Effects of simulated space environmental conditions on cleanroom microbes.

INTRODUCTION: Microorganisms can have major impacts on the success of NASA's missions, including the integrity of materials, the protection of extraterrestrial environments, the reliability of scientific results, and maintenance of crew health. Robust cleaning and sterilization protocols for spacecraft and associated environments are currently in place in NASA facilities, but microbial contamination should be further controlled and its impact on NASA's missions and science must be minimized. To address this, air and surfaces across cleanrooms and uncontrolled spaces at the Marshall Space Fligh

Biomechanics of healthy subjects during exercise on a simulated vibration isolation and stabilization system.

With long-term space flights being planned for the Moon and Mars, proper countermeasures must be taken to facilitate human health in microgravity environments. Exercise is a vital countermeasure used to prevent bone and muscle loss, among other health interests. Future exploration missions encourage creating an exercise device that is both compact and can be used to properly execute exercise by the astronauts. Current design considerations include interfacing an exercise device with a vibration isolation and stabilization (VIS) system, which is necessary for protecting the spacecraft and sensi

Human torpor: translating insights from nature into manned deep space expedition.

During a long-duration manned spaceflight mission, such as flying to Mars and beyond, all crew members will spend a long period in an independent spacecraft with closed-loop bioregenerative life-support systems. Saving resources and reducing medical risks, particularly in mental heath, are key technology gaps hampering human expedition into deep space. In the 1960s, several scientists proposed that an induced state of suppressed metabolism in humans, which mimics 'hibernation', could be an ideal solution to cope with many issues during spaceflight. In recent years, with the introduction of spe

Design engineering a walking robotic manipulator for in-space assembly missions.

In-Space Services aim to introduce sustainable futuristic technology to support the current and growing orbital ecosystem. As the scale of space missions grows, there is a need for more extensive infrastructures in orbit. In-Space Assembly missions would hold one of the key responsibilities in meeting the increasing demand. In the forthcoming decades, newer infrastructures in the Earth's orbits, which are much more advanced than the International Space Station are needed for in-situ manufacturing, servicing, and astronomical and observational stations. The prospect of in-orbit commissioning a

Microgravity promotes osteoclast activity in medaka fish reared at the international space station.

The bone mineral density (BMD) of astronauts decreases specifically in the weight-bearing sites during spaceflight. It seems that osteoclasts would be affected by a change in gravity; however, the molecular mechanism involved remains unclear. Here, we show that the mineral density of the pharyngeal bone and teeth region of TRAP-GFP/Osterix-DsRed double transgenic medaka fish was decreased and that osteoclasts were activated when the fish were reared for 56 days at the international space station. In addition, electron microscopy observation revealed a low degree of roundness of mitochondria in

Maternal exposure to traffic-related air pollution and birth defects in Massachusetts.

Exposures to particulate matter with diameter of 2.5µm or less (PM2.5) may influence risk of birth defects. We estimated associations between maternal exposure to prenatal traffic-related air pollution and risk of cardiac, orofacial, and neural tube defects among Massachusetts births conceived 2001 through 2008. Our analyses included 2729 cardiac, 255 neural tube, and 729 orofacial defects. We used satellite remote sensing, meteorological and land use data to assess PM2.5 and traffic-related exposures (distance to roads and traffic density) at geocoded birth addresses. We calculated adjusted o

Cold-Water CO2 Geysers as Ocean World Plume Analogs: Investigation of Habitability Indicators in Crystal and Champagne Geysers Pre- and Posteruption.

Ocean world plumes at Enceladus, Triton, and possibly Europa are astrobiologically significant. These active processes may transport fresh material from potentially habitable subsurface environments to the surface and atmosphere/exosphere, where they can be accessed by spacecraft and telescopic observations. However, it is currently unclear if chemical fractionation or other modification processes might occur during subsurface transport and eruption and potentially lead to changes in concentrations of habitability indicators relative to the source reservoir. To explore this phenomenon in a nat

Simulated Microgravity Accelerates Alloy Corrosion by Aspergillus sp. via the Enhanced Production of Organic Acids.

Metal corrosion caused by Aspergillus sp. was shown to be significantly enhanced on a space station, but its mechanism is still unknown. To simulate this on earth, the corrosion capability of A. carbonarius on five metal sheets was investigated under simulated microgravity. Also, the effect of metal ions on growth and organic acid production was determined. Results showed that A. carbonarius could corrode all five types of metal, including Ti alloy, aluminum alloy, iron, and aluminum and copper sheet, and the corrosion was intensified under simulated microgravity. Energy dispersive X-ray spect

Comparative genomic analysis of Klebsiella pneumonia (LCT-KP214) and a mutant strain (LCT-KP289) obtained after spaceflight.

BACKGROUND: With the development of space science, it is important to analyze the relationship between the space environment and genome variations that might cause phenotypic changes in microbes. Klebsiella pneumoniae is commonly found on the human body and is resistant to multiple drugs. To study space-environment-induced genome variations and drug resistance changes, K. pneumoniae was carried into outer space by the Shenzhou VIII spacecraft. RESULTS: The K. pneumoniae strain LCT-KP289 was selected after spaceflight based on its phenotypic differences compared to the ground-control strain. A

Multiple simulated spaceflight stressors impact cardiac fibrosis, calcium dynamics, immune function, cytokines and gene variants in rat, Rattus norvegicus.

Space radiation and microgravity pose significant health risks for astronauts conducting deep space exploration. The impact of galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) and weightlessness alone, and their combined effects on cardiac disease, the immune system, cytokines and calcium dynamics should be understood before undertaking such missions. Male WAG/RijCmcr rats, Rattus norvegicus, 8-9 months old were hind limb unloaded (HLU) to simulate exposure to microgravity for 5 days before, during, and 25 days after whole-body exposure to a simplified GCR simulation (simGCRsim) dose of 1.5 Gy that was adminis

Thermal Stress and Temperature Analysis of Integrated Protection-Thermal Control Multilayer Films Under Laser Irradiation in Alternating High and Low Temperatures.

With the rapid advancement of space-based laser weapon technologies, on-orbit safety of spacecraft such as satellites is confronted with severe laser threats. To meet the demands for film system optimization and reliability improvement of thin films integrating space laser protection and thermal control functions, this study takes the Graphene/Ag/Al2O3/SiO2/ITO multilayer thin film structure as the research object. Combined with the space alternating high-low temperature environment and the action of ultra-high-density transient directional heat flux, systematic simulation research on the evol

Ionospheric Weather at Two Starlink Launches during Two-Phase Geomagnetic Storms.

The launch of a series of Starlink internet satellites on 3 February 2022 (S-36), and 7 July 2022 (S-49), coincided with the development of two-phase geomagnetic storms. The first launch S-36 took place in the middle of the moderate two-phase space weather storm, which induced significant technological consequences. After liftoff on 3 February at 18:13 UT, all Starlink satellites reached an initial altitude of 350 km in perigee and had to reach an altitude of ~550 km after the maneuver. However, 38 of 49 launched spacecrafts did not reach the planned altitude, left orbit due to increased drag

Modulation of the DNA-damage response to HZE particles by shielding.

Ions of high atomic number and energy (HZE particles) pose a significant cancer risk to astronauts on prolonged space missions. On Earth, similar ions are being used for targeted cancer therapy. The properties of these particles can be drastically altered during passage through spacecraft shielding, therapy beam modulators, or the human body. Here, we have used pertinent responses to DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) to understand the consequences of energy loss versus nuclear fragmentation of Fe ions during passage through shielding or tissue-equivalent materials. Phosphorylation of histone H2A

Percutaneous bladder catheterization in microgravity.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary obstruction (UO) or failure to void has been observed during several episodes of short-duration spaceflight, necessitating bladder catheterization. It should be considered a possible medical condition in long-duration space missions as well. Antiemetics used early in space flight add to the risk and severity of voiding problems, along with the sensory and psychological peculiarities of voiding without gravity and in the unusual setting of a spacecraft. Urolithiasis due to the above-normal calcium excretion increases the risk of UO in long duration space missions. Finally,

Explosive events on the Sun.

I describe two of the most dynamic and highly energetic phenomena in the Solar System--the explosive flares that can occur when plasma is confined by magnetic fields and the large-scale ejections of material known as 'coronal mass ejections'. These explosive events are poorly understood and yet occur in a variety of contexts in the Universe, ranging from planetary magnetospheres to active galactic nuclei. Understanding why flares and coronal mass ejections occur is a major goal across a wide range of space physics and astrophysics. Although explosive events from the Sun have dramatic effects o

Psychological health maintenance on Space Station Freedom.

The scheduling of crew rotations for up to 180 days on Space Station Freedom presents a special challenge for behavioral scientists who are tasked with providing psychological support for the crews, their families, and mission flight controllers. Preflight psychological support planning may minimize the negative impact of psychological and social issues on mission success, as well as assist NASA management in making real-time mission planning decisions in the event of a significant social event (for example, the death of a family member). During flight, the combined psychological, emotional, a

Consensus Guideline for Care of Patients in the Prehospital and Aerospace Settings with Exposures to Hydrazine and Hydrazine Derivatives.

OBJECTIVES: Hydrazine (HZ) and Hydrazine Derivative (HZ-D) exposures pose health risks to people in industrial and aerospace settings. Several recent systematic reviews and case series have highlighted common clinical presentations and management strategies. Given the low frequency at which HZ and HZ-D exposures occur, a strong evidence base on which to develop an evidence-based guideline does not exist at this time. Therefore, the aim of this project is to establish a consensus guideline for prehospital care of patients with exposures to HZ and HZ-Ds. METHODS: A modified Delphi technique was

Pilots, Astronauts, and the Aerospace Microbiota: A Narrative Review of Occupational Impact.

The human microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining health and preventing disease; however, the effects of occupational exposure on the microbiota of aircrew and astronauts are not fully understood. This narrative review aims to synthesize the current knowledge on microbiota alterations in aerospace medicine, assess the potential of probiotics as a countermeasure, and identify key gaps that warrant further research. The references were identified through searching PubMed for English articles published between 2010 and 2024, using keywords related to microbiota, probiotics, aviation, space

Dependence of Incidence Angle and Flux Density in the Damage Effect of Atomic Oxygen on Kapton Film.

Kapton film is a polymeric material widely used on low-Earth-orbit (LEO) spacecraft surfaces. In the LEO environment, atomic oxygen (AO) is spaceflight materials' most destructive environmental factor. The erosion mechanism of AO on Kapton films has long been an important issue, where the parameter dependence of the AO effect has received increasing attention. Studies of AO energy and cumulative flux have been extensively carried out, while the influence mechanism of the incidence angle and flux density is not fully understood. The AO incidence angle and flux density in space are diverse, whic

Comparison of the particle flux measured by Liulin-MO dosimeter in ExoMars TGO science orbit with those calculated by models.

The knowledge of the space radiation environment in spacecraft transition and in Mars vicinity is of importance for the preparation of the human exploration of Mars. ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) was launched on March 14, 2016 and was inserted into circular Mars science orbit (MSO) with a 400 km altitude in March 2018. The Liulin-MO dosimeter is a module of the Fine Resolution Epithermal Neutron Detector (FREND) aboard ExoMars TGO and has been measuring the radiation environment during the TGO interplanetary travel to Mars and continues to do so in the TGO MSO.
