Reading-related wavelength and spatial frequency effects in visual spatial location.

Specific deficits in the processing of transient visual stimuli have been identified in reading-disabled children, and it has been shown that the filtering out of some medium to high spatial frequencies and some visible wavelengths impacts on their performance in a number of visual tasks. To assess further how these light diffusing and colour filtering manipulations might mediate visual processing, this study compared the letter-naming accuracy and visual spatial location judgements of eighteen poor readers with those made by eighteen good readers of the same age. Naming and spatial discrepanc

Visual cognition: a new look at the two-visual systems model.

In this paper, we argue that no valid comparison between visual representations can arise unless provision is made for three critical properties: their direction of fit, their direction of causation and the level of their conceptual content. The conceptual content in turn is a function of the level of processing. Representations arising from earlier stages of processing of visual input have very little or no conceptual content. Higher order representations get their conceptual content from the connections between visual cognition and other parts of the human cognitive system. The two other cri

Anterolateral Entorhinal Cortex Volume Predicted by Altered Intra-Item Configural Processing.

Recent functional imaging studies have proposed that the human entorhinal cortex (ERC) is subdivided into functionally distinct anterolateral (alERC) and posteromedial (pmERC) subregions. The alERC overlaps with regions that are affected earliest by Alzheimer's disease pathology, yet its cognitive function remains poorly understood. Previous human fMRI studies have focused on its role in object memory, but rodent studies on the putatively homologous lateral entorhinal cortex suggest that it also plays an important role in representing spatial properties of objects. To investigate the cognitive

Atypical brain activation of reading processes in children with developmental dyslexia.

Brain activation differences of reading-related processes between dyslexic and normal reading children were localized with functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The children performed tasks that varied in visuospatial, orthographic, phonologic, and semantic processing demands. Enhanced activation of the left extrastriate cortex was found during all tasks in the dyslexic group. During orthographic processing, dyslexic children predominantly showed activation in the right prefrontal cortex, as also occurred during the visuo-spatial task. Normal readers also showed activation in the left p

Left hemispatial neglect and overt orienting in naturalistic conditions: Role of high-level and stimulus-driven signals.

Deficits of visuospatial orienting in brain-damaged patients affected by hemispatial neglect have been extensively investigated. Nonetheless, spontaneous spatial orienting in naturalistic conditions is still poorly understood. Here, we investigated the role played by top-down and stimulus-driven signals in overt spatial orienting of neglect patients during free-viewing of short videos portraying everyday life situations. In Experiment 1, we assessed orienting when meaningful visual events competed on the left and right side of space, and tested whether sensory salience on the two sides biased

Processing of featural and configural aspects of faces is lateralized in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: a TMS study.

Facial recognition relies on distinct and parallel types of processing: featural processing focuses on the individual components of a face (e.g., the shape or the size of the eyes), whereas configural (or "relational") processing considers the spatial interrelationships among the single facial components (e.g., distance of the mouth from the nose). Previous neuroimaging evidence has suggested that featural and configural processes may rely on different brain circuits. By using rTMS, here we show for the first time a double dissociation in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for different aspects of

Beyond reading and spelling: exploring intelligence profiles in individuals with dyslexia through a Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory lens.

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia, a prevalent learning disability, is associated with specific cognitive profiles. This study investigated the cognitive profiles of children and adolescents with dyslexia in Poland utilizing the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory to understand patterns of strengths and weaknesses. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: The study analyzed intelligence assessment data from 3,458 Polish children and adolescents (age 10-19 years) diagnosed with dyslexia. Data were obtained from a national research panel. Participants underwent comprehensive intelligence assessments using the Stanford-Bin

Dissociation between melodic and rhythmic processing during piano performance from musical scores.

When performing or perceiving music, we experience the melodic (spatial) and rhythmic aspects as a unified whole. Moreover, the motor program theory stipulates that the relative timing and the serial order of the movement are invariant features of a motor program. Still, clinical and psychophysical observations suggest independent processing of these two aspects, in both production and perception. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to dissociate between brain areas processing the melodic and the rhythmic aspects during piano playing from musical scores. This behavior requires

Unconscious contextual memory affects early responses in the anterior temporal lobe.

Memory and perception are two tightly interrelated cognitive processes, but the neural level of their interaction remains a matter of debate. Proponents of a late interaction emphasize feedback memory effects on visual processing, whereas others suggest that feed forward processing is affected by memory. In the visual domain, unconscious memory for stable relations among objects is known to influence visually-guided behavior. Recent evidence suggest an early interaction between this form of unconscious memory and visually-driven neural activity: the brain dissociates stable and unstable spatia

Spatial frequency and orientation tuning of spatial visual mechanisms in human albinos.

A masking paradigm was used to measure the spatial frequency and orientation tuning of spatial mechanisms in the albino visual system. Threshold elevation curves obtained in this manner at test spatial frequencies of 0.25 cycles/deg (cpd), 0.50 cpd, and 1 cpd have the same shape as curves obtained from normal subjects at test frequencies two octaves higher. Additional masking studies showed that contrast processing in albinos obeys the same compressive power law as in normals. Thus, spatial mechanisms in albino central vision have normal spatial frequency and orientation bandwidths. As central

Developmental dyscalculia is related to visuo-spatial memory and inhibition impairment.

Developmental dyscalculia is thought to be a specific impairment of mathematics ability. Currently dominant cognitive neuroscience theories of developmental dyscalculia suggest that it originates from the impairment of the magnitude representation of the human brain, residing in the intraparietal sulcus, or from impaired connections between number symbols and the magnitude representation. However, behavioral research offers several alternative theories for developmental dyscalculia and neuro-imaging also suggests that impairments in developmental dyscalculia may be linked to disruptions of oth

Spatially differentiated byssus-related responses of the mussel foot to iron stimulation inform bioinspired adhesive fabrication.

Marine mussels fabricate durable underwater adhesives through coordinated precursor production, secretion, and metal-mediated assembly, yet the organization of these events within the foot remains poorly understood. In this study, anatomical, transcriptional, histochemical, and PBS-extractable protein analyses were integrated to characterize the foot of Mytilus coruscus under contrasting high- and low-concentration FeCl3 conditions (Fe1 and Fe2). The foot exhibited regional specialization. Plaque glands were concentrated distally, several Mfp transcripts were enriched in distal layers, PTMP tr

Processing interaural cues in sound segregation by young and middle-aged brains.

BACKGROUND: When listening to one speaker while another conversation is occurring simultaneously, we separate the competing sounds by processing physical cues such as common onset time, intensity, frequency harmonicity, and spatial location of the sound sources. Spatial location is determined in large part by differences in arrival of a sound at one ear versus the other ear, otherwise known as interaural time difference (ITD) or interaural phase difference (IPD). There is ample anecdotal evidence that middle-aged adults experience greater difficulty listening to speech in noise, even when thei

Transcranial direct current stimulation modulates spatial memory in cognitively intact adults.

Two forms of spatial processing are involved in object location memory. Coordinate processing uses a fine-grained code to provide exact knowledge for the location and is believed dependent on the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Categorical processing relies on spatial relationships between objects and is believed dependent on the left PPC. We used transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to test these brain-behavior relationships during the encoding and subsequent recall of object location associations. Twelve right-handed, healthy young participants received 20 min of tDCS (2mA)

Spatio-temporal processing in multiple sclerosis.

The processing of spatial and temporal detail was investigated in patients with multiple sclerosis. Normal observers and 13 patients with optic neuritis secondary to multiple sclerosis performed a battery of visual tests that included contrast sensitivity, temporal integration, evoked potentials, and visual masking. The multiple sclerosis patients exhibited losses of pattern processing, and these deficits became more noticeable when the patterns were presented briefly. Moreover, these patients exhibited diverse response patterns for the different visual tests. For some, temporal integration fu

Map-based navigation: Individual differences in perspective taking and path integration.

Spatial navigation is an everyday activity that necessitates multiple cognitive processes, including map reading, perspective taking, and path integration (tracking position and orientation during self-motion). These processes must work in concert to enable individuals to orient themselves and locomote to goal locations, but it remains unclear whether proficiency in one type of spatial processing necessarily implies proficiency in other forms of spatial processing during navigation. Here, we study the processes of transforming a map-indicated viewpoint to locate and move to surrounding invisib

Neuronal correlates of spatial memory updating: c-Fos and GAD67 expression in the object-place recognition task.

The retrieval of spatial memory is behaviorally often assessed in tasks like the classical Object-Place-Recognition (OPR) task that requires an updating of memory. The neural dynamics across interconnected brain regions underlying retrieval processing in such tasks, are not well understood. Here, we examined in rats the neural correlates of retrieval processing in the OPR task by comparing a condition of successful OPR retrieval, in which the displaced object during the retrieval phase (3-hours after encoding) induced a spatial memory updating (OPR condition), with a stationary (STA) control c

Is there a cost in forming statistical summary representations at multiple spatial scales?

Visual processing often entails forming statistical summary representations (SSRs) to encode properties of groups of similar objects. It has been debated whether forming these representations-also referred to as ensemble coding-requires limited capacity resources. We ask for the first time whether forming SSRs at multiple spatial scales incurs a cost in visual processing efficiency. Inspired by Navon's hierarchical stimuli, we spatially arrange several small tilted rectangles to create multiple large tilted rectangles. Participants estimate the mean orientation of either the large rectangles (

Spatially optimized manure management and nutrient recovery can reduce societal costs in a European livestock production hotspot.

Nutrient pollution from livestock incurs high societal costs in hotspot regions. Here we integrate spatial externality internalization and circularity incentives into optimized manure and fertilizer strategies using Flanders as a case study. Internalization cuts societal costs by a quarter by intensifying processing, prioritizing ammonia abatement near sensitive areas and reducing methane emissions. While carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide rise with processing, circular technologies mitigate trade-offs by reducing fertilizer demand.

Effects of complete monocular deprivation in visuo-spatial memory.

Monocular deprivation has been associated with both specific deficits and enhancements in visual perception and processing. In this study, performance on a visuo-spatial memory task was compared in congenitally monocular individuals and sighted control individuals viewing monocularly (i.e., patched) and binocularly. The task required the individuals to view and memorize a series of target locations on two-dimensional matrices. Overall, congenitally monocular individuals performed worse than sighted individuals (with a specific deficit in simultaneously maintaining distinct spatial representati
