present for individual letters (Experiment 1

Assessing organizational social context in surgical domains: perspectives of nursing staff and first-line nurse managers and their associations with nurse-focused outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Nurse shortages underscore the need to understand how organizational culture and climate affect nurse-focused outcomes in surgical care. This study analyzed how nursing staff and first-line nurse managers perceive organizational culture and climate in surgical domains and explored the differences in their perceptions. Furthermore, it analyzed how these perceptions and discrepancies correlate with nurse-focused outcomes, such as nursing staff sickness absences and gross turnover. Additionally, the study investigated how unit sizes and care settings influence the relationship between

Evaluation of Fine Structure Coding in New Cochlear Implant Users with Tonotopic Fitting: a Prospective, Randomized, Double-Blind, Cross-Over Study.

OBJECTIVES.: Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of tonotopic fitting on speech-in-noise perception in new cochlear implant (CI) users. However, these studies used different coding strategies (CIS, HDCIS, FSP, FS4, or mixed) with different frequency spectra. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of fine structure (FS) cues on speech perception in noise and in quiet and music perception, in new CI users with a tonotopic fitting map. METHODS.: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, 2-period crossover study was performed from April 2023 to June 2024. All participants had to

Residual target detection as a function of stimulus size.

In the visual field defects of 5 patients with damage in the postgeniculate part of the primary visual system, residual detectability of an achromatic intensity target was tested as a function of target diameter, which was 10, 27, 44, 69 and 116 min of arc of visual angle. The set of 5 targets was presented at 3 different intensity ranges on a background of low photopic luminance. Within this size range residual detectability was a V-shaped function of target size with a dip at 44 min of arc. This result is discussed in relation to the centre/surround organization of receptive and perceptive f

The pyramidal cell in cognition: a comparative study in human and monkey.

Here we present evidence that the pyramidal cell phenotype varies markedly in the cortex of different anthropoid species. Regional and species differences in the size of, number of bifurcations in, and spine density of the basal dendritic arbors cannot be explained by brain size. Instead, pyramidal cell morphology appears to accord with the specialized cortical function these cells perform. Cells in the prefrontal cortex of humans are more branched and more spinous than those in the temporal and occipital lobes. Moreover, cells in the prefrontal cortex of humans are more branched and more spin

Visual function and pattern visual evoked response in optic neuritis.

The disparity between clinical visual function and pattern visual evoked response (VER) was studied in 53 patients who had suffered an attack of optic neuritis (ON) more than six months before. The visual functions tested included Snellen visual acuity, colour vision, visual field, and contrast sensitivity. The effect of pattern presentation, check size, and luminance was tested by recording VERs with several stimulus configurations. VER amplitudes were found to be associated with the outcome of all four clinical tests, independently of check size, luminance, or the presentation method used. O

Preserved Object Weight Processing after Bilateral Lateral Occipital Complex Lesions.

Object interaction requires knowledge of the weight of an object, as well as its shape. The lateral occipital complex (LOC), an area within the ventral visual pathway, is well known to be critically involved in processing visual shape information. Recently, however, LOC has also been implicated in coding object weight before grasping-a result that is surprising because weight is a nonvisual object property that is more relevant for motor interaction than visual perception. Here, we examined the causal role of LOC in perceiving heaviness and in determining appropriate fingertip forces during ob

Are different affordances subserved by different neural pathways?

This paper questions whether affordances are allied exclusively to dorsal stream processing within the visual system, or whether in fact different affordances are subserved by functionally independent neural pathways. Using case study evidence from patients with various visual pathologies, I argue that affordances can be categorised into type based upon their respective neurological underpinning. Such categorisation has implications for the extent to which affordances are consciously perceived or non-consciously 'picked up' within the optic array, as well as whether they indicate merely potent

Multiple levels of visual object constancy revealed by event-related fMRI of repetition priming.

We conducted two event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments to investigate the neural substrates of visual object recognition in humans. We used a repetition-priming method with visual stimuli recurring at unpredictable intervals, either with the same appearance or with changes in size, viewpoint or exemplar. Lateral occipital and posterior inferior temporal cortex showed lower activity for repetitions of both real and non-sense objects; fusiform and left inferior frontal regions showed decreases for repetitions of only real objects.
