The Ceylon krait (Bungarus ceylonicus) is a highly venomous elapid snake endemic to Sri Lanka. Its bites are rare and only seven reports are found in the literature. Therefore, the clinical manifestations and natural history of envenoming of Ceylon krait are not well studied yet. Neuroparalysis is the main clinical manifestation of their bites. We report two cases of proven Ceylon krait bites of two young snake keepers working in a serpentarium. They developed acute neuroparalysis, abdominal pain and a period of amnesia. The first patient developed myalgia and increased level of serum creatine

Snake bite is an important cause for acute kidney injury (AKI) in the tropics and the victims are often otherwise healthy young adults without conventional risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Available literature on long-term outcomes of AKI -snake envenomation is limited, with only two small retrospective studies with follow-up periods of two years or less. In a hospital-based prospective and retrospective follow-up study, all consecutive adult patients who developed AKI and discharged alive were recruited in the prospective group and for retrospective analysis, we retrieved medica

SnakeMap is a national cloud-based, veterinary snakebite registry. It was designed to prospectively collect data of the clinical circumstances and temporospatial information on cases of snake envenomation in dogs and cats. We herein introduce the project and summarise the data from the first 4 years of SnakeMap. The registry is a veterinary community-based online database allowing case entry from veterinary hospitals across Australia. Registry data comprise hospital characteristics, patient characteristics, envenoming snake type, treatment and outcome variables, including time and geolocation

This article examines an international controversy over the most visible scientific event of Brazilian physiology in the nineteenth century. In 1881, Brazilian scientist João Baptista Lacerda stated that he had found an efficient antidote to the poison of Brazilian snakes: permanganate of potash (nowadays, potassium permanganate). His findings were given great publicity in Brazil and traveled rapidly around the world. Scientists, especially in France, contradicted Lacerda's claims. They argued that permanganate of potash could not be a genuine antidote to snake bites since it could not neutral

Several cases of Heterodon nasicus bites producing various symptoms have already been described. In this paper, a survey was conducted among Polish breeders of this species, where 47.7% of the respondents admitted that their snakes had tried to bite them, and 31.4% fed their snakes with their bare hands. When asked whether they feared being bitten by this snake during daily handling, an overwhelming majority of the respondents declared (74% of total negative responses, n = 63) that they were not afraid of being bitten. Based on the popularity of H. nasicus as a pet animal, it can only be assum

Despite the biological relevance and abundance of non-front-fanged colubroid snakes, little is known about the medical significance of the majority these species. Herein, we described bites by two green racer species of colubroid snakes, with respect to clinical, epidemiological, and biological features. We retrospectively analyzed proven cases of Philodryas olfersii and Philodryas aestiva bites. Only cases in which the causative animal was brought and identified by an expert were included. Analysis included variables related to the snake, patient demographics, clinical findings, whole blood c

Sea snake venom is extremely toxic, and it can induce severe respiratory failure and cause high mortality. The most effective first aid treatment for sea snake bites is to inject antivenom as soon as possible. However, in China, there are only four types of terrestrial snake antivenoms, none of which are effective in the treatment of sea snake bites. In order to develop an antivenom for the dominant species of sea snakes in Chinese seas, Hydrophis curtus venom (HcuV) was chosen as the antigen to immunize horses. From immune plasma, a high-titer Hydrophis curtus antivenom (HcuAV) was prepared.

This study was performed to assess the ability of polyvalent snake venom anti-serum, produced by the Egyptian Organization for Biological Products & Vaccines (VACSERA), to neutralize several toxic activities of snake venoms, not only of those included in the antivenom mixture, but also some additional venoms of snakes from Egyptian, African, and Middle Eastern habitats. In general, the results revealed that polyvalent snake venom anti-serum from VACSERA is highly effective in neutralizing Egyptian snake venoms, especially Naja haje, Naja nigricolles, Naja pallida, Cerastes cerastes, Cerastes c

RATIONALE: Acute cerebral infarction after snake bites is rare. The underlying mechanism causing the thrombotic process remains complex and unknown.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We herein describe a 49-year-old female who was bitten by a Trimeresurus stejnegeri. After 4 days of biting, she developed acute ischemic infarct.
DIAGNOSIS: The patient exhibited right side weakness and speech disturbances. Brain computed tomography (CT) scan showed no sign about cerebral hemorrhage symptoms, and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed acute ischemic infarct in the left territory. The patient confirmed a

60 people who had been bitten by the carpet viper, Echis carinatus, were seen in four months at Zungeru Health Centre, in North West Nigeria, where snake-bite patients have recently occupied 10% of beds. Health statistics greatly underestimate the frequency, morbidity, and mortality of snake bite in the rural tropics and further studies will probably confirm other areas endemic for E. carinatus within its vast distribution zone. Regular supplies of effective antivenom are crucial to gain a community's confidence in conventional, as opposed to traditional, treatment. Paramedical staff in a rura

Snake venoms contain toxins that activate the coagulation network and cause venom-induced consumption coagulopathy. A previously developed mathematical model of the coagulation network was refined and used to describe and predict the time course of changes in the coagulation factors following envenomation by Brown snake (Pseudonaja spp.), Tiger snake (Notechis scutatus), Rough-scaled snake (Tropidechis carinatus) and Hoplocephalus spp. (Stephens banded, Pale headed and Broad headed). Simulations of the time course of the change in coagulation factors were compared to data obtained from a large

INTRODUCTION: The eastern massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus) has the northernmost distribution of any venomous snake in the United States and presents a potential, but little-studied, risk to humans.
METHODS: We quantified the reported incidence of massasauga bites to humans in the Great Lakes states by searching historic and contemporary media reports between 1800 and 2015.
RESULTS: We identified 848 reported massasauga bites across the region, most of which were concentrated along the border of Indiana and Michigan. The number of bites per decade increased into the late 1800s as

Myoglobinuria, renal failure, and muscular weakness or paralysis were noted in two patients following sea-snake bite. A pathological study by biopsy showed renal tubular necrosis and myonecrosis. Both patients were treated by haemodialysis, and there was a remarkable improvement in the muscular symptoms. Recovery was complete in both cases. It is believed that muscular paralysis was the effect of hyperkalaemia and uraemia on the muscles sensitized by the toxic effect of the sea-snake venom. Removal of potassium and uraemic factors by dialysis thus led to the rapid improvement of the muscular a

Hypopituitarism can be the sequela of a variety of causes like postpartum pituitary necrosis or Sheehan's syndrome, lymphocytic hypophysitis, trauma and encephalitis. A very rare cause is envenomation by a bite of a Russell's viper. Very few cases with documented imaging findings of chronic pituitary failure resulting from snake bite have been reported. We describe a case of hypopituitarism with clinical, endocrine and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies occurring as a delayed complication of snake bite.

Consequences of bites by the Common adder (Vipera berus) were reviewed in this study. Patients bitten by snakes from different populations may develop variable symptoms due to geographical venom variation. The correct diagnosis of snake bites and the knowledge of the distribution of venomous snake taxa have a crucial impact on snake bite therapy. The characteristic symptoms of patients bitten by V. berus in Hungary are highlighted. The habitat characteristics, seasonal activity and the Hungarian distribution of the adder are described based on literature data, museum specimens and field observ

A limited number of studies have investigated the clinical characteristics of snakebite envenomation by exotic (non-native) snakes in Japan. This study reviewed the literature to determine the status and risk of bites by exotic pet snakes in Japan. We reviewed reports of snakebite due to exotic snakes in Japan published between 2000 and 2022, excluding reports of bites by snakes native to Japan, such as Gloydius blomhoffii, Rhabdophis tigrinus, and Protobothrops flavoviridis. During the study period, 11 exotic snakebites were recorded, involving 11 species. The majority of those bitten (10/11

BACKGROUND: Coral snake bites from Micrurus fulvius and Micrurus tener account for < 1% of all snake bites in North America. Coral snake envenomation may cause significant neurotoxicity, including respiratory insufficiency, and its onset may be delayed up to 13 h.
CASE REPORT: We present a unique patient encounter of M. tener venom exposure through the ocular mucous membranes and a small cutaneous bite, resulting in neurotoxicity. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of systemic neurotoxicity associated with ocular contact with coral snake venom. Our patient developed rapid-onset
